One of Tim Burton's first professional gigs after his stint at the California Institute of Arts was working as an animator, storyboard artist, and graphic designer at Disney. Burton was born and raised in Burbank, California, which is where Disney's offices are located, so he more or less grew up in the company's shadow. He worked at the Mouse House for a few years in the early '80s, working on films like "The Fox and the Hound," "Tron," and "The Black Cauldron." It should be noted that this was a notoriously bad time for Disney, and the financial failure of the ultra-ambitious and very expensive "Cauldron" (it cost $44 million) led to an open conversation about Disney shutting down its animation department.
Of course, while Disney was floundering financially, they were freer to experiment artistically. I maintain that Disney's most interesting movies came at a time when their kiddie-flick successes didn't define them.

This four-part, so-far-untitled documentary series about the rise and rise of Hollywood’s least likely marquee-name director starts out with a tribute from Christopher Walken that will be very hard for the next three instalments to match. In that inimitable… sta-cc-a-to… Way… of his, the Sleepy Hollow star recalls his former dance teacher saying to him: “Chris, show me something I never saw before. And that’s what Tim does. Every time.”
That, by any metric, is a high bar, and, for the first hour of this docuseries at least, the hyperbole is justified: Whether Tim Burton’s 39-year career in feature films — one imagines the imminent release of Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice must have scuppered the nice, round 40 — will keep viewers glued to the next three is another matter. But while Tara Wood’s documentary is clearly in the director’s corner, it does, convincingly, chart the most unlikely of outsiders...

Johnny Depp’s breakout performance in Edward Scissorhands will remain one of Tim Burton’s all-time favorites. Several suggestions came Burton’s way for the lead role in the film at the time, but Depp had always been his choice for the role. However, the popular demand for the role did concern the Pirates of the Caribbean actor and his imposter syndrome kicked in.

Depp was so wrong about the inner thoughts that almost pulled him away from the role. He snatched the role from the likes of Tom Cruise and Tom Hanks and delivered one of the most eccentrically amazing performances.

Social media can be the most toxic and polarizing place out there, but one bright spot is when you get a social media manager with a sense of humor. Universal Orlando Resort social media manager has a sense of humor and it seems that the Beetlejuice account also has one.
Yesterday, the Beetlejuice account posted that Beetlejuice would not be appearing in “Deadpool & Wolverine.”

The post is in response to the rumors about Taylor Swift being Lady Deadpool in the film. Many people were convinced that Swift was the character, even though we only see a character’s legs in the trailer. Swift’s people say that it isn’t true, and she is not in the film.
But it’s funny.
The comments didn’t disappoint either.

The Tim Burton and Johnny Depp collaborations are certainly prolific. While Depp was a teen star on the Fox series 21 Jump Street, he had a weird creative force inside of him that a high school cop series didn’t fulfill. Then came a new movie called Edward Scissorhands that paired Depp with his long-time director friend. Deadline reports that Depp is being featured in a new docu-series that’s a retrospective on the career of Tim Burton, and the actor reveals who he beat out for the part of Edward.
According to People, Depp said the competition was stiff for the titular character and names like Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise and even the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, were being considered for the role. Depp explained that Cruise “was not far away from actually playing Edward Scissorhands — true story.” Depp admitted to thinking, “He’s never going to cast...

Despite his imposter syndrome, Johnny Depp beat out some of the biggest names in film (and music) for his breakout role.
The Academy Award nominee revealed he beat out the likes of Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise and even Michael Jackson for his eponymous role in Tim Burton’s 1990 gothic fantasy Edward Scissorhands.
He told director Tara Wood that Cruise “was not far away from actually playing Edward Scissorhands — true story” as he reflected on the film for an untitled docuseries about Burton, according to People.
Depp ultimately landed the role of the loving outcast, who was created by a scientist (Vincent Price) with scissors in place of his hands. When his creator dies, a local woman (Dianne Wiest) takes Edward into her suburban home, where he falls in love with her daughter (Winona Ryder) and faces ostracism from the townspeople.

The last film Tim Burton directed, 2019's live-action "Dumbo" remake, became something of an accidental metaphor for his career. For its first half, the movie sticks fairly close to Disney's original 1941 animated feature, as the titular elephant with unusually large ears is abused and treated with disdain by the customers at the traveling circus where he resides. When Dumbo's newfound ability to fly makes him the show's star attraction (the point at which the animated film ends), he and his fellow performers are recruited by a greedy and unscrupulous businessman (Michael Keaton) who exploits them at his gaudy amusement park. It's up to Dumbo and his pals to escape the park in search of greener pastures.
It's not a one-to-one analogy, but you can see why, upon reflection, Burton said Disney was a "horrible big circus" and he was its Dumbo. After decades of collaborating, the once visionary filmmaker...

