One of Hollywood’s greatest living actors, Michael Caine, is sending his fans into a tizzy over a photo posted to his personal Twitter account. The image depicts an impressive stack of Caine’s films on DVD and Blu-ray, encapsulating the highs and lows of his storied career as an entertainer. While gems like Get Carter, The Last Valley, and Harry Brown adorn the pile, cinematic blights like On Deadly Ground, Jaws: The Revenge, and The Island sit among the crowd.
The variety of films in Caine’s collection speaks volumes about the actor’s sense of humor and accomplishment. While some actors tend to want to cast their cinematic sins to the fiery depths, Caine proudly displays several of his biggest box office bombs and critically panned misfires. For example, Peter Benchley’s The Island is an insane bit of cinema featuring Caine as a kidnap victim of inbred pirates.

Luc Besson To EP ‘Rainbow Warrior’ Feature Doc
Luc Besson is exec producing a feature documentary exploring the stranger-than-fiction tale of the bombing of the iconic ship Rainbow Warrior, which is in the works with Doscville Studios, Gnz, EuropaCorp and Expanded Media. Pre-sales to Dr, Svt and Nrk have already been struck for Rainbow Warrior and a streamer and UK broadcast partner will soon be announced. The feature charts happenings in 1985 when two bombs exploded in the port of Auckland, New Zealand, sinking the ship of a small environmental group in the dead of night. Investigators initially suspected terrorists but quickly uncovered a trail of clues that lead directly to the French secret service. “This story is more relevant than ever with the seemingly constant threat of nuclear war and the environmental crusade that many young people will consider their life’s mission,” said director Edward McGurn. After a string of “Steven Seagal is…” movies — Above the Law, Marked for Death, etc. — it was time for him to direct his first: 1994’s On Deadly Ground. It, expectedly, was an absolute dud, something that co-star Michael Caine knew and acknowledged at the premiere.
In one of the many incredible stories from Nick de Semylen’s book “Last Action Heroes: The Triumphs, Flops, and Feuds of Hollywood’s Kings of Carnage” – which chronicles the best and worst action flicks of the ‘80s and ‘90s – it’s revealed that Michael Caine had a rather coy way of expressing his views on On Deadly Ground to Steven Seagal, who he was seated next to. Once the lights came up, Caine delivered his verdict to his co-star/director: “I really didn’t think it would be anywhere near this good.”

There’s no putting Clint Eastwood out to pasture.
Clint turns 91 today, and it’s worth celebrating the fact that this Hollywood legend is still turning out work at a faster clip and higher quality than practically anyone in the business. Granted, prolific doesn’t always mean better, and it can be frustrating to see his fans greet every new film as a fresh masterpiece, when only a fraction of them truly deserve the title. But consider that since the turn of the century, he has given us 17 films including “Mystic River,” “Million Dollar Baby,“ “Letters from Iwo Jima” and “American Sniper”.
Five decades ago this year, Eastwood made his directorial debut in “Play Misty for Me,” and for a time, he was dismissed as one of those “actors who directs” — a condescending label typically slapped on dilettantes who did the job just once, like Marlon Brando (with “One-Eyed Jacks...

It’s been exactly one year since the first wave of allegations against Harvey Weinstein were published, ushering in an era that has seen countless other men accused of sexual misconduct. Many of them have been fired, exiled, or ostracized as a result, but one figure whose career seems to have been relatively unaffected by the #MeToo and Time’s Up movements is Steven Seagal. That may be at least in part because he’s already considerably less prominent than he was in his heyday, but the fact remains that the actor has been accused of sexual harassment and rape by several women.
After being asked about those allegations during a BBC Newsnight interview with Kristy Wark, Seagal promptly exited.

Steven Seagal walked out of a televised BBC interview Thursday after being asked about a flurry of sexual misconduct accusations leveled against him in recent months.
The BBC interview was cut short after the British network’s host Kirsty Wark asked Seagal: “In terms of your life in America, you’ve been very much caught up in allegations of sexual harassment. You had a rape allegation against you and I wonder how you deal with all that.”
Before she could even finish her question, Seagal pulled his earpiece out, stood up and left the set. An offscreen technician can be heard offering to help “take the microphone off you.”

