When you watch this cartoon, you need to understand that the current version is not the original 1929 version but one which had a soundtrack added about twenty years later.
The first thing I noticed was how poor the animation appeared compared to other cartoons of the silent era. In particular, the little mouse hero and his girlfriend (perhaps knockoffs of Mickey and Minnie) looked creepy and had the look of a drawing by some semi-talented kid. Still, despite that, the cartoon was fun and had an inventive style. I liked the silliness and violence...yay, violence! For the most part, this is not a cartoon kids today would like--unless your kids have very low standards. But as I am a weird history teacher who likes the history of film, I found it interesting and worth a view.
