Shabazz Palaces’s aptly titled Exotic Birds of Prey opens with a guarantee to spin “the latest in eclectic music.” Depending on your appetite for adventure, that will come off as a promise or a threat. Like last year’s Robed in Rareness, the album feels at times designed to weed out casual listeners, with Shabazz Palaces mastermind Ishmael Butler making no effort to sweeten his brash experimentalism with memorable hooks or conventional song structures.
Exotic Birds of Prey maintains an unsettling vibe as it wanders through hip-hop subgenres and warps them into abstractions of themselves. “Exotic Bop,” for one, feels chaotic and claustrophobic, with cavernous synths blurring the edges around guest Purple Tape Nate’s monotonously simple vocal melody. The glitched-out “Goat Me” similarly features reverb-drenched interjections from Cobra Coli buried beneath a spacious cloud-rap beat.

Despite Rei's efforts, she hasn't been able to find him. Mana, chuckling, remarks that it's typical for a player like Sunraku to skip the first town, labeling him a "trash game player." She encourages Rei to keep looking for him and express her feelings. This suggestion makes Rei blush.

He discovers a quest called "Tour to Rabituza," where players need to defeat a higher-level monster with Vorpal weapons equipped. This summons a Vorpal Bunny in town, leading players to Rabituza. Opening credits never really went away (think of the slow-mo demolition of “The Good Fight”), but they are definitely having a moment.
“I really love title sequences,” “Chucky” showrunner Don Mancini told IndieWire. “ I lament the loss of titles. I just love the ritualistic value of them.”
When correctly deployed, opening credit sequences can do some heavy lifting for TV shows. The best title credit sequences set the tone for the show, hint at what’s to come, and, depending on when they’re used, underscore what just happened in the cold open. But in the wake of streaming upheavals and changes to how we consume content, they’ve been missing more and more. Or skipped more and more, depending on the options of a given platform.
But there are gifts to the sequences that compensate for shaving a minute or two off your watch time. For Prime Video’s...

It’s been almost three decades since “Scatman (Ski-Ba-Bop-Ba-Dop-Bop)” — a novelty dance track featuring rapid, part-rapped, part-scatted and mostly nonsensical rhymes — shot to the top of music charts around the world, especially in Europe. Now, the man behind the song is getting the biopic treatment.

Fredo Bang has released a high-energy music video for his newest single, “Bop.” In the clip, the rapper and his crew head to a strip club armed with hundreds of dollar bills as Bang spits, “I don’t dance in the club, I just bop.”

My mindset entering Soleil Moon Frye’s autobiographical documentary kid 90 anticipated a fun, nostalgic, low stakes look at kid celebrities. That’s what the slew of happy photos depicting teenaged Stephen Dorff, Brian Austin Green, and Balthazar Getty smiling sells: their childhood adventures as inseparable friends and peers removed from the otherwise tumultuous Hollywood machine. Frye only adds to that image when starting things off by saying, “this is an account of what it meant to be a child in the 1990s.” Expectations are therefore set for a universally relatable experience since I too was a child in the 1990s… just without having my face on Bop magazine covers. And while that is exactly what Frye delivers, joy isn’t the familiar through-line connecting our two worlds. It’s pain.

With the world coming to a total standstill in the pandemic, Andy Samberg’s quirky time-loop rom-com genre mashup Palm Springs became a representation of everyone’s emotional isolation, and a blueprint for us to find our redemptive souls in the process. “All of a sudden, it morphed from this movie that blended genres and was really fun conceptually for us,” Samberg says, “to people saying this movie is boiling down what we’re all going through.” It’s no wonder really that Palm Springs has been lauded as the comedy of the year. With that success, and then the return of his Golden Globe-winning performance in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Samberg has much to celebrate. Here, he picks out some onscreen favorites, from his early days experimenting with The Lonely Island, to working on Saturday Night Live, with guilty pleasures and life lessons along the way.