Tim Burton’s rendition of Batman remains perhaps one of the most eccentric yet authentic versions of the Caped Crusader. To the gothic filmmaker, the orphaned superhero didn’t symbolize the heroic savior that comes to Gotham’s rescue, as is the quintessential take of the character.

Perhaps it is this painfully realistic and gritty take on the character that sets Burton’s creation apart from the sundry other Batman films, making it next to impossible to recreate his historic vision.

It’s the age-old argument: Alien or Aliens? The haunted-house horror movie, or the action-packed war film? The lean, dread-filled original, or the bigger, beefier sequel? Both Ridley Scott’s original Xenomorph outing and James Cameron’s exemplary sequel stand tall among the greatest sci-fi films of all time – each with a strong and valid claim for being the best of the bunch. But when deciding the direction in which to take his sequel, Alien: Romulus, filmmaker Fede Alvarez hit upon the ideal solution: why not a hybrid of the two?

Within minutes of the actors strike ending on Nov. 9, Ryan Reynolds was making plans to get back to London and the set of Deadpool & Wolverine, one of the many movies shut down in mid-July when the walkout commenced. He and director Shawn Levy were determined to make their July 26 release date, which they were able to accomplish. For other tentpoles, it was too late, and they would ultimately decamp to 2025.
One studio head says the impact of the writers’ walkout, which lasted five months until a settlement was reached on Sept. 27, also played a major role. “Think of it like this — if the actors’ strike shut down the oil refinery, then the writers’ strike shut down the oil fields.”

“We needed every single step of the way to get us to Broadway. And that entire process took almost 13 years,” reveals David Korins of the long journey to bring “Here Lies Love” to Broadway. From a workshop in Massachusetts, to productions in Seattle, London, and New York, the scenic designer refined his concept for the immersive disco musical that would see audiences dancing inside of, and moving through, his nightclub set. “It wasn’t a concept that was layered on top of the show,” explains Korins, “It was literally baked into the idea of the show.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.

Warner Bros. released the full trailer for Tim Burton's Beetlejuice sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (oops!), last week, giving us a first glimpse of several new characters, including Willem Dafoe's brilliantly-named Wolf Jackson.
Now, Empire has shared a new image from the movie, providing us with a better look at the "afterlife cop," who is missing a portion of his skull.
When he was alive, Jackson was an actor who was known for playing a police officer by the just as fantastically-named Frank Hardballer, and took on a similar role after his death as head of the Afterlife Crimes Unit.
“The most important thing for me was to find the tone. It had to be rooted but it also had to be free enough that you could play with it. I take my cue off of [Michael Keaton],” says Dafoe. “You take your cue off of the world.”

Controversial Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colorado) found herself under fire for a groping incident at a performance of Beetlejuice again at a GOP primary debate in her home state on Friday. In September 2023, Boebert made headlines after the lawmaker behaved inappropriately at a performance of the musical in Denver.
Boebert was caught vaping, singing and recording on her cellphone during the performance. Her disruptive behavior caused the representative to be escorted out of the venue. Boebert was also seen groping her date inappropriately while seated. Employees had given Boebert several warnings to stop her behavior before the situation escalated.
Boebert briefly addressed the situation in a post on social media platform X, writing, “It’s true, I did thoroughly enjoy the Amazing Beetlejuice at the Buell Threate, and I plead guilty to laughing and singing too loud!”
The congresswoman eventually confessed to lying about the incident and apologized.

Micheal Keaton recently told Empire magazine that watching his iconic character Beetlejuice go mainstream over the years through various merchandising has been “fucking weird.” In order to reprise the role in Tim Burton’s upcoming sequel, Keaton had to actively block out what the character’s popularity has turned him into over the years and return to the reasons why he accepted the role in the first place.
“There’s been so much merchandising of it, I had to drop back to where it started,” Keaton explained. “I had to go, ‘What was my unusual imagination even thinking about when I was developing it in the first place?’ As opposed to seeing a coffee mug or a golf club cover.”
“That was fucking weird,” Keaton added about the character’s popularity. “To be honest with you – I’m being very frank – it was off-putting, to look and go, ‘I don...

Michael Keaton has done a wide range of roles over a glittering career, including donning the iconic Batman cape in Tim Burton’s pioneering film on the DC superhero. But it was his other collaboration with Burton in 1988’s Beetlejuice that put him on the map as a star to be reckoned with.

