What did five of the most critically acclaimed Asian movies that premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival have in common? They all were edited by rising Taiwanese studio Cutting Edge Films.
Formally established only in 2022, the company comprises a small group of film professionals who have worked together for over a decade. They are co-led by French editor Matthieu Laclau (Touch of Sin), known for his long-running collaboration with Chinese auteur Jia Zhangke, and Taiwanese producer Justine O. (The Chinese Mayor, Black Dog), whose work has nabbed a succession of festival prizes in recent years. The company says its recent successes point to the maturity and expanding reach of Taipei’s post-production sector, which has been buoyed by steady government support and a growing reputation for high-quality work at globally competitive prices.
“Taipei’s post-production scene is definitely having a moment,” says Laclau. “For VFX, editing or color grading,...

Game of Thrones star Kit Harington might have faced off against all sorts of enemies in the HBO drama, but in his new movie The Beast Within, he's dealing with a much more personal foe. Releasing in theaters on July 26, Harington plays a family man who lives with his family in a secluded compound deep in the English wilds to protect his secret.
When his 10-year-old daughter Willow starts to question why her family lives such a reclusive life in the forest, she starts digging into their history and uncovers a dark ancestral secret. Harington stars alongside Ashleigh Cummings (Citadel), James Cosmo (Scrooge: A Christmas Carol), and Caoilinn Springall (Stopmotion). Springall was excellent in Stopmotion and appears to have a bright career ahead of her.
The trailer is rather spoiler-y, but if you would like to watch it check it out right here:

"It's okay... don't be scared... I am a monster." Well Go USA has revealed the trailer for an indie horror film titled The Beast Within, made by British filmmaker Alexander J. Farrell. Not to be confused with the cult horror film also titled The Beast Within from 1982. This new one is premiering at the 2024 Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal this summer. It is told through the eyes of a 10-year-old girl, as she begins to question her unusual life in her family's fortified compound in rural England. Willow follows her parents on one of their secret late-night treks to the heart of the ancient forest. But upon witnessing her father undergo a terrible transformation, she too becomes ensnared by the dark ancestral secret they’ve tried so desperately to conceal. This stars Kit Harington, Ashleigh Cummings, Caoilinn Springall (seen in Stopmotion), and James Cosmo. It's obvious he's a werewolf, though...

Upcoming werewolf thriller The Beast Within stars Kit Harington and is set to release next month. Here’s a new trailer to prove it.
Kit Harington’s post Game Of Thrones career never really jumped into gear in the way that it could have, given the popularity that his Jon Snow character garnered across the multiple seasons of the HBO fantasy show. It’s been five years now since Game Of Thrones ended, and since then several of Harington’s higher-profile projects haven’t panned out for one reason or another.
His Jon Snow spin-off show, whilst never officially announced, is now not moving forwards. That reveal came from Harington himself in a recent interview that we covered here. The actor was also set to become part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as The Black Knight but his brief appearance in 2021's Eternals remains his only MCU appearance to date.

Earlier this month, we heard that one of the movies that will be showing at the 28th edition of the Fantasia International Film Festival (which is set to run from from July 18th through August 4th in Montreal) is the werewolf chiller The Beast Within, starring Kit Harington (Jon Snow from HBO’s Game of Thrones). But if you’re not going to be able to attend Fantasia this year, you’re still going to have the chance to see The Beast Within on the big screen this summer… if you’re in the United States, anyway. Well Go USA Entertainment is giving the film a theatrical release nationwide on July 26th, and you can check out the trailer in the embed above.

