Tom Bower, the veteran character actor best known for prominent turns on The Waltons and in Die Hard 2, has died. A family member confirmed the news to Deadline’s sister publication The Hollywood Reporter. He was 86.
Bower never had what one might call a “breakout” part, but he was an actor one recognized from, well, everywhere. His more than 180 screen credits include appearances on The Rockford Files, Lou Grant, Quincy M.E., Miami Vice, Hill Street Blues, NYPD Blue, The X-Files, Law & Order and many other TV staples of the ’70s, ’80s, ’90s and early 2000s.
And he kept on working. In the past 15 years, Bower was on Ray Donovan, Bosch, Grey’s Anatomy, Criminal Minds, The Office and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. He also played the father of Bob Odenkirk’s character on Lucky Hank and had a part in Vince Gilligan’s El Camino, A Breaking Bad Movie.

Thora Birch has been performing in Hollywood since she was just a tiny tyke, famously playing Dani Dennison in the cult Halloween classic "Hocus Pocus," where she becomes the target of the malevolent Sanderson sisters. But although one of her most memorable roles came in 1993, when she was just 11 years old, that was far from the end of her career as an actress. Birch has continued to work in the industry, lending her talents to television series, films, music videos, and even podcasts over the years.
Birch's career has been defined by a few standout performances in films that captured the imaginations of audiences everywhere, but one of the most inspiring aspects of her time in Hollywood is that whenever she has been in danger of being completely subsumed by these larger-than-life roles, she shifts gears, navigating a career as a performer on her own terms. If you haven't given...

As the mixed critical response and lackluster box office for "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny" emphatically proves, they simply don't make 'em like "Raiders of the Lost Ark" anymore.
When Roger Ebert reviewed Steven Spielberg's action-adventure classic back in 1981, he opined that it played like "an anthology of the best parts from all the Saturday matinee serials ever made." As it happens, that was pretty much George Lucas' idea when he dreamt up Indiana Jones in the first place — and what an idea it was. The Indiana Jones franchise has since become one of the biggest blockbuster sagas in cinema history, with Dr. Henry Jones Jr. himself ascending to the status of pop culture icon in the process.
While 1984's "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" has its defenders, and many fans of the series will swear 1989's "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" is just as good as "Raiders,...

During pre-production of The Hunt for Red October, the first of the Jack Ryan movies, Harrison Ford had been approached about playing Ryan, but he turned it down, and the role went to Alec Baldwin. Apparently, though, Ford had second thoughts after seeing the film, and he wanted to play Ryan in the film’s sequels. He got his wish, and he starred in both Patriot Games and Clear & Present Danger. When he took over the role, Ford told us at the time Patriot Games was released, he made a choice to completely ignore what Baldwin had done with the character in the first film. (Click on the media bar below to hear Harrison Ford) https://www.hollywoodoutbreak.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Harrison_Ford_Patriot_Games_Alec_Badlwin_.mp3 Patriot Games and Clear & Present Danger are available on DVD, Blu-Ray, and most digital platforms.

Anthony Mackie revealed the new title for Captain America: Brave New Order with an Instagram post last month, but that wasn’t the most interesting part of the post. The photo featured Anthony Mackie in costume talking to Harrison Ford behind the scenes, but fans were quick to note that Ford’s pants were ripped, seemingly confirming that his character will transform into Red Hulk.
This little detail likely wasn’t meant to escape through Marvel’s notoriously tight security, but Anthony Mackie told ComicBook.com the real reason behind Harrison Ford’s ripped pants. “See, Harrison [Ford] and I go way back. A lot of people don’t know this,” Mackie said. “This is our second time working together. He came down to Atlanta, they lost his luggage, so I gave him a pair of pants, but those are my work pants from working in the yard. Harrison, he’s a curmudgeon,...

‘Jack Ryan’ Season 4 Review: John Krasinski Cements His Legacy as Tom Clancy’s Legendary Action Hero
It’s not easy being Jack Ryan. Sure, there are the upsides to being a highly placed CIA operative and getting to jetset around the world to all kinds of exotic locales, but there’s also a whole lot of frantic running, jumping, dodging bullets and withstanding torture. As such, this week’s arrival of the fourth and final season of “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan” on Prime Video marks just another day on the job for the titular spy. And boy, is it great to have him back — even if only to say goodbye.
This final batch of six episodes arrives on the heels of Season 3 last December, and things haven’t slowed down. Having cleared his name after finding himself implicated in a global conspiracy last time, Jack (John Krasinski) is now acting deputy director of the CIA, biding his time while acting director Elizabeth Wright (Betty Gabriel) awaits her Senate confirmation.