Now, more than 3 decades after the blockbuster hit screens, Keaton is back playing the charismatic titular ghoul who wreaks havoc in Burton’s Beetlejuice 2 which will release in September 2024. The film also stars Jenna Ortega along with Winona Ryder reprising her role from the original. Ortega who saw the Birdman actor in close quarters, was stunned by his ability to transform magically into his character.

Michael Keaton has played many iconic characters over the years. While Batman and the Vulture have certainly gotten him a lot of attention, there is no denying that his work in Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice was one of the most iconic points in his career. The influence that the character had cannot be put into words, as he was immortalized in the hall of Burton’s most iconic characters.

However, sometimes the attention that one role gets can be counterproductive. During a recent interview, Keaton talked about the attention his portrayal of the character got. Interestingly enough, he revealed how it made it difficult for him to find his voice the second time around.

Michael Keaton Transformed Back Into Beetlejuice “Like He Was Possessed By A Demon,” Says Tim Burton
After 30-plus years away from the character, Michael Keaton had some doubts about finding Beetlejuice again for Tim Burton’s forthcoming sequel, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice.
“There’s been so much merchandising of it, I had to drop back to where it started,” Keaton told Empire. “I had to go, ‘What was my unusual imagination even thinking about when I was developing it in the first place?’ As opposed to seeing a coffee mug or a golf-club cover [adorned with Betelgeuse’s face].”
The character is no longer just some weird product of his imagination; It is now iconic in the Tim Burton canon — if not the canon of cinema itself.
“The ubiquity of Beetlejuice as a character in the culture created its own challenges. “”That was fucking weird,” Keaton admitted to Empire. “To be honest with you – I’m being very frank – it was off-putting, to look and go, ‘I don’t want to look like all these little things,...

Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice is finally getting a sequel after 36 years of waiting, as Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (informally known as Beetlejuice 2) is going to be released later this year in theaters around the world. Michael Keaton is back in the titular role after more than three decades, which is interesting, seeing how he has recently returned to the role of Batman as well. Beetlejuice is one of the movies that made Keaton’s career, and seeing the actor back in the role will certainly create a wave of nostalgia for fans, especially since he is reuniting with Tim Burton once again.
But the experience of returning to the role was somewhat surreal for Keaton himself, who said that he did not like the fact that Beetlejuice became a part of the mainstream and that the character was effectively corrupted and ruined by the merchandising it was exposed to.

Just as Lydia Deetz is strange and unusual, Winona Ryder found her experience reprising the character for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice to be just that. After all, not only has it been more than 35 years since the original Beetlejuice came out but Ryder has actually never starred in a sequel before.
Speaking with Empire, Winona Ryder had a hard time describing just what it was like reprising Lydia Deetz for the Beetlejuice sequel. “I struggle to find the words. It’s just one of the most special experiences that I’ve ever had. The fact that we’re coming back to it, it’s…It’s beyond…I don’t know if I’ve ever felt this way.” Ryder also noted that “this is a first for me. I’ve never revisited a character, ever.”

The prevailing wisdom on Tim Burton is that he's somewhat lost his way as his career has gone on. Whereas his early filmography is marked by some of the most influential films of the last few decades, his later output has relied a little too heavily on a CGI version of his famously hand-crafted aesthetic and neglected the fundamental elements that make a good story. However, with the news that his upcoming "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" once again embraces practical effects, we might be about to witness a Burton renaissance.
Still, there's no getting around the fact that in most rankings of Tim Burton films, his older work is usually at the top. In terms of critical response, you'll typically find "Ed Wood," his 1994 biopic of the cult filmmaker, in the top spot, followed by more universally beloved classics such as "Edward Scissorhands" or the original "Beetlejuice." I, having become transfixed by...

Back in 1988, Beetlejuice became Winona Ryder’s breakout movie. This was before Heathers, before Edward Scissorhands, before Bram Stoker’s Dracula and Little Women, before she became a generational icon. And it’s no wonder she stood out in Tim Burton’s supernatural comedy – her Lydia Deetz was the sullen, sardonic teenage goth girl at its heart, who relates more to the ghosts in the attic than her own living relatives. Now, 35 years later, Lydia is back and all grown up in Tim Burton’s long-awaited sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. And, as Ryder tells Empire in our world-exclusive new issue, stepping back into her goth boots has been a real trip.
“I struggle to find the words,” she says of the sequel. “It’s just one of the most special experiences that I’ve ever had. The fact that we’re coming back to it, it’s… It’s beyond.” The...