With the increased domination of hip-hop music on the charts every year, the rap field is an especially interesting one to watch out for at the Grammys. Previous rap albums that have won went on to become classics, like Kendrick Lamar’s “To Pimp A Butterfly” and Lil Wayne’s “Tha Carter III.” Let’s take a look at this year’s top contenders.

Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande went into the awards with the most nominations: nine apiece, including seven for their chart-topping collaboration “Rain on Me.” That made “Rain on Me” the most nominated video of the year, which isn’t too surprising given Lady Gaga’s strong track record at these kudos. Before this year she had won 13 times over the course of her career, including seven for “Bad Romance” in 2010. That was the second most awarded video of all time, behind only “Sledgehammer” by Peter Gabriel, which won nine trophies in 1987.

It was Charlotte rapper DaBaby's first-ever performance for the VMAs on Sunday, and a stellar night for it; DaBaby is up for four awards this year, including artist of the year, best hip-hop video, and best choreography for his music video for "Bop." With The Jabbawockeez at his side, DaBaby performed a medley of hits "Peephole," "Blind," and "Rockstar." His performance was a nod to recent protests against police brutality, with DaBaby riding cuffed in the back of a cop car before ending the performance against a backdrop of fire. Beyond this, it also referenced the Covid-19 pandemic, as during "Peephole," the set included cardboard boxes, which were knocked over and turned out to be full of face masks. You can watch the story unfold for yourself with his full performance above.

DaBaby is the latest artist slated to perform at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards. Though he was nominated for Song of the Summer last year with “Suge,” this will mark the rapper’s first time performing at the awards show, with his star having risen considerably with “Rockstar,” one of the blockbuster songs of this year.
Black Eyed Peas will also be taking the stage for what, surprisingly, is their first-ever VMAs performance, too, though they have 10 nominations and two wins under their belt from previous years. They will be performing “Vida Loca” from their new album, “Translation,” which was released June 19. This year, they are nominated for two awards: best collaboration for “Ritmo,” which features Bad Boys For Life and J Balvin, and best Latin video for “Mamacita.”
“Looking back, I can’t believe Black Eyed Peas have never played the MTV Video Music Awards,” founding member Will.

We may still have a few questions about this year's MTV Video Music Awards - like who's hosting the night of music - but at least we know everyone who's nominated! Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande are leading the pack of nominees with nine nods each thanks in large part to their instant club collaboration "Rain on Me," followed by Billie Eilish and The Weeknd with six nominations each. Not only does this year's list of nominees host two quarantine-specific categories (best music video from home and best quarantine performance) but it also has a couple of history-makers: Eilish is the first artist in Vma history to nab two video-of-the-year nominations while still in their teens and Grande is the first artist to be nominated for video of the year three years in a row since Beyoncé's run from 2014 to 2016, just to name a couple. Who will take home a "Moon Person" this year?...

On April 23, 1985, a billion-dollar beverage company felt the heel of a boot descending on its windpipe. Coca-Cola’s rival, Pepsi, was everything the late 19th-century drink was not — smooth, new, and sweet enough to quench the carbonated corn syrup-addled taste buds of the Reagan era. Instead of riding the storm, Coca-Cola buckled, changing their lauded secret formula to quell the masses. A new Coke, called New Coke, was born. Consumers revolted. The protests became the Boston Tea Party of colas, proving that the eternal flame of the American spirit is...

The Dceu isn’t too worried about interconnectivity anymore, with most of its movies existing in their bubbles at this point, but there is a common thread running through Birds of Prey and the upcoming The Suicide Squad. And that’s Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn. Slightly unexpectedly, her recent all-girl team-up movie didn’t sow the seeds for the Task Force X sequel, so fans have wondered if it actually takes place prior to BoP in the timeline.
Writer/director James Gunn has all but spelled it out for us, though. In one of his regular Q&As with fans on Instagram, the filmmaker was asked last night whether his movie takes place after Birds of Prey. Gunn didn’t dive into the ins and outs of it, but he did say: “Tss takes place in the year it comes out.” In other words, yes. By the sounds of it,...