The Los Angeles District Attorney’s Hollywood sex crimes task force has announced today that they’ll not be charging Kevin Spacey, Steven Seagal or Anthony Anderson with sexual assault. Working in the actors’ favor was that the statute of limitations had expired in many of the accusations, which dated back to the mid-1990s. In addition, the Da was having trouble convincing the accusers to co-operate with police and testify at trial.
While black(ish) star Anderson might be able to breathe a sigh of relief, Spacey and Seagal aren’t out of the woods just yet. Both men are still facing investigation by the task force for separate alleged cases of sexual assault that are currently being reviewed to see if they’ll stand up in court.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office announced on Tuesday that it has declined to press sexual assault charges against Steven Seagal.
The announcement came from the special task force created by the Da to investigate sexual assault allegations in Hollywood. The task force ruled that the statute of limitations had expired on the alleged assault, which the accuser says occurred in 1993 when she was 18 years old.

Dutch model Faviola Dadis is further detailing her claims against action star Steven Seagal, who she says sexually assaulted her during a late-night audition when she was 17.
At a press conference in Los Angeles on Monday, Dadis shared more on the alleged encounter, saying that after arriving at Seagal’s hotel room for the audition in 2002, the actor told her to walk around in a bikini for him — which he told her to wear ahead of time.
Dadis claimed Seagal then told her he wanted to test their chemistry and proceeded to grab her nipples and grope her genitals, after which she ended the audition.

"If there is one thing worse than being offered bad scripts it's being offered none at all," Michael Caine once noted - an admission that might explain some of the roles he's taken on over his long and often wonderful career.
Michael Caine may have attained national treasure status now, but from the late 70s to the middle of the 90s, classic roles like Dr Frank Bryant in Educating Rita and Scrooge The Muppet Christmas Carol were interspersed with some - shall we say - less acclaimed movies. Yet even when the production values were awful, the script stank and the films flopped, Michael Caine's performances often remained fascinating. This isn't to say he was necessarily putting his heart and soul into them -...

Back in the day an audience’s appetite for action was sated by Glenn Ford on a horse, a sword and sandals epic, or a movie about how America won WWII for the Allies. But all of that changed when Hollywood discovered the blockbuster.
As the movies became bigger, plots got smaller and expectations had to be reduced in order sit through them. Movies like Tango & Cash or Hudson Hawk might’ve been big, but they weren’t particularly clever, and didn’t offer much in the way of thrills. Last Action Hero, hyped by Arnold Schwarzenegger as “big, gigantic, monstrous”, was basically a bad joke made at the expense of the films that had made him a star. Van Damme in Sudden Death? Once, big film stars fought to turn their personal obsessions in to earnest, uncommercial movies that made them look good and bored everyone else. Now they’re less set on playing the world-changing hero. What’s with the sudden modesty?
It used to be easy to spot a vanity project. If Steven Seagal is playing a heroic spirit-warrior who slaughters a rigful of oil workers to defend Inuit tribes, that’s a vanity project (1994’s On Deadly Ground, if you were wondering). If Mariah Carey is playing a hard-knock orphan whose vocal talents turn her into a superstar … Yep: vanity project (Glitter). If Madonna is … well, if Madonna is in it at all, it’s probably a vanity project.
But things aren’t so clear-cut these days. Take Angelina Jolie’s new movie, By the Sea. She wrote, directed, produced and stars in it, opposite her husband Brad Pitt. And...

And...

The Burning is a thriller that subverts the old maxim about revenge being a dish best served cold. Judging by this new poster and trailer, it'll be flame-grilled and served using a big old machete in the new Gael García Bernal vengeance movie.brightcove.createExperiences();Bernal plays Kai, a near-mythical figure who emerges from the Argentinean rainforest looking to snatch back the grieving Vania (Elysium's Alice Braga) from the mercenaries who have kidnapped her. They’ve already killed her dad, a poor farmer, and now they’ve come for her. But while Kai still has breath and a bloody great cleaver, they’ll be given some good reasons to think again. This one looks like combining the political edge of South America’s Cinema Novo with a classic Western yarn, lit up with the trippy visuals of an Apocalypse Now. We may never see Bernal’s Zorro, so this could...

Terrific action movies like Die Hard entertain us with white-knuckle suspense, larger-than-life villains and expensive set pieces, but they’re about as rare as intellectuals in the political system. Once you’ve spent a few years watching multiplex movies, you learn to be grateful every time a half-decent popcorn flick comes down the turnpike.
Hell, even The Expendables 3 will do, and that movie was so routine that even Bruce Willis didn’t want to do it. We don’t want Great Art, just two hours of escapism that doesn’t leave us feeling like we’ve been had.
Action cinema went off the rails when the likes of Schwarzenegger, Stallone, and Seagal became mega-successful and turned their back on the glorified B movies that made them famous in order to appear in overblown junk. Instead of The Terminator, First Blood and Above The Law, we got Last Action Hero,...