The 2024 Fantasia Film Festival will open with a world premiere for Bookworm, the Elijah Wood and Nell Fisher starrer from New Zealand filmmaker Ant Timpson.
The indie reteams Wood with Come to Daddy director Timpson and saw the Lord of the Rings actor return to New Zealand for production. In Bookworm, Fisher plays a 12-year-old girl whose life is turned upside down when her long-absent American magician father (Wood) comes to look after her, and together they take an ill-advised camping trip into the rugged New Zealand wilderness to find a mythological beast that leads to increasingly absurd and treacherous adventures.
Among other new titles added to the lineup for Fantasia’s 28th edition are world bows for Alexander J. Farrell’s The Beast Within, starring Kit Harrington; Isaac Ezban’s dystopian coming-of-age tale Parvulos; and Vivieno Caldinelli’s Scared Shitless, starring Steven Ogg and Daniel Doheny.

The second wave of titles have just been announced for this year's edition of the Fantasia International Film Festival and of course there are some doozies in the mix. First off, Ant Timpson's Bookworm, starring Elijah Wood and Nell Fisher will have its world premiere when it opens the fesitval this year. It looks absolutely delightful and fun. Japanese anime Mononoke The Movie: The Phantom in the Rain, werewolf movie The Beast Within, starring Kit Harington, the coming-of-age horror flick Parvulos from our friend in Mexico, Isaac Ezban, Canadian gore horror Scare Shitless! directed by Vivieno Caldinelli featuring practical effects by Steven Kostanski, Protuguese grass-roots horror flick The Old Man and the Demon Sword, and underground micro-budget story about a relationship, Me And My...

To mark Alien Day, we head back to the late 1970s to see how Hr Giger designed the Space Jockey – and its strange fate after the film’s premiere…
In the early hours of Tuesday, the 29th May 1979, someone killed the Space Jockey. Burned it alive, perhaps with a blowtorch even something more mundane like a match or a cigarette. The crime occurred four days after the premiere of Alien at Hollywood’s Grauman’s Egyptian Theater, and was reported on by at least one outlet at the time: sci-fi magazine, Starlog.
“The Los Angeles opening of Alien was marked by misfortune when a miniature version of the film’s ‘starpilot’ was destroyed with fire,” the news story ran, garbling the Space Jockey’s name somewhat. “It was set ablaze by vandals just hours after being placed on display in the forecourt of Hollywood’s Egyptian Theatre. There’s a moment late on in the first night of Madonna‘s Celebration Tour when the Queen of Pop, acoustic guitar in hand, leads The O2 Arena in a solo rendition of Gloria Gaynor’s seminal disco hit ‘I Will Survive.’
It would be a fitting choice for any 65-year-old pop star who can still play a staggering six nights at an arena that fits 20,000 people, but for Madonna, the song seems even more appropriate. This tour, a career-spanning look back at 40 years at the top, was originally set...

The 65-year-old Queen of Pop took the stage on Saturday night (October 14) at The O2 Arena in London, England for the first date of her long-awaited tour. The start date is several months later than expected after Madonna was hospitalized earlier this year for a serious bacterial infection.
With a discography that spans 40 years, there were so many songs that fans were hoping to hear from the superstar as she travels the country.
Now that opening night has come and gone, we can reveal that she delivered an evening full of beloved hits and two surprise covers!

Drawing comparisons to Night of the Living Dead and The Thing, Screambox Original Shifted streams on April 18. The ambitious indie horror tale finds a group of neighbors trapped by murderous creatures with a serial killer hidden among them.
Unleash the beast by watching an exclusive sneak-peek clip below…
Shifted is written and directed by Adrian Konstant, based on a story by Konstant and producer Jason T. Green. Michael Wurtz, Derek Lackenbauer, Victoria Dunsmore, Brian Otto, Alyssa Anne Blasak, Zach Parsons, Jenna Gagliardi, Alyssa Schermel, and Sean Rey star.
As murderous creatures ravage the outside, a group of neighbors take refuge in an isolated house. Their relief is short-lived as a sinister secret hides within those walls, and they become the prey of a serial killer hidden among them. While the other streaming services set up recurring franchises, Hulu has opted to get a bit more experimental with its original offerings in August 2021.
Hulu’s list of new releases this month is highlighted by three original series concepts with promise. Reservation Dogs premieres on August 9. Co-created by Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok), this story will follow four indigenous teenagers in Oklahoma as they stave off boredom and adulthood. Next up is Nine Perfect Strangers on August 18. This miniseries, based on a book of the same name, is produced by David E. Kelley and features staggering cast of Nicole Kidman, Melissa McCarthy, Luke Evans, Samara Weaving, and more.
Only Murders in the Building is likely the biggest thing to look forward to in August though. Premiering on August 31, this comedy stars Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez as three true crime-obsessed friends who stumble into a true crime of their own.

