She has been the voice to some of Bollywood’s biggest stars on some of the most beautiful and best tracks in the Hindi film music canon. We are talking about the incredible Madhushree. She was worked with Shankar-Ehsaan- Loy, Sohail Sen, and extensively with Ar Rahman to name a few. From ‘Neem Neem’ (Yuva), to ‘Pal Pal Hai Bhari’ (Swades), ‘Tu Bin Bataye’ (Rang De Basanti), ‘Inn Lamho Ke Daaman Mein’ (Jodha Akbar) and so many more, the singer has brought the emotion and the beauty to life with her incredible voice. And that is just in the Hindi film industry, the singer has also sung for films in the South film industries as well.
I was very excited to be able to do an email interview with one of my favorite singers and even more excited when I received the answers back. Check out Madhushree’s fabulous...

Last Saturday’s episode of The Voice India opened with a recap of the Battle Rounds so far. Our favourite coach Hr, along with coach Mika Singh opened the show on a peppy note as they sang their hit songs (that have been picturised on Salman Khan) Photocopy (Jai Ho) and Dhinka Chika (Ready)! It was wonderful to see coaches Sunidhi and Shaan dancing away whilst coaches Hr and Mika were performing. Truly a great start to week 7 of The Voice India!
Host Karan then began to introduce the first team of the evening which was none other than Team Mika! Coach Mika chose to pair contestants Jyotica and Deepa together in this round and the song he chose for them was Duniya Main Logon Ko from Once Upon a Time in Mumbai. As always, everyone’s favourite ‘Baby Doll’ singer Kanika Kapoor was helping coach Mika to train his contestants.

Kattassery Joseph Yesudas, the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and seven-time National award winner, who has recorded over 50,000 songs till date, recently recorded a Hindi song after almost two decades. The renowned singer has lent his voice for Praveen Morchhale’s internationally acclaimed Barefoot to Goa and the debutant director is naturally elated having roped in the maestro for his film.
And while Yesudas is known to have recorded as many as 16 songs in a day, for the song Naina Do Nyare in this film, the singer took nearly four hours to record it, as he wanted the song to turn out perfect. And industrywallahs who’ve heard the song vouch that the lyrics of the song in his voice makes it even more beautiful and nostalgic. The film revolves around the relationship of a grandmother and her two grandchildren and the song fits in perfectly with the theme, reveals an insider.

It is Shaan’s birthday! While we put up an exclusive interview with the singing sensation on his Jhalak journey, we couldn’t help but think about that one song which made some part of our day, year or life memorable. Shaan’s voice undoubtedly casts a different spell, making each song lovelier than the last one. Son of late music director Manas Mukherjee, Shaan’s career kick started with the hit album Naujawaan, and then there was no looking back for him. R.D Burman’s remix album ‘Roop Tera Mastaana’ followed by his albums Tanhaa Dil and Aksar, Shaan made his place in the hearts of many. Bollyspice has put together a collection of our favourite Shaan songs that make our dil go ‘mmm’!

Vikram Bhatt as a writer/director is known for his perspective on the matters of the heart and the hormones. This time it just turns a wee bit dangerous. That’s right, even before the promos were aired, his upcoming flick Dangerous Ishhq starring Karisma Kapoor as the lead have generated quite a hype as Karisma’s attempt for a comeback. Now what’s dangerous here is the fact that not many actresses have managed to mark a decent comeback after enjoying motherhood for a while. Despite the fact that she is perhaps one of the most charming mothers on the silver screen, her performance as the protagonist remains to be seen which shall speak for itself.
As per the promos, it promises to be a riveting performance by Kapoor while portraying the character of Sanjana who traverses across different births and lives searching for answers related to her love.

To continue with the fast paced array of news and incidents that sparked the Berlinale for us this year, we had our habitual meeting with Barcelona based Anna Soler-Pont, the woman behind Pontas Literary and Film Agency whose blog of her Berlinale experiences is also enlightening and inspires great interest in films based on novels.
We met Anna Soler-Pont years ago when we were thinking of creating a new database on Books-To-Film. Anna Soler-Pont understood the need and created her own business based on this idea. She is an agent for fiction writers selling international publishing rights Plus she packages, writes scripts and finds production financing for the films. She represents only 89 to 100 authors.
Her current project, now finding financing, is Traces of Sandalwood, based on the novel Rastes de sandal (Traces of Sandalwood) by Asha Miro and Anna Soler-Pont. It takes place in Mumbai, India and in Barcelona and spans the 1980s to today, interweaving the stories of Muna and Sita, two Indian orphan sisters with very different fates, although their paths cross and eventually come together in the end. It's mainly in English and Catalan. The co-writer with Anna is Coral Cruz, a script editor fluent in Catalan, Spanish and English. The director is Maria Ripoll (Tortilla Soup), born in Barcelona and educated at UCLA Film School. The stars Nandita Das is a famous Indian star. Christina Brondo (Her film, Penumbra, was acquired by IFC), the Spanish star knows India well and can easily pass for the Indian sister of Naina Daz. Ajay Jethi, the Indian male lead speaks Catalan.

2011 has been all about variety. A run-of-the-mill, do it by the numbers soundtrack just won’t cut it anymore, not with an abundance of fresh talent injecting life and creativity into the industry, and pushing the veterans to try harder.
This year it was hard to narrow the list down to just 10 great albums (and even then we had to cheat a little bit!): don’t listen to the people who say Bollywood film music is stale, because they’re obviously not looking in the right places! Here are some of the best soundtrack albums of the year to delight your ears with!
10. Shor In The City
The film had a pretty low profile but it didn’t stop two of the tracks from the Ost album rocketing up the charts in the first week of release: the frenetic, pulsating ‘Karma Is a Bitch’ hitting #10 and the lilting, lovely...

Our leading ladies and item girls will be nowhere near half as attractive without the talented singers that voice their musical numbers. What’s more, while our cinematic experiences with our on-screen goddesses have a time limit, our playback goddesses are always with us in iPods, tablets, computers, radios and more. This year Bollyspice salutes the 10 female playback singers who astounded us with their vocals throughout the year.

The celebrated classical sitar player Shujaat Khan sounded overawed by the occasion. "It's an honour to be in the presence of such a legend," he announced, gesturing to the slight but spritely looking lady in a green and gold sari who is still the undisputed playback queen of Bollywood, and whose versatile singing has provided the soundtrack for hundreds of Indian films. Asha Bhosle is now 77, but still willing to experiment. "This is not something we have rehearsed, it's a creation right now, depending on her emotions," said Khan.
The duo's new album, Naina Lagaike, is pleasantly relaxed if sometimes too easy-going, but their live performance was far braver. Khan started by demonstrating his soulful vocals and sitar-playing with a traditional piece that ended up as a frantic instrumental work-out, before being joined by Bhosle, who elegantly revived a Bollywood ballad from the early 80s.

'In the old days all the movie songs were recorded right there on set," remembers Asha Bhosle, the quintessential Bollywood singer. Now 77, Bhosle was just 11 when she performed her first song on a movie soundtrack, Chala Chala Nav Bala from Majha Bal in 1943.
