Factoring in Action
This sequel is another under the radar gem, I'll admit I was a bit skeptical about this sequel as it was given to another video game company which isn't always a good sign. But of course, this company turned out to be my favorite video game company Capcom which is good news as they've had plenty of good licensed titles under their belt, so this franchise was in good hands.
The game I felt did hit the target, but it wasn't enough as it wasn't a big hit mainly because the "G.I. Joe" franchise itself was running out of ammo in the early 90s. And it's not hard to see, the toy line still had its hits but also misses which were either a case of going dry on ideas or just reaching with them (the dino and mutant line really). As well as that 90's DIC animated cartoon run which wasn't terrible, but it really wasn't great and forgettable. Let alone the fact this game came out near the twilight years of the system which you could say is ironic. Yeah, things weren't looking good but at least with this game it was one of their final hits for the 90's and the NES.
For one thing I like there is just a bit of story going on, as you advance on the levels you actually see some other pictures on what's going on, so there actually is a feeling of plot development.
The graphical presentation is good about the same as the first game. Gameplay is pretty much the same as the first, the same basic controls and power up collecting. But what's different is that there is an RPG element, as you fight on with your fists and gun you gain some exp points which level you up, increasing the power of your gun as well as fist but also adding a new feature or two to both.
There is also this map screen which is like "Bionic Commando" where the game is still linear, but you have a choice on different routes to take from point A to B. Though I sometimes like to try and take all of them as sometimes there is something item there to find you might need in the future but also being able to gain a character. I also like that we see other missions that are a little more different, we have the typical point A to B and covert bombing raids; but you also have rescue missions where you have to find and rescue hostages much like the arcade game "Shinobi".
I really like the music in the game like the first there are plenty of memorable tracks, like the first level and others that just sing out action. A few of these are on my favorites list and the kind I wouldn't mind downloading and listening to on my phone or when I work out.
But unfortunately, this game has it's misfires which really bring the game a step down from the first. Despite all the additions there was also a lot of subtracting.
The graphical presentation I said was good but I do have some quibbles about the color scheme which I feel in some places just looks off or maybe the wrong color for that feature of the environment which at times makes the game look kind of odd, almost like someone colors a spot on a coloring book with the wrong color. There is a little backtracking in the game which I felt was unnecessary and really slowed the progression of the game up a bit.
I don't like the fact that you don't get to drive any vehicles in this sequel, which was always one of the best things about the first game in my book, let alone toy line as you always wanted to have your toys ride those vehicles. But the main problem is just the fact that you don't get have a selection of all the Joes from the game, but that the only way to have a full roster is when you advance on certain or all routes. This is problematic because it means, certain characters are missing in action for too long mainly Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes who are my favorite characters. Playing as both is awesome but as I said, you only get to play them briefly.
Let alone roster could have been better, would of like a few more familiar faces mainly ones from the Sunbow cartoon like favorites or the figures that are more useful like "Flint", "Lady Jaye", "Shipwreck", "Scarlett", "Jinx", "Roadblock" and others all still missing in action from both the first game and others. And exclude a generic character or two we don't care about or even like Wet Suit, I never liked that character from the cartoon show as he's kind of a blowhole, but just not that useful in the game as there are no underwater levels.
The other main problem is the difficult in the game is uneven and imbalanced, from certain level segments that get ridiculously tricky for no particular reason. But mainly the boss and mini boss battles, some of them are just cheaply hard that you must resort to almost cheap tactics to win. Certain levels as well as the boss and mini boss battles alone feel a bit redundant, as they're almost the same but just dressed differently. Also the villain Roster could be better as I get they were using some of the toy line but once gain would of liked to see a few more familiar faces like "Firefly", "Zartan and his Dreadnocks", "Zamot and Tomax" and others once again missing in action.
Overall this was a good sequel which hit the target if not the bullseye, as a fan of the G.I. Joe franchise I think we can do better, but still being the final game of the franchise for this system it ended on a solid note. So, if you're a fan of the G.I. Joe franchise this game is worth a shot.