The good-natured, yet hyper-violent Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn is amusing enough to get by, a sort-of Deadpool-lite strung together with a wink, a pagan’s prayer and a lot of chicken wire, and absent the Ryan Reynolds picture’s impudent, gruesome, genuinely transgressive and hugely entertaining impulses. But Bop is a distinct upgrade over the Oscar-winning-epic-that-shall-not-be-named from whose befouled loins it sprang came, and it allows Ewan McGregor, as the unctuous and evil villain Black Mask, the most fun he’s probably ever had on screen. Margot Robbie, of course, chews it up in grand style too as our bubblegum-snapping “heroine,” the admittedly insane but magnetically likable Harley Quinn, the Joker’s ex-girlfriend, whose mismatched wardrobe reflects the bells and whistles constantly jangling about inside her head but is also a continuing act of found fashion art, like what might happen if...

Next week’s Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) marks the second time Margot Robbie has brought the titular Harley Quinn to life. And, after 2016’s jumbled Suicide Squad, it’ll answer a lot of fans’ prayers, featuring the Clown Princess breaking up with the Joker and forming her own all-female vigilante team. The movie will pair her up with Huntress, Black Canary and Rene Montoya. But sadly, not Poison Ivy.
Harley and Ivy’s friendship – and sometimes, something more – has been a fan favorite dynamic ever since the pair became best pals in Batman: The Animated Series. It’s a disappointing, then, that there doesn’t seem to be any plans to explore the relationship between Dr. Harleen Quinzel and Dr. Pamela Isley in the Dceu. However, it’s something that Robbie wants to see just as much as the fans do.

For a long while, there’s been a lot of talk that Black Mask would be depicted as gay in Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). In fact, We Got This Covered was the first outlet to report on it last year. However, it’s been difficult to ascertain whether this is the case from the trailers, which haven’t focused much on Ewan McGregor’s crime boss and his number one henchman, Victor Zsasz, as played by Chris Messina.
At the premiere for the Margot Robbie-starring movie, though, Variety cornered McGregor and Messina and asked them head-on for the truth about the nature of their characters’ relationship. The pair danced around the answer for a bit before McGregor seemed to cut through the waffle and confirm that, yes, the two villains are gay.
Are Ewan McGregor and Chris Messina's characters gay in #BirdsofPrey?...

Roddy Ricch’s “The Box” enjoyed a second week at Number One on the latest Rolling Stone Top 100 Songs chart. Ricch’s 50.9 million streams easily kept a comeback single from Justin Bieber at bay — the Atlantic Records rapper out-streamed Bieber by more than two-to-one.
Ricch’s other hit, “Ballin” with Mustard, also climbed two spots on the latest chart, moving from Number Nine to Number Seven thanks to 15.5 million streams. The pair of Ricch hits were joined in the Top 10 by a third, “High Fashion” (14 million streams), which also features Mustard.

One week before Thanksgiving, Melany Centeno, a professional dancer with a decade of experience, posted a call-to-arms on Instagram. Centeno enjoyed the rapper DaBaby’s new “Bop” video, calling it “super fire.” But after messaging colleagues who danced in the clip, she accused DaBaby of underpaying some of them — as low as $200 for at least 20 hours of work, according to three dancers who participated. “I’m not gonna stand idly by and let other people be exploited and not speak on it,” Centeno declared.