It’s been a while since I penned a Which is Better article on here, so, as seen as Summer is making me wish Autumn was here, and I’m counting down the days for the Halloween season, I figured I’d go back to two of my favourite vampire movies ever, and pit them against each other in this almost-pointless-because-it’s-subjective-anyway battle of evil versus evil, vamp versus vamp. Fright Night versus The Lost Boys.
*Cue People are Strange by The Doors*
Ok, so I grew up with The Lost Boys on my television set and the record of the soundtrack echoing from the stereo system. I have always had a lot of fondness for the 80s glam-vamp teen-comedy that featured some of the big names from the era, with Keifer Sutherland in the role of head-but-not-quite-head vampire, David, Jason Patrick and Corey Haim as brothers Micheal and Sam,...

Quibi, the Jeffrey Katzenberg-backed 2020-launching streaming platform designed for short-form stories, has announced a most intriguing offering amongst its deep backlog, a horror anthology series, titled 50 States of Fright, which has corralled quite the cast and crew, notably with genre legend Sam Raimi–the movie maestro of the Evil Dead cinematic and television franchise and crucial comic book cinema of the Spider-Man Trilogy–tapped to develop and even direct an entry.
Rachel Brosnahan, Travis Fimmel, Christina Ricci, Asa Butterfield, Jacob Batalon, Ming-Na Wen, Taissa Farmiga, John Marshall Jones and Ron Livingston are just some of the names lined up to fill 50 States of Fright’s anthology episodes. With the average runtime of approximately 10 minutes, each episode culls content from American urban legends and folklore.
50 States of Fright will manifest via Gunpowder & Sky’s horror brand, Alter, which will produce with Diga Studios and Pod 3.

Ava's plan was dangerous from the start. Not only were they planning to essentially kidnap Mason, but they were going to drug him and mix it with alcohol.

The 71st Cannes Film Festival may have gotten off to a bumpy start, underwhelming audiences with Iranian director Asghar Farhadi’s Spanish-language “Everybody Knows” and taking several days to serve up anything that felt universally praised (eventual Palme d’Or winner Hirokazu Kore-eda’s “Shoplifters”), but by the end, even those who had arrived skeptical seemed to agree that the overall quality of this auteur-thin, American-light edition was higher than usual. Looking back on 12 days of discovery, here are a dozen films that most impressed Variety chief critics Owen Gleiberman and Peter Debruge.
BlacKkKlansman
Spike Lee has made three extraordinary films that toss incendiary racial firecrackers: the classic “Do the Right Thing” (1989), the majestic “Malcolm X” (1992), and the wild (and insanely underrated) black-face satire “Bamboozled” (2000). Here, for the first time since then, he creates a scalding zeitgeist spectacle of American bigotry laid bare. Set in Colorado Springs in the early ’70s,...

What makes a good Satanic Panic flick? Is it the urbane, dark humor of Rosemary’s Baby (’68), perhaps the outsized biblical insanity of The Omen (’76), or the insidious paranoia that infuses Race with the Devil (’75)? The answer for me is all of the above, and what a treat it is to come across another that brings something a little different - The Brotherhood of Satan (’71) offers a sense of quiet displacement before unleashing a torrent of blustery brimstone and hellfire.
Released by Columbia Pictures in early August, The Brotherhood of Satan even received some decent notices; Roger Greenspun of The New York Times proclaimed that the film “displays bold, direct, relatively uncomplicated acceptance of its supernature”, which is definitely one of its strengths – the evil is ingrained in the small town structure and those within are resigned to its nature. Hey, it was the ‘70s! Were you really expecting upbeat?...

