In 1989, the movie Best of the Best had a somewhat abbreviated run in theaters. Only grossing a mere $1.7 million, the movie was a major hit on home video and cable. That’s why, three years later, a sequel, Best of the Best 2, hit theaters… for a while. While the first film has maintained a certain cult status, the sequel, and the two more that followed, have been largely forgotten – until now on this edition of The Best Movie You Never Saw.
Best of the Best 2 came from the same creative team behind the original, including director Robert Radler and producer/ star Phillip Rhee. Intriguingly, it was co-written by a TV actor of the time named John Allen Nelson, who starred on Baywatch for a few seasons, played Paul The Wine Guy on Friends, and has shown up as a guest actor on most of the biggest shows on TV.

So, we come to the end of this particular series. We’ve covered a number of aspects of the creative input into film-making, including actors, actresses, writers composers, and directors (in two parts). We’ve stopped short of costume, make-up, special effects, art design and others, however our final stop is Cinematography. The Dop exerts plenty of influence over the look of the film. Yes, lighting, production design and the director’s vision are key too, but the consistency and persistence with which certain directors stick with and return to a trusted Dop shows just how much they contribute.
Darius Khondji – Seven
Seven has a unique visual aesthetic. Plenty of films have gone for the “always raining, always dark” approach, but contrast Seven with something like AvP: Requiem for a shining example of how hard it is to pull off effectively. And contrast is the word. Seven...

With Actors, Directors, Actresses and Screenwriters under our collective belt and Cinematographers still to come, we presently turn our eye towards Composers, whose music lends so much to the films they work on.
As with the other lists, credit is given for not merely one or two sterling scores, but rather a consistently excellent body of work with specific stand-out films. To be blunt, this is a trickier prospect than it at first appears. Just because a film is terrific or well-loved doesn’t necessarily mean that the score is itself a standout. We begin with perhaps the most obvious and celebrated film composer of them all…..

His name is Daehan Choi. He’s 18 years old and he’s from South Korea. This video was published in January of this year and has 193,000 views. I personally think it deserves to hit the 1 million mark so as of this posting I fully expect it to hit 193,001. As far as it hitting a million, that’s up to you guys. But come on. First of all, the name Daehan is incredible because is the same name as the bad guy in the 80s classic karate movie Best of the Best. Second of all, look at this kid.

Actors, Writers, Directors, they all have their part to play and all have their echelons of excellence. For every Scorsese working at the top of their game, there’s a journeyman like Peter Berg and then a hack like McG (sorry to any McG fans out there). It’s all (obviously) much the same with the greatest actresses too – some consistently hit high notes, others work faithfully but perhaps unexceptionally and others struggle to ever escape derivative and low-brow work. Here are a few who fall squarely in the first group.
Susan Sarandon – Dead Man Walking
Susan Sarandon is often underappreciated and underrated for her versatility. Consider the contrast between her campaigning, gracious nun in Dead Man Walking, her feisty southerner in Thelma & Louise, her boo-hiss Queen in Enchanted, the comparative gentleness (but definitely not blandness) of her roles in Robot & Frank and Elizabethtown and the oomph...

You can catch up with the greatest writers, and the greatest actors here.
Here’s Part Two.
Howard Hawks – The Big Sleep
Hawks, like his peer Billy Wilder, proved a genre-hopping master. Like Wilder, he had his crime/noir masterpieces (Scarface, The Big Sleep) and his comedies (Bringing Up Baby, His Girl Friday). Hawks also did a strong line in westerns, with Red River and Rio Bravo the best known and best regarded of this latter-career focus of his. The Directors, The Auteurs, the Commanders of the Ship, Masters of All They Survey. Too much credit is undoubtedly given to them (film is as collaborative an artistic medium as any), but at the same time they still exert incomparable influence over the end product. We’ve recently looked at writers, with whom all films originate, then to the actors, and now we turn to the greatest directors and all they do to hold the infernal enterprise together.
We can only speculate on what might have been, had Charles Laughton followed up on the unbelievable promise of his debut Night of the Hunter. But he never directed again and so is regrettably out of the running. But hopefully there remains a little something for everyone below and of course the intention is to stimulate debate so by all means add a comment for any glaring omissions.

Having scoured the ranks of actors to draw up a shortlist of the best of them and then a selection of their best work, we now move on to consider the best work by the greatest writers. This can be a harder thing to judge, given that there will often be a team of writers, or polishing work is done on a script that is otherwise someone else’s work. Quentin Tarantino did some polishing on Crimson Tide, but by contrast his script for Natural Born Killers is much less distinctively his, bearing as it does a lot of Oliver Stone’s fingerprints. What we will (try to) focus on are those writers who rather than being hacks for hire have instead crafted something all their own and seen it transition relatively unmolested to the screen.