Robert Zemeckis is in final talks to direct sci-fi thriller “Ares” for Warner Bros., an individual with knowledge of the project tells TheWrap.
“Birds of Prey” screenwriter Geneva Robertson-Dworet wrote the script which centers on an astronaut whose space capsule crash lands in the African desert. As the astronaut rushes to reunite with his family, it’s revealed that his astronaut’s mission is part of a larger conspiracy and that he may be carrying a secret that could forever change the world.
Along with directing, Zemeckis will also produce “Ares” with his ImageMovers partners Jack Rapke and Steve Starkey. Rideback’s Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich are also producing. Rideback produced awards contender “The Two Popes” as well as 2019’s billion-dollar hit, “Aladdin.” Kristin Winkler is also producing. Roland Emmerich is executive producing. Rideback’s Ryan Halprin will executive produce as will Jackie Levine.

The National Association of Theatre Owners and Comscore announced on Friday reported that global box office total for 2019 passed $42 billion for the first time ever, as a dip in domestic revenue was made up for by surges in overseas markets, particularly in Asia.
In addition, the final total for the 2019 domestic box office clocked in at $11.4 billion. Although down 4% from last year’s record $11.85 billion, it topped the $11.38 billion earned in 2016 to become the second highest grossing year of all time.
While the chances of breaking the 2018 domestic record were lost after a very sluggish first quarter, Nato execs noted that the box office quickly rebounded thanks to a slew of hits that started with the Marvel Studios one-two punch of “Captain Marvel” and “Avengers: Endgame” in the spring.

Harley Quinn breaks out another deep-cut character in an ep that showcases the talented cast and introduces the first true flaw in the show.
This Harley Quinn review contains spoilers.
Oh, DC, what are we going to do with you? Harley Quinn is seven episodes in and has so far been an entertaining take on the titular anti-heroine. But this week DC Universe's flagship mature animation demonstrates where the creative team's imaginations stop, which is apparently when it comes to already established, canon, same sex relationships.
With Harley (Kaley Cuoco) still on her quest to join the Legion of Doom she chooses to help break out Wanda Sykes' Queen of Fables who was briefly featured in an earlier episode. The villainess is quickly out of control as she slaughters an entire family reunion with the Big Bad Wolf and then sends the Three Little Pigs to eat the bodies,...

The final trailer for Birds of Prey dropped yesterday ahead of the movie’s release in less than a month, and it sure seems like a good time. From the looks of things, the next installment of the resurgent Dceu appears to be set to continue the franchise’s recent creative renaissance, with the studio also reportedly now convinced that The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn is set to be a box office hit following the highly-publicized and extensive reshoots that were helmed by John Wick’s Chad Stahelski.
Throughout production, one of the most pressing questions about Birds of Prey was how it would handle the green-haired elephant in the room, namely Jared Leto’s divisive take on the Joker that featured in Suicide Squad. Recently split from the Joker, Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn — after a brief Cheez Whiz bender — proves she no longer needs her mastermind ex-boyfriend (played by Jared Leto) in the new, kickass “Birds of Prey” trailer. Instead, she opts to build her own team of female superheroes, including Black Canary, Huntress and a cop.
“He’s after all of us,” she tells the group. “You betrayed him. You killed his Bff. And you’re dumb enough to be building a case against him. So unless we all want to die very unpleasant deaths, we’re going to have to work together.”
Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Rosie Perez star alongside Robbie. Their characters work together to save a young girl from the warlord Black Mask (Ewan McGregor), who has it out for all of them.

Wait, did Harley Quinn just inhale cocaine? Indeed she did. The final trailer for Cathy Yan’s Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) has arrived in all of its zany, energetic abundance of costume changes, ultraviolence, and yes, drug use. Who needs the Joker? In this playful and colorful new trailer for “Birds of Prey,” Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn spends some time moping over her breakup with Jared Leto’s Joker from “Suicide Squad,” including spraying some cheese whiz into her mouth. But in no time, she’s back to her old fiendish self.
Robbie stars in the superhero team-up movie along with Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jurnee Smollett-Bell and Rosie Perez as they form an all-female squad of superheroes taking on the warlord Black Mask, played by Ewan McGregor.
They’re forced to work together to save the life of a young girl and save themselves from the men who want them dead, and no man is going to keep them from having a good time doing it.