'I'd had enough': Tim Burton was disillusioned with the film industry before Beetlejuice Beetlejuice
Tim Burton had "lost interest" in movies before making 'Beetlejuice Beetlejuice'.The 65-year-old director has returned to helm the long-awaited sequel to the 1988 horror comedy 'Beetlejuice' but confessed that he felt disillusioned with the industry prior to the project. In an interview with Empire magazine, Tim said: "I actually had sort of lost interest in the movie industry. I felt like I'd kind of had enough with studios. I'd had enough of all this kind of stuff."Burton explained that a significant appeal of the sequel was the focus on Winona Ryder's character Lydia Deetz rather than Michael Keaton's titular ghost. The 'Edward Scissorhands' filmmaker said: "From that first (film), I really identified with Lydia. It was a character that I understood, that I felt very strongly about."The new film becomes very personal to me, through the Lydia character. What happened to Lydia? You know,...

Beetlejuice is back! Batman director Tim Burton and beloved actor Michael Keaton are reuniting for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the long-awaited sequel to Burton's award-winning Beetlejuice.
Empire Magazine has shared two covers for the sequel, with the first putting the spotlight on the title character alongside stars Winona Ryder, Jenna Ortega, and Catherine O'Hara. The second focuses solely on Beetlejuice and was illustrated by artist Chris Christodoulou.
After an unexpected family tragedy, the movie sees three generations of the Deetz family return home to Winter River. Still haunted by Beetlejuice, Lydia's life is turned upside down when her rebellious teenage daughter, Astrid, discovers the mysterious model of the town in the attic and the portal to the Afterlife is accidentally opened.
With trouble brewing in both realms, it's only a matter of time until someone says Beetlejuice's name three times and the mischievous demon returns to unleash his very own brand of mayhem.

Michael Keaton just wanted to get back to the basics of playing ghoul Betelgeuse.
Keaton told Empire that returning for sequel “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” in the title role meant he had to somewhat overlook the zeitgeist iconography from the 1988 original Tim Burton film.

Keaton called witnessing the lore of Betelgeuse in the merchandising world a “fucking weird” experience.

It’s been five years since Tim Burton’s last movie hit cinemas – his live-action take on Disney’s Dumbo. In the intervening years, the director had moved away from feature films, instead entering the streaming game with his massive Netflix hit series Wednesday, imagining the Addams Family’s daughter solving spooky mysteries at a supernatural high school. But now, Burton is officially back on the big screen with Beetlejuice Beetlejuice – a long-awaited sequel to his 1988 classic comedy, reuniting the director with Michael Keaton’s garrulous ghoul and Winona Ryder’s outsider Lydia Deetz. While sequels can be eyed with skepticism from audiences, make no mistake: this is deeply personal territory for cinema’s greatest goth auteur.

In every sense, Beetlejuice is a force of nature. The titular ghoul in Tim Burton’s beloved spooky comedy is a total hellraiser, unleashing supernatural shenanigans on the living and the recently deceased: possession, transmogrification, and absurdist pranks are the name of his game. And in the hands of Michael Keaton, the character became an instant cinematic icon – not only for that distinctive black-and-white get-up and green shock of hair, but the freewheeling ferocity of Keaton’s physical performance. Whenever Beetlejuice is summoned, you never quite know what he’ll do next. Now, over thirty years later, he’s about to conjure up even more chaos.
Yes, Beetlejuice is back in long-awaited sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice – with Burton once again directing, and Keaton ready to rip it up all over again. And in Empire’s world-exclusive cover feature, Keaton spoke about the “surreal” experience of finding himself back in the stripes.

Warner Bros. unveiled the first full trailer for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice this past Thursday, and it gave us a much better idea of what to expect from Tim Burton's long-awaited sequel.
The teaser begins with Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder) returning to Winter River with her mother Delia (Catherine O'Hara) and daughter Astrid (Jenna Ortega) for her father's funeral (confirming reports that Jeffrey Jones' Charles Deetz has been killed off), when memories of her encounter with lecherous demon Betelgeuse (Michael Keaton) resurface.
Lydia explains what happened all those years ago to Astrid, who proceeds to say the Ghost with the Most's name three times, summoning him back to the land of the living.
The trailer features our first look at Betelgeuse's ex-wife Delores (Monica Bellucci), and one quick shot reveals that she is missing a finger. This is almost certainly a call-back to an infamous scene from the original movie, which...
