I first saw this film along with a few other Stan Brakhage films on one fateful day when I was a senior in high school where I took a film studies class. After the film was over, the teacher asked the class for their comments. As can be expected, the class know-it-all "arty" types all heaped raves about this film. When it was my turn, I responded: "I'm sorry, I don't get it." Of course they all turned to me and looked at me with smirks and responded how "its a very personal film", "Brakhage doesn't make films for mass consumption" etc. Well thats all nice and good. My dad took home movies of me when I was two and I suppose you could say they were "personal" and "not for mass consumption" also. However, my dad didn't force captive students to watch them either. Plus SIRIUS REMEMBERED is the only film I can recall ever giving me a migraine. The shaky camera work, out of focus shots and loops of the same shots over and over may be some cultural elites idea of art, but its not mine. If you want to show students someone's home movies, maybe I can find the old 8mm films I made in the 6th grade where I filmed model airplanes and doll houses being blown up with cherry bombs. They might not be art, but they won't give your students a migraine either.
