All hail our Disney and Marvel overlords as they came through on schedule with the most positive box office news since “It” two months ago. “Thor: Ragnarok”‘s opening take of $121 million for exceeded $100-110 million projections. The third time out for “Thor” is not only the top-performer for the sub-franchise, but the second-best ever for Marvel outside the May-August period — only “Deadpool” in February was bigger.
Such is the dominance of comic adaptations that this impressive total is only the 19th-best opening in adjusted numbers. But for 2017, “Ragnarok” grossed $18 million more than the year’s top genre entry “Wonder Woman,” which sits at #2 for 2017, behind “Beauty and the Beast.”
This debut also marks a $35-million increase over “Doctor Strange,” another Marvel entry, on the same first November weekend in 2016. And it comes parallel to a worldwide take (in the second weekend many markets) of $427 million so far.

The Tribeca Film Festival premiere of "Una Noche," a film about three Cuban teens trying to escape the Communist island nation for a better life in the U.S., was marred by the disappearance of two of the film's lead stars -- who went missing as soon as their plane from Cuba touched down in Miami.
Anailin de la Rua de la Torre and Javier Nunez Florian, the 20-year-old Cuban-born actors, were flown from Cuba to the United States on Wednesday and were supposed to make their way to New York on Friday in order to promote the film. But instead, the pair stayed in Miami, according to 20-year-old Dariel Arrechada, the third star of the film who traveled with them.
"I'm here alone in New York, " Arrechada said.

Actress-comedian-author Jackie Guerra has been meeting with top-level producers around town discussing a daytime talk show, sources said.
Guerra would host the project, being discussed as a possible syndicated show, sources said. Latino talent has become a big part of syndication as multiple talk show pilots this past development season featured Latina hosts, and courts shows including The People's Court, Judge Maria Lopez, Judge Alex and Cristina's Court feature Latino judges.
Guerra's reps at Rebel Entertainment Partners and Brillstein-Grey are tight-lipped about the discussions and declined comment, but Guerra is no stranger to daytime as she has made a number of appearances on The Tyra Banks Show to discuss topics including her recent weight loss; she also was developing a daytime talk show with Dick Clark Prods. in the late 1990s.
Guerra is the author of books including "Under Construction: How I've Gained and Lost Millions of Dollars and Hundreds of Pounds" and hosts a show on Air America called Workin' It. As an actress, her credits include PBS' drama series American Family, WB Network's comedy series First Time Out and the feature film Selena.