Twin Peaks is coming back. Those are five words David Lynch fans having been waiting to hear for a long time. On Monday, Showtime announced they are reviving the ABC cult classic for a nine episode run in 2016, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Both of the show's original writers, Lynch and Mark Frost, are back to pen the new season, with Lynch also signed on to direct the reboot. Now that the news is officially out, Twin Peaks devotees are wondering where the revival will pick up. Those involved in the project are staying tight-lipped about details, including whether the original cast will return,...

Steven Seagal has made only one horror movie to date, and that was 2009's Against the Dark, in which he had a cameo that found him beating off vampires. I used to love watching Steven Seagal movies. Movies such as Under Siege, Hard to Kill, Marked for Death, Above the Law and Executive Decision. But we're talking a long time ago now and I think the last time I went to go see a Seagal movie in the theater was 1994's On Deadly Ground. The guy has now become something more of a curiosity than anything else, though he doesn't seem to be done with movies just yet, but that doesn't mean you should ever expect to see him in one of the Expendables movies. In an interview with The Big Issue he was asked why he hasn't starred in one of the action star team-ups just yet and he didn't hold back: "I just didn't like some of the people involved... Life is too short to work with funny people... There's good and bad people everywhere and a...

Universal Pictures’ repeat 1-2 finish with “Ride Along” and “Lone Survivor” at the weekend box office was impressive. Any time you tie a record involving “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective” — which with “On Deadly Ground” did it for Warner Bros. 20 years ago — it’s kind of fun. But overall, it was a pretty blah weekend, with the top 12 movies combined taking in less than $100 million. The only new movie, “I, Frankenstein,” lurched into sixth and “Frozen” and “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit” switched spots, but otherwise the top ten hardly changed. Part of that was the crummy weather chilling...

Opening weekend figures for Aaron Eckhart's monster movie don't make pretty viewing, while Ice Cube enjoys the Ride Along
• More from Us box office analysis
Be careful which monster you wish for
Hideously misshapen creations, eh? You never know what you're going to get. Sometimes the best minds get it right and the result is an enduring literary treat for the ages. At other times, the beast limps off, metaphorical tail between its legs. I, Frankenstein from financier-producer Lakeshore Entertainment currently resides in the latter category after a rather dismal $8.3m (£6m) opening weekend in sixth place through Lionsgate. That is not to say the movie will not prosper on VOD and TV in the years to come: it will probably do so and a small theatrical uplift like this will have served in the end to raise awareness of a feeble offshoot of Mary Shelley's genius creation.

Continuing its reign at the top of the box office for a second week, Ride Along brought in another $21.1 million this weekend for a two-week haul of $75.4 million. Just as last week, Lone Survivor stayed put in number number two. The Mark Wahlberg vehicle earned $12.6 million this weekend, bringing it to $93.6 million in five weeks. Both films are Universal's, and they casually mentioned that the last time a studio occupied both the first and second box office spots was in 1994, when WB did it with On Deadly Ground and Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. In third place, family favorite The Nut Job and its "Gangnam Style" closer delighted another $12.3 million worth of moviegoers for a two-week total of $40.2 million. Also in its second week out, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit brought its cumulative total to $30.1 million ($9.1 million of that came in this weekend). Rounding...

With its bizarre, poorly-explained premise and derivative fantasy action, I, Frankenstein was dead on arrival this weekend. As a result, Ice Cube/Kevin Hart comedy hit Ride Along easily cruised to a second consecutive victory. After setting a new January opening record last weekend, Ride Along fell 49 percent to $21.3 million. Through 10 days, the buddy comedy has banked $75.5 million, and it's on pace to reach $100 million in the next two weeks. Don't be surprised if Ride Along 2 gets formally announced soon.In its third weekend, Lone Survivor dropped 42 percent to $12.9 million. The Afghanistan war drama has now earned $93.9 million, and is on pace to pass Zero Dark Thirty ($95.7 million) sometime this week.Universal Pictures has now held the top two spots for two weekends in a row. According to the studio, that's the first time a distributor has accomplished this feat since Warner Bros. did so in February 1994 with On Deadly Ground...

