Fantastic Film
samasdon20 August 2006
If you enjoy wholesome low-budget Southern films then you will love Southern Heart.

Filmed in the mountainous landscape around Mentone, Alabama, Southern Heart it a beautiful sight to see.

The story is easy to follow yet engaging the whole way through. My only criticism is that in the beginning scene supposedly set in New York was filmed in Montgomery and clearly done so. Just peer out the window of the office and this is easy to see.

Also, Emmy Corey's appearance as an extra holding a jump rope at the camp for disabled children made me laugh and cry and beg for more.

A masterpiece!

Sweet but familiar tale, lacks sparkle, my view, but still is acceptable for romance fans
inkblot1112 July 2014
Collin (Peter DeLuise) works for a mining company. His dad is the big boss, so sometimes Collin feels like a fly caught in a web. However, he does his darn best to please his father. Now, the boss has demanded that Collin travel to a remote area of Alabama and buy some land lucrative for mining. The only thing needed to complete the sale is a good impression from the company representative and nothing is to be said about the reasons for the acquisition. Rather deceptive, no? When Collin and his personal assistant arrive in the small town nearest to the land, both believe they have landed in the sticks. There are truck-taxis and no regard for expensive luggage. When the secretary goes to just buy some purified water at the general store, she finds there is none for sale. However, the outfit's owner wants to recommend a homemade, non-alcoholic tea that will do wonders. It makes the lady sick, whereupon another herbal remedy is advised. Before long, the PA goes back to New York. But, Collin goes to meet the land's owner, Ben Owen (Larry Mize) and is introduced to the daughter named TOMMY (Jamie Hendrix Collins, who also co-wrote the script) first. Mindful of his need to impress, Collin tries to charm this testy woman and fails. It seems she wanted to buy the land herself as a new location for a camp for disabled individuals she runs nearby. The money wasn't there. Yet, after a bad first start, Collin and Tommy meet often and like each other's looks and personalities. When she shows Collin the land, it is a very hilly area so beautiful with trees and grasslands that even he has doubts about this mission. Would Mr. Owen really sell this land if he knew what it was destined to become? What if the secret should be sprung? Also, what would his father say and do if Collin backed out of the deal? This is a sweet romance with lovely scenery. The cast is attractive and talented as well. Yet, the script seems very similar to other city-boy-meet-country-girl narratives and lacks an overall sparkle. On the plus side, it has a mild Christian theme that many viewers will welcome. All in all, it is certainly an acceptable film for romance fans. On the next rainy day, why not banish the gray skies with a view like this one?

Nothing but Love!
shmojo13 August 1999
While I enjoyed Southern Heart immensely, I couldn't help but feeling there was something missing. Yes, there was the beautiful Alabama backdrop with every color of every leaf dripping onto the screen and yes, there were heartfelt, honest performances enough to make you want to follow these characters' stories well after the end of the movie, but there just was something nagging me.

I know it wasn't Tommy (Jamie Hendrix Collins) with her feisty soul that melts you when you look into her eyes. I'm pretty sure it wasn't Collin (Peter DeLuise) who commands the screen as he's torn between his heart and his family. Was it the fact that Christy (Emily Carpenter) was so sweet and charming as Tommy's best friend that I'm simply not thinking clearly? No, that's not it.

I would've liked more Bucky Pearl. That's it. Danny Gilroy's supporting work gave the film the lighthearted spark that brought a smile when needed. It wasn't contrived humor, like a funny face, or silly speaking voice that gave Bucky presence, it was the honesty of a guy who knows what he wants and only knows one way to get it.

Southern Heart is a testament that independent movies don't have to be edgy, dark, angst-filled trips into dismal depths of humanity. They just have to be good. This is a story worth telling by people who obviously loved telling it. Above all, it is a story worth seeing.

