Rather surreal...
planktonrules29 August 2009
This short film was sponsored by the National Film Board of Canada and it's hard to describe, but I'll try.

The film consists of drawings that are minimalistic--only a portion of the screen is filled--the rest is blank. Mostly, the drawings consist of black lined drawings with occasional bits of color. It's very simple, but effective.

In the opening scene, what looks like an old lady is rooting around garbage cans looking for cool stuff when she happens upon a box. She takes it back to her humble home and paints it up with a star and Merry Christmas/Joyeux Noel written on the side. As Canada is bilingual, the message keeps alternating for a few seconds in one language and then to the next. I really can't adequately describe what happens next other than it celebrates the Christmas story--the three magicians, the birth in the manger and the star. But it's all told in such a strange manner that it defies my going any further.

Overall, while a very confusing tale to say the least, I liked the artwork and style quite a bit. It's worth a look if you are into art films--otherwise, it may just leave you baffled.

Schroedinger's Box
boblipton10 April 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Much has been made of Schroedinger's Cat: there is a cat inside a box, which has an equal chance of being alive or dead. How do you tell which it is? To mere mortals, this all seems ridiculous. Open the box and find out. Some people think this is a great paradox and illustrates Heisenbergian uncertainty. Schroedinger himself thought this illustrated a fundamental flaw in quantum physics.

Suppose, however, we shift the focus from the cat to the box. Imagine, if you will, the box. Paint a star on it and drop a coin into it. If you climb into it, you enter a universe in which you are warm and happy, while the rubbish men come and take the empty, useless box away. Is that not more wonderful than any cat could be?
