Keigo Higashino's oeuvre needs no introduction since he is one of the foremost writers of contemporary Japanese fiction. Crime fiction is a wide banner, especially in Japanese literature, but this writer has made a name for himself through page-turners involving complex characters and spiraling perplexities. I sailed through “A Death in Tokyo” (2022), a who-done-it thriller which is the third installment of the Detective Kaga series, preceded by “Malice” (2014), “Newcomer” (2018) and followed by “The Final Curtain” (2023).

Crime fiction authors face a unique challenge: they must unveil the story as perceived by its diverse characters. This task involves presenting the narrative through multiple viewpoints, each adding depth and complexity to the unfolding mystery. In a way, we stand side-by-side detective Kaga who goes about investigating the death of Takeaki Aoyagi, along with his associate Matsumiya. The...

Void. “A completely empty space”… according to a quick Google search. Well, not so much, when it comes to art. In fact many an artist, whether it be in words, paint, sound, or pictures, have tried to fill it since mankind slithered out of the primordial soup eons ago. The attraction may be it is the blankest canvas of them all. And possibly the darkest…
The Void is the latest leap into the “empty space”, which lands chin deep in B-movie tentacle stew. Cooked up from the minds of Jeremy Gillespie and Steve Konstanski, both on writing and directing duties, and pretty much everything else. Their backgrounds are in art direction and practical effects, and they deftly handle the practical “Lovecraftian” creatures and blood splatter; lovingly dished up from the pages of a John Carpenter inspired recipe book.

Chicago – The final curtain is coming for the theatre company known as “Mary-Arrchie.” The Northside Chicago Angel Island playhouse is opening its final production, “American Buffalo” by David Mamet, on January 28, 2016. It also features the company’s founder, Richard Cotovsky, the “Godfather of Storefront Theater.”
Rich Cotovsky is a lifelong Chicagoan, growing up and currently living in the Rogers Park neighborhood. He was a founding member of Mary-Arrchie – an amalgamation of parent’s names from one of his early acting students – and has served as its Artistic Director since it began in 1986. His award-winning theatre company has served up gritty and memorable productions for 30 years, but “American Buffalo” will be their final show. The building that houses the space the company has had since the late 1980s, the Angel Island theatre at the Broadway/Sheridan intersection, is slated to be torn down later this year. After 30 years and over 100 productions,...

Cm Punk is gone from the WWE forever, it seems. The final curtain looks to have fallen, and the indie darling who won the hearts of millions with his unique brand of wrestling looks to have called time on proceedings. Six months on from his final appearance on WWE television – a rather underwhelming exit via the hands of Kane at the Royal Rumble – there has been no sign of Chicago’s finest on our TV screens.
The millions who initially felt it was all a clever work from the WWE – ala his mesmerising storyline with Vince McMahon back in 2011 – have conceded defeat. Punk is gone, and the witty promos and technical superiority that endeared himself to an army of fans have gone too. But the way he left was so breathtakingly unique that it ultimately left more questions than answers.

Last month we offered you a taste of the new album from “Helsinki Vampires” The 69 Eyes, in the form of a darkly sensual music video for the single “Red,” which featured a welcome introduction from none other then Elvira, Mistress of the Dark (check it out here). This week the entire record X is now available via Nuclear Blast Records, and I finally got to spend some quality lights-out time with it to drink in the full experience. “The 69 Eyes is like Batman,” says frontman Jyrki69. “We always rise and return, our only mission being to save Gotham City and serve its people. Everybody else is gone, nobody does it better & someone's got to do it.” In a weird way, he's absolutely right: like the Dark Knight himself, the band's own brand of smoldering, romantic gothic rock is cloaked in mystery, sometimes brutal, always classy, and more than a little crazy (in a good way,...

For some Broadway producers (particularly those whose star doesn’t moonlight as Wolverine), it’s the winter of their discontent. January is traditionally when Broadway attendance dips dramatically as tourists retreat from New York City. The final curtain came down last weekend on many shows, both long-running veterans (The Addams Family) and relative newcomers (Private Lives, Bonnie and Clyde). But the vultures are circling other box office weaklings that have struggled to find an audience even during the tourist-flush holiday season.

The final curtain may have closed on "Entourage," but Kevin Dillon isn't giving up on his alter-ego, Johnny Drama, just yet -- or at least not when it comes to getting girls. But Dillon may have to rein in his player ways; after all, he's starring in the new CBS comedy, "How to Be a Gentleman." In the new sitcom, he plays a gym owner who schools a client on how to be more manly -- a clear fit for the "Platoon" and "24" actor. If anyone is the professor of manhood, then it's surely Dillon-Drama.
Tell me about "How to Be a Gentleman."
It's got a little bit of an "Odd Couple" vibe about it. I would be more of the Oscar type guy. He's a guy who owns a gym and does personal training. Not only does he do the body he likes to think he trains the mind.