I'm biased, but...
brenkdavis8 April 2001
this shoot was one of the most enjoyable of my life! Jamie and Emily were so warm and pleasant to be around that it spoiled me against doing big pictures... ANYWAY, the finished product is a good movie, one that I am proud to be associated with. The impact that the town of Mentone had on me is even more lasting and profound, though: it is something of a personal touchstone for purity and beauty. A picture of the Brow (see the film!) is on my desk as I type this. The majesty of this place was well-captured, and the experience of seeing it on a big screen can only hint at it's power in person...

Track down the movie and see what I mean.

Endearing southern romance, full of beauty and grace
planet-610 August 1999
Upon hearing of this intriguing movie, "Southern Heart", I was interested in how two young women could do an independent romantic movie on a limited budget and, at the same, entertain the audience. Needless to say, I did not expect much.

What I saw simply blew me away. This endearing southern romance is not only full of beauty, but also, filled with the message of grace. Jamie Hendrix Collins (writer, producer & lead actress)captivates the screen with her feisty, southern beauty. She not only shows strength, she demonstrates her strength with a subtle, sensual beauty. Emily Carpenter (writer, producer & supporting actress) gives us a wonderful performance as well. Peter DeLuise is the perfect choice as the star with his commanding presence that is intertwined with a sweetness that we have not often seen from him in the past.

Southern Heart is simply a wonderful, romantic film that reminds us of a bygone era when Doris Day and Cary Grant enchanted us while also making us laugh. Danny Gilroy, Larry Mize and Ron Adams also provide wonderful characters that remind us that most actors today do not capture the essence of the southern dialect or mannerisms.

Southern Heart is a movie that, in the environment we live today, needs to be seen by the masses. It will make you laugh and cry and...be sure to stay until the end of the credits. The producers have included message to the viewer.

This is a good story, well written and great acting. Beautiful mountain scenery. The children singing and signing (sign language) was excellent. Music typical of this part of the South. Be sure to stay until the end of the credits. There is a good message to the viewers.

Touching independent film with visual and emotional beauty.
TheTomSchmid9 July 1999
Shot during the Fall in the Appalachian foothills of Alabama -- yes Alabama -- the screen is painted with stunning panoramic images. The story is your standard boy meets girl, boy gets girl, boy loses girl, then boy and girl get back together. What makes this film enduring, is its setting and its charming characters. Peter Deluise is rather engaging as the soft-hearted Collin Jacobs. He also directed the film, and should be given even more credit for capturing such a gem on what must have been a tight-budgeted independent feature. As Tommy Owen, Jamie Hendrix Collins fills the screen with eyes, a smile and a fiery southern charm that would bring out the Petruchio in any man. Another notable, would be the supporting work of Danny Gilroy. His performance embodied the innocent southern country spirit that makes this film such a joy to watch.

Southern Heart is one of the very best
budnbetty2 September 2007
Southern Heart is one of the very best movies I have seen in my entire life. The characters were so wonderfully chosen that they are really like folk from that part of the country. Tommy Owen and Chrissy Moore are so different, yet they seem to almost think as one during the entire movie.they keep you in suspense as to what the next episode is going to be. Each person in this entire cast seemed as if they were especially chosen for the role they played The countryside was so beautiful and the characters blended into each scene as if it a real life scene we were watching. This movie made me laugh, cry and enjoy every moment of it. I could watch it time after time and never tire of seeing it.

really really really painfully awful
MemphisChicky5 July 2008
"Southern Heart" is a very poorly done movie. The script is bad... the acting is very over the top... and sappy. I would not recommend this movie to any one... the movie plays the south and its people as stupid and as jokes... very sad... very sad... and movie was done by southerners... you'd think they wouldn't go for the southern jokes and typical southern "characters"... I'm sorry that I wasted the hour and a half watching this movie... I grew up in the south and as an adult I have lived all over the states... and every place outside of the south where I've lived I've had to fight this type of stereo-typical thinking that is projected in this movie...
