Erratic, talented pianist Vladimir Vicek cuts short his honeymoon with his beautiful wife Leonie in order to attend the funeral of arch-rival Carnowitz. He bribes a caretaker to gain access to the dead man's crypt and desecrates the corpse. When the pianist's upcoming concert programme's announced in the states, Leoniie contacts Jerry Welch, a former lover and asks him to secretly help her find out what's actually going on with her husband. Jerry's able to secure a position as Vicek's tour manager. One highlight of Vicek's tour is he plans to perform a sonata, written by Carnowitz specifically for his oversized hands, and Vivek will play this hitherto unheard composition, which no one believes he's physically capable of playing. Just before the concert, the graveyard's caretaker appears and will tell Welch what he saw in the graveyard if he'll give him a lot of money. If not, he says what he's got to say will put Vicek on death row.