Jordan and Liz Raposo’s company Outlier Society attached to produce. Jordan is also considering starring in the film. Deadline reports that Amazon Studios came out the winner in a bidding war over the project, paying an amount somewhere in the high six figures. Ground Control’s Scott Glassgold will also be producing the film with Jordan and Raposo.
Deadline notes that “Several studios bid and put together talent alignments, but it came down to Amazon and Netflix.” And Amazon won.

Who's your favorite Jack Ryan? For author Tom Clancy, who created the Ryanverse and wrote or co-wrote 17 novels set within it, it wasn't Harrison Ford.
The Jack Ryan role has changed hands five times onscreen; Alec Baldwin first played the character in "The Hunt for Red October" in 1990, before Ford took over and delivered the one-two punch of "Patriot Games" and "Clear and Present Danger" in 1992 and 1994. After Ford vacated the role, a succession of younger actors — Ben Affleck, Chris Pine, and John Krasinski — would appear as the titular CIA analyst in the movies "The Sum of All Fears" and "Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit," as well as the Prime Video series "Jack Ryan."
It seems "younger" was what Clancy always had in mind. According to Indiewire, Ford was director John McTiernan's first choice to play Jack Ryan in "The Hunt for Red October." However, in a 2002 interview with film...

Los Angeles, Feb 15 (Ians) Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has confirmed in a new interview that Tom Holland’s fourth ‘Spider-Man’ movie is being written.
Marvel had one of its biggest hits ever with Holland’s third-outing, ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home,’ which became the first pandemic release to gross over 1 billion worldwide.
“All I will say is that we have the story,” Feige said about Holland’s anticipated ‘Spider-Man’ return to Entertainment Weekly, reports Variety.
“We have big ideas for that, and our writers are just putting pen to paper now.”
Whether Holland will once again team up with ‘Spider-Man’ actors Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield remains to be seen. Both actors have expressed interest in returning for a new ‘Spider-Man’ movie.
Feige also confirmed to EW that ‘Deadpool 3’ will be the first R-rated movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick had previously...

When we next see Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he’ll have a new gig, and it’s a mighty impressive one. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige spoke with Entertainment Weekly about all things Marvel earlier today, and while talking about Captain America: New World Order, he mentioned that Ross will be the President of the United States in the movie.
“This is certainly a big part for Thaddeus Ross,” Kevin Feige said. “He’s the president of the United States in the film. And with Harrison, you think about Air Force One, and you think about some of his confrontations with the president in Clear and Present Danger. There’s a dynamic between President Ross and Sam Wilson. They have a history together, but in this film, we’ll be seeing the dynamic between Captain America and the president of the United States in a way that is just incredible.

While Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige usually prefers to stay schtum about future developments for the MCU, the release of a new movie often finds him opening up a little to drop teasing hints about projects in the works. The impending arrival of Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania is just such an occasion, and Feige talked to Entertainment Weekly about a variety of subjects, including future plans for Spider-Man, The Marvels and more…
On the subject of Spider-Man, he was relatively cautious, since the company has yet to reveal any plans for more movies. But at least one is in the works, according to Feige. "All I will say is that we have the story. We have big ideas for that, and our writers are just putting pen to paper now."

The first film to feature Tom Clancy's stalwart and honest action hero Jack Ryan was John McTiernan's 1990 thriller "The Hunt for Red October." In the early parts of McTiernan's film, a rogue Soviet submarine called Red October, captained by Marko Ramius (Sean Connery), has broken off from the Soviet fleet and may be planning an unauthorized nuclear strike in the United States. Jack Ryan (Alec Baldwin) pieces together some information about Ramius and concludes that he is not striking the U.S., but defecting. He is given three days to track down the Red October, confront Ramius, and confirm his suspicions.
"Red October" was successful enough to spawn a briefly popular subgenre of steely espionage thrillers that persisted throughout the front end of the decade. Jack Ryan would return in the hit films "Patriot Games," and "Clear and Present Danger" (with Harrison Ford as Ryan) and "The Sum of All Fears...