In the past few months, one of my favorite things to do has become listening to the podcast Lore, created and produced by Aaron Mahnke. I’ve always been fascinated in the supernatural and I’ve always enjoyed learning about legends and folklore from around the world.
The Lore podcast is 100% focused on these things and I have thoroughly enjoyed listening to each and every episode that has been released. They just suck me right in! Some of them are creepy as hell and I always learning something new that I hadn’t known before. Even stories that I’m already familiar with, the Podcast has managed to include several bits of info that pleasantly surprised me.
This past weekend, an anthology series was released on Amazon based on the podcast that takes six of the most popular podcast episodes and turned each of them into an episode. The series...

"Be gone from this house!"
Amazon Studios has released the first full trailer for their new horror series Lore. The show is based on a popular podcast and it combines "documentary footage, narration, historical mixed media and cinematic scenes to explore the real-life tales behind pop culture’s most legendary horror myths, such as vampires, changelings, werewolves, séances and possessed dolls."
Each of the six episodes of the series will be based on fan-favorite episodes from the podcast. Here are the details of each the episodes:

Jerry Goldsmith was already a veteran film composer with numerous iconic scores under his belt by the time he was enlisted to work on Ridley Scott’s Alien (1979). He’d worked in radio and television through the 1950s, contributing music to classic shows such as The Twilight Zone (1959) and Perry Mason (1959) before making the move to film, writing scores for films as diverse in subject matter (and sound) as Stagecoach (1966) and Planet of the Apes (1968) in the 1960s and Chinatown (1974) and The Omen (1976) in the 1970s. Goldsmith’s rich orchestral scores for such films, which were informed and influenced by early 20th century modernist composers, are both experimental and economical in their use and development of thematic material. He explained, “What I really try to do is to take one simple motif of the material for the picture, and a broad theme, and construct it so they always can work...

By 1997, the creature feature was all but dead in the horror world. Films like From Beyond, The Fly, The Beast Within, and dozens of others were very popular in the '80s and early '90s, but by the time Wes Craven upended the genre with Scream, people had already started getting cynical about horror and the lens had largely turned inward. However, the idea of the gruesome monster laying waste to guilty and innocent alike wasn't completely dead, and in '97 the Djinn was born. Wishmaster was written by Peter Atkins, best known for his work on the Hellraiser series, and directed by FX wizard Robert Kurtzman, then a part of the legendary Knb Efx Group with Greg Nicotero and Howard Berger. Kurtzman had years...

Full disclosure: The Amityville Horror films do not make up my favorite franchise. And it has nothing to do with the central “haunted house” premise, but rather the execution of the series thus far, from the serviceable ground zero template, The Amityville Horror (1979) through the (as yet unseen) upcoming Amityville: The Awakening, with some stops in between at DTVville (not to mention the Ryan Reynolds remake; but I said not to mention, so not mention I shall). The name is so shopworn now that “Amityville” has become synonymous with “poopy”.
But, but, But…let’s rewind to a time when a follow up to the kind-of goofy James Brolin (and his glorious perm) starrer was actually anticipated. That film was a smash success at the box office, and the powers that be wanted to revisit the village of Amityville to see what other demons they could find in the basement.

The Bottom Shelf returns, with a video nasty, The Howling 2, and a tribute to the late Herschell Gordon Lewis...
To most, September 26th is the date when, in 1680, the Dutch city Gorinchem suffered a citizen’s revolt due to an imposed tax on cereal. From now on, though, that will change, as any right-thinking person will remember that date in 2016 as the day The Godfather Of Gore, the great Herschell Gordon Lewis, died.
The brain behind a range of vintage cult classics, spanning the gamut of exploitation cinema, from splatter movies to comedy erotica and supernatural witchcraft thriller (niche!), Lewis’ influential sixties and seventies productions paved the way for the video nasties of the eighties and the gory likes of David Cronenberg and Peter Jackson and stand up today as camp, gawdy historical documents of a bygone era. As such, to coincide with an impeccably timed release...