The prospective candidates for admission to MiB were hand-picked because they were the best of the best of the best. That’s a lot of superlatives. Eric Roberts and Chris Penn were two of the more unlikely members of a Tae Kwon Do team that took on Korea in The Best of the Best and across pretty much every athletic and artistic theatre of endeavour you can think of, debate rages as to who is the best of the best. Today we look at the greatest movie actors.
This new series of articles is not intended to lay such arguments to rest. Instead it will hopefully prompt some discussion and (polite) debate as we consider, within certain film-making disciplines, who might be considered to be the best and what is their best work. What jumps to mind when you hear the phrase "Quentin Tarantino movie"? Hyperviolence? A bunch of different B-movies pastiched into something new? A lot of dialogue with a lot of bad language? That one "F" word in particular? Any of those could be right, but there's another thing many of Tarantino's movies have in common: a big, meaty role for an actor who's maybe in need of a career boost. In the case of the Tarantino movie currently in theaters, The Hateful Eight, the role is that of Daisy Domergue, a wily, foul-mouthed criminal played by Jennifer Jason Leigh. Now Leigh hasn't been without work.

Fan conventions are cropping up everywhere these days. From the small to the large, from Walker Stalker to San Diego Comic-Con, there’s no shortage of conventions specially tailored for the ultimate fan. What makes a true fan experience, though, is a convention that has both the conventional star elements of a big event and the natural interaction between star and fan. The first Heroes and Villains FanFest was not only the ultimate fan experience, but it produced a gold mine of information on upcoming episodes of Arrow, The Flash, and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. The two-day convention had everything! It had the typical autograph and photo booths, vendors galore, and the most exciting element of all, the panels. Of course, cosplay was well done, with many fans representing their favorite alter egos, from the Green Arrow, to the Evil Queen from Once Upon a Time, to a pint-sized Felicity Smoak.

A few days ago, fellow users DrDoom and GliderMan posted a couple of great articles listing their favorite villains of the Marvel Films. You can read them here and here. But I thought to myself, why limit ourselves to just Marvel villains? The Winter Soldier (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) Played By: Sebastian Stan I might be biased here, since I’m a big admirer of Ed Brubaker’s Captain America run. On May 12, the Numero Group label released the massive The Best of the Best Show, a collection of Wfmu comedy Tom Scharpling and Jon Wurster's prank calls. At 16 CDs and with more than 20 hours of material, one could probably add "All" to the collection's title and get away with it. Even at this size, the collection is something close to essential for fans of the duo's deadpan, often surreal comedy. "Darren and the Greasy Funk," which you can listen to below, is a prime example of what these guys do, and along with the track, we've got Scharpling and Wurster's own recollection of how the call came about. Enjoy!Tom Scharpling: Hi, Jon. The impetus for this call started with an Allen Toussaint show you went to in North Carolina, right? Jon Wurster: Yes. In August of 2007, I went to see New Orleans jazz legend Allen Toussaint...

Starting tomorrow, on New Year’s Day, you will be able to watch every single episode of Friends on Netflix. Or if you are like me, you have all ten seasons on DVD and can watch them whenever you want. Or you can even check out episodes on TV Land and Nick at Nite. Whatever way you binge watch your Friends episodes, we at TV Overmind wanted to help you pick out the best from each season in case you want to go back and rewatch them. This is our fifth week doing this, so here are our picks for the top episodes of Friends Season 5. This was the season where Phoebe had the triplets, Ross moves in with the guys, and everyone finds out about Monica and Chandler. “The One Where Everybody Finds Out,” original air date, February 11, 1999 This season five episode of Friends is my all-time favorite episode of the series.

It is already time for TV Overmind to list our three favorite episodes from the fourth season of Friends. If you did not already know, in honor of Netflix carrying all 10 seasons beginning January 1st, we have included our top episodes from every season to watch in case you are not able to sit through 200+ episodes of the series. Though we do recommend you re-watch every single one because they are that good we wanted to provide an article every week with our favorites. Here are the picks for season four: “The One with Chandler in a Box,” original air date November 20, 1997 I must admit, the 4th season of Friends is probably my least favorite of all. Why you ask? This was the season that featured Kathy who not only cheated on Joey, but Chandler too. Then there is Emily, a person who is even more…

It is hard to believe that it already week three in our countdown of our favorite Friends episodes. This week will feature our three favorite episodes from season three. Wow, that is a lot three’s! The third season of Friends featured the break up of Ross and Rachel, Phoebe meeting her younger brother, and Chandler and Joey adopting a baby chick and duck. Though season three was not one of the better seasons of the comedy, there will still a few classic episodes. Here are our top three picks: The One Where No One’s Ready, original airdate September 26, 1996 Many Friends fans would select this second episode of the season as their all-time favorite. Unlike most episodes, this one takes place in the exact amount of time the episode airs and only includes Monica’s apartment for the setting. Ross is attending an important banquet at the museum and he has invited the entire…...