Henry Czerny is one of those actors that may not be a household name like "Tom Cruise" or "Matthew McConaughey," but if Czerny is attached to the project, trust and believe you're in for a great time. Known primarily for films your dad probably watched ad nauseum on a Sunday afternoon like "Mission: Impossible," "Clear and Present Danger," and "The Ice Storm," Czerny has also made quite the mark in the world of horror, starring in films like "The Exorcism of Emily Rose," and the criminally underseen zombie comedy, "Fido."

In big, broad, unsubtle strokes, writer Chris Sparling and veteran director Philip Noyce sketch out the background of the central character, Amy Carr (Naomi Watts), in The Desperate Hour, a spare, sparse suspense-thriller shot during the pandemic utilizing minimal resources. A recently widowed, single mother of two children, Noah ( Colton Gobbo), a sullen, withdrawn teen, and Emily (Sierra Maltby), a seemingly well-adjusted preteen, Amy is struggling with the loss of her husband a year earlier, making her, if not an inattentive mother, then a slightly distant one, isolated by her grief even as she participates in the rituals and rhythms of everyday life. Amy can’t be described as a bad mother, of course, just...

(This article does not contain any spoilers for “Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse” on Amazon Prime Video, unless you consider a character’s name to be a spoiler)
In a lot of ways, Tom Clancy was ahead of his time with his many novels that took place within a shared universe — as opposed to just doing a bunch of more traditional sequel stories like most novel series do — but the film adaptations were always one-offs that never really added up to anything as a whole. But that could very well be changing now, as Amazon and Paramount might be in the process of firing up a Clancyverse built to more modern standards, starting with the “Jack Ryan” series and now with “Without Remorse.” But there’s a big catch that we’ll discuss further down.
If a Clancyverse is indeed in the card, it’s starting with a two-pronged approach,...

After her breakthrough role in “Queen and Slim,” Jodie Turner-Smith is taking on her next major challenge: playing a military officer opposite Michael B. Jordan in “Without Remorse” and a condemned queen in the upcoming series “Anne Boleyn.”
Turner-Smith had just wrapped filming on “Queen & Slim” when she booked “Without Remorse,” which centers on Navy Seal John Kelly (Jordan), one of the most famous characters in Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan universe. In the action film, from director Stefano Sollima, Turner-Smith plays a brand new character: Lt. Commander Karen Greer, the niece of James Greer — Jack Ryan and John Kelly’s (better known as John Clark) frequent ally — and a decorated Navy Seal and Clark’s former team member.
In many ways, Turner-Smith knew what she was signing up for with the action thriller. The actor was generally aware of Clancy’s book, TV and film universe, having watched the Jack Ryan properties.

Repatriate Games: Sollima & Sheridan Opt for Clear & Present Danger with Tepid Clancy Adaptation
It’s so Clancy, you already know. Although we’ve seen resurgent preoccupations in Tom Clancy’s famed Jack Ryan properties over the past decade, a mantel taken up by his estate wherein other writers are using the Clancy name since his death in 2013, Taylor Sheridan and Will Staples tackle the long hibernating Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse, based on the 1993 novel focusing on spinoff character John Clark nee Kelly (who was portrayed by Willem Dafoe that very next year in 1994’s Clear and Present Danger and later by Live Schreiber in 2002’s The Sum of All Fears).…...

People like to say Tom Clancy’s politics never left the 1980s. That’s probably true, but movies based on his work are firmly planted in the ‘90s. Beginning with John McTiernan’s crackling (if even then historically dated) The Hunt for Red October (1990), the decade was a boom era for technocratic spy thrillers. And at heart, Clancy’s popular Jack Ryan character really works best as a technocrat. If the author ever wanted to indulge in action thrills, there was always John Clark, Clancy’s other recurring protagonist. Yet, strangely, Clark never got to star in his own movie. That changes in Without Remorse, the long-gestating adaptation of Clancy’s 1993 novel which sees Michael B. Jordan don the camo fatigues.

On Aug. 3, 1994, Paramount Pictures unveiled the Harrison Ford starrer Clear and Present Danger in theaters, where it would go on to gross more than $215 million worldwide. The Hollywood Reporter's original review of the Tom Clancy adaptation is below:
Once again Harrison Ford plays a doctor caught between a rock and a hard place. This summer he's not Dr. Richard Kimble, but once again he's Dr. Jack Ryan, U.S. Navy, and he's thrust smack-dab into the middle of the covert battle between the White House and Colombian drug cartels. Amazon Studios is now in final negotiations to land another Tom Clancy adaptation for its streaming service. They already have Jack Ryan and currently, they’re in the process of buying the rights to Without Remorse from Paramount Pictures.