Back in the early 90s, one of the biggest trends in computer gaming was the use of FMVs, or full-motion video, to “enhance” games with real actors and sequences. The trend had moderate success, delivering some of the best and the worst adventures of the era. While the pinnacle of the Fmv experiment was, arguably, Sierra’s masterpiece The Beast Within: A Gabriel Knight Mystery, one genre entry that has never been forgotten by its fans is The 7th Guest. A first-person puzzle game set in a haunted house, The 7th Guest became incredibly popular with audiences at the time for its clever blend

1982. What a year. From The Beast Within to Creepshow to Friday the 13th Part III to Q, it displayed a smorgasbord of fantastical delights for terror consumers. Standing heads (two, to be exact) and shoulders apart from the crowd was Frank Henenlotter’s grimeball debut, Basket Case, a lovely tale of a boy and his twin brother. Who happens to be a monstrous blob. And lives in a basket.
Shot on 16mm for a reported $35,000 Us, Basket Case premiered in Henenlotter’s beloved Times Square, and became a big hit on the grindhouse circuit. This shouldn’t be surprising, as the film is a big, fat, wet kiss to the pre-cleanup New York of the ’80s (think diseases, not Disney). Critics at the time acknowledged the uniqueness of it, but most could not overlook the technical deficiencies or the broad range of performances on display. No matter. Horror fans that...

The 1980’s were inarguably a “golden era” for the subgenre of monster horror flicks. This decade saw a variety of brave experiments on the silver screen involving ghoulies and ghosts, as well as some amazing plotlines. Here are five films from the era that succeeded at turning the truly bizarre into some bloody good entertainment.
5. Deadly Spawn
Deadly Spawn is a 1983 space-monster film shot on a budget of merely $25,000. In light of that low low number, the distinguishing horror fan is willing to look past instances in which a fishing line for controlling the monsters is visible. The premise is simple: a meteor carrying a space-slug crashes to Earth. The slug immediately eats two humans before finding a dark basement where it can multiply. The movie takes off when a trio of geeky horror fans discover the slug living in their basement, and come up with a plan to stop...

In the wake of the massive hit that was Jaws (1975), studios were foaming at the mouth to replicate its success. Of course, their idea was to take everything that they thought made Jaws a winner and put it in a different setting. Here’s a few that were cranked out by the dream machine: Jaws on Land (Grizzly), Micro-Jaws (Piranha), Jaws, Back to the Water (Orca), Jaws, Back to the Water Again, with Feeling (Jaws II) , and our flick du jour, the little engine that could, Jaws on Wheels – The Car (1977) .
In actuality, Steven Spielberg made Jaws on Wheels before he made Jaws, with the relentless cat and mousecapades of Duel (1971). However, this was 1977 and it was time for an upgrade. Released by Universal in May, The Car was (naturally) laughed off the screen by the critics, and why wouldn’t it be? A demonic vehicle terrorizing a...

July 14th may not have a lot of genre-related titles arriving on DVD and Blu-ray, but the films making their home entertainment debuts this week are a rather stellar bunch nonetheless. For anyone who may have missed two of the best indie films this year in theaters—Ex Machina and It Follows—you’ll have a chance to catch up with both this coming Tuesday.
Scream Factory is also keeping busy this week with their high-def release of Philippe Mora’s cult classic, Howling II: Your Sister is a Werewolf, and they also have two double feature Blu-rays coming out as well. Severin Films has put together an extensive special edition release of the recent documentary Lost Soul, which follows the troubled production of Richard Stanley’s Island of Doctor Moreau and looks pretty incredible and for all you X-Men fans out there, the Rogue Cut version of Days...