You can now even catch a rerun on many different channels (TV Land, TBS, Nick at Nite etc.) Netflix recently announced that the comedy which stars Jennifer Aniston, Matt LeBlanc, Courteney Cox, Matthew Perry, David Schwimmer, and Lisa Kudrow will be available for streaming on Netflix beginning on January 1, 2015. What a great way to ring in the New Year! We at TV Overmind love Friends so much that we decided to watch every episode again and pick our favorites. Here is our picks for the very best episodes of Season 1. For a new show there were many awesome episodes to choose from, which only adds to the countless reasons why the series was so great. The English-language title only hints at the hard-hitting action in the first teaser for Kung Fu Jungle, starring Donnie Yen. Directed by Teddy Chen (Bodyguards and Assassins), and formerly known as, variously, Best of the Best, Last of the Best, and Kung Fu Killer, the upcoming release also stars Wang Baoqiang (Iceman). Via Film Combat Syndicate, here's the official synopsis: A vicious killer (Wang Baoqiang) is going round Hong Kong killing top martial arts exponents. When convicted killer and kung fu expert, Xia (Donnie Yen) hears of this, he offers to help the police catch the killer, in return for his freedom. However, the canny and lethal killer eludes them again and again. Although the latter has made it quite clear that Xia would be his ultimate challenge,...

If you’ve paid attention to my urgent, poetic recaps of American Idol, you know we’ve arrived at my favorite time of year: the live(-ish) semifinal where a couple dozen singers with edgy haircuts and/or edgy midriff-baring tops (or both, if you’re edgy-edgy Marrialle Sellars) beg you to dial things on their behalf. It’s the esteemed Top 30 round — or as I’ve long called it, The “How Can This Be The Best Of The Best When Everybody Was Forgettable, Nervous, and Named Something Stupid?” Round. My favorite.
But I didn’t count such a stupid gimmick creeping its way into the festivities. Though 15 women qualified to perform on Tuesday’s show, only 10 would be allowed on air thanks to a mysterious prescreening round where Harry Connick Jr, Jennifer Lopez, and Paul McCartney Disguised As Sheryl Crow In The “Soak Up the Sun” Video (a.k.

More and more, martial arts action sequences are becoming integral to genre filmmaking. From the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" series (1997) and Blade (1998) to The Hulk (2003) and Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004), we’re seeing more and more cinematic heroes who are kickin’ ass. Chaplin's fame is such that his name has been used to sell hotel beds across California, some with only tenuous claims. Here is a selection of the most credible, well-established options
Charlie Chaplin's La: a black and white odyssey
Los Angeles Athletic Club
Chaplin lived in this downtown Los Angeles club for long periods during his first decade in California. In his autobiography, he praised its sports facilities: an Olympic-sized pool, cycling studio, squash courts, billiards room, and an indoor running track all open to hotel guests – which are still exceptional today. The bedrooms are classic, comfortable and recently redecorated, and there are vintage images around the halls of some of the sports stars who have trained here. Nearby is Cole's, the oldest public house in La, opened in 1908, which serves "French dip" (meat) sandwiches with jus on the side and pickle spears.

While Quentin Tarentino may think Death Proof is his worst film, there.s no denying it jump-started the acting career of stuntwoman Zoë Bell, who seems to have reached her career potential in the above theatrical trailer for Josh C. Waller.s directorial debut, the woman vs. woman battle film Raze. Is it a twist on the old women-in-prison flicks, or maybe an estrogen-filled throwback to movies like Bloodsport and Best of the Best? Both? Neither? I have no idea. One thing.s for certain: this trailer, via Yahoo! Movies, looks like the best movie you could ever possibly hope to find on cable after drunkenly arriving home from a bar, needing something to watch while some kind of food is heated in the oven. It.s straight out of the 1980s, only with better effects and 30 years. worth of professional wrestling to pay attention to. No, this kind of...

Going into the Billboard Music Awards, we know three things for sure, right? 1. Taylor Swift is going to be adorkable. (And you are going to hate that. You always do.) 2. At least half a dozen times, I’m going to have to ask Google to identify an act that, because I’m a nerd who’s well past puberty, I’ve never heard of. (How am I supposed to tell Macklemore from Ryan Lewis when I still struggle with telling Hall from Oates?) And 3. the whole massive recording industry back-slap will be followed by a TVLine Top 10 countdown of the ceremony’s best and worst.

Clone High Episode 4 ‘Film Fest: Tears of a Clone’
Written by Erica Rivinoja
Aired 11/15/2002
For all of its wacky animation and pop culture references, Clone High is a very thought-out show, one which uses every single line of dialogue and inch of screen to maximum effect. A perfect example of this is ‘Film Fast’, which – like last week’s magnificent episode – manages to cram in a half-dozen different parodies in both obvious and subtle fashions, without ever losing sight of its overarching story and goals for the famous teenage clones.
But those fragments of story bookend the episode, which revolves around a film festival at Clone High, started to curb the violent rioting that began taking place after JFK won the cross country championships – though its fair to assume the N’Sync concert that was moved to the nurse’s office might’ve helped stir the shit a little bit.