Paul Rudd and Emile Hirsch play two clashing highway road workers in Prince Avalanche, a goofy but rich comedy that adapts an obscure Icelandic film titled Either Way from 2011. Shot with a small crew and featuring a diabolical mustache from Paul Rudd, the film is written and directed by David Gordon Green.
Like a select few before him, Green is an intriguing creative force in Hollywood for his disinterest to stand still, and in the same place. He originally gained recognition by making indie film darlings like George Washington and All the Real Girls, but later challenged any type of genre categorization by following up the dark film Snow Angels with Pineapple Express. From there he went on to direct two raunchy comedies back to back, Your Highness and The Sitter, released in the same year. The 'actress' is in Grozny, shooting a film with the French bon viveur, and hanging out with colourful Chechen president Ramzan Kadyrov. But, best of all, Steven Seagal is also in town
To a news report concerning Gerard Depardieu's views on the alleged Boston bombers, and a statement so appallingly controversial that Lost in Showbiz can still scarcely believe it. "Speaking in the southern Russian province of Chechnya, where he is shooting a movie with British actress Elizabeth Hurley, Depardieu said: 'I agree with [Chechen president] Ramzan Kadyrov who said that the Tsarnaev brothers have a Chechen last name, but their upbringing is American.'"
I'm sorry, but What? Tell me I didn't just read that. And yet, there it is in black and white: "where he is shooting a movie with British actress Elizabeth Hurley".

At last it can be revealed – the Under Siege star was prepared to go to extreme lengths to ensure he got to Washington
As promised last week, this column brings you a tale of Steven Seagal so barking that even those accustomed to his idiosyncrasies may find themselves surprised. Thanks to someone who almost certainly counts as Lost in Showbiz's most eminent reader, I have in my hand an old issue of leftwing critical journal the Baffler. Therein, like the heart of a mysterious lotus flower, lies an account of what was arguably the Under Siege legend's most bonkers move.
To wit, it is claimed he planned a Senate run. Not planned a Senate run like all kinds of American public figures plan one – which is to say, mulled it over in the shower, called a couple of people, then did nothing very much about it. No, back in 1992, Seagal...

As is always the case with our Tuesday edition of the RopeofSilicon podcast, today we'll take a look at the latest DVD and Blu-ray releases as well as discuss the early reactions to Steven Spielberg's Lincoln, talk a little Oscar predictions as a result and we'll do our damndest to get to the bottom of why Laremy refuses to watch horror films as it is certainly something you refuse to accept. Poor guy. Laremy reads a little from the E.T. screenplay, I read a few choice lines from "Fifty Shades of Grey" and we finally discuss the Fall Box-Office Draft a little closer as four movies that were drafted are finally in theaters. Beyond that we answer several of your questions, giveaway David Fincher's The Game on Blu-ray, play a little Over/Under, Buy or Sell and Watch This or Watch That and generally just take part in 86 minutes of merriment.

Monsterwolf is the kind of movie that ten minutes in you'll be saying to yourself, “Oh god, I don't think I can get through this one.” It's also the kind of movie you'll pause to check the time and say, “Oh god, I can't believe it's only half over. I don't think I can do it.”
Released in 2010 as a Syfy original, Monsterwolf is about an evil oil company that's trying to drill in a small town, but is being fought by the local native American tribe. Actually, it's only one native American, but I guess they couldn't afford to flesh out the cast. If it sounds like you've seen this film before, you probably have, it's called On Deadly Ground, starring Steven Seagal.
The oil company drills into an ancient Indian burial ground and unleashes a wolf creature that's hell bent on exacting its revenge.

I asked recently about preposterous casting, inviting readers to invent the most ridiculous pairing of actor and role imaginable. But no one came close to this, which is real (via the Guardian’s Lost in Showbiz blog): the first greatest of all the vanity projects is unquestionably Seagal's Genghis Khan epic, which the On Deadly Ground legend first mentioned in 1998. He even got around to writing a script, which he instantly burnished by attaching himself to the project as director and star. Since then? Well, it remains tantalisingly unproduced, despite various missions to China to scout locations and actors. Oh, and the mafia got involved. The usual. So imagine my delight to read a dispatch from last week's 2nd International Action Film festival in the Kazakhstan capital Astana, at which Seagal appears to be combining guest-of-honour duties with his usual humanitarian commitments. Apparently, he told reporters that the Us...

He's one of the film industry's greatest treasures, and if he wants to play the emperor of the Mongol hordes, who are we to stop him?
To happier places, now, with news of Lost in Showbiz untouchable Steven Seagal. Round here, any criticism of Seagal is punishable by broken wrist, while those of you who fail to respect his cinematic canon also risk being thrown through a window, or dispatched using an improvised weapon such as a pool ball in bar towel (Out For Justice) or a microwave (Under Siege).
Now that's done, our business today is with eternally doomed movie-star vanity projects. The second greatest of these is obviously Vin Diesel's multi-gazillion-dollar Hannibal epic, which will see the radioactively dim star of the Fast and Furious franchise assume the mantle of one of the greatest military commanders of all time, just so long as shortsighted movie producers stop passing on the idea.
