This movie is one of the rare and one of the new examples among Chinese war movies in that it is a description of war in the children's eyes and the children's experience. In contrast to most other Chinese war movies, this one is not based on a true story, however, many similar or even identical stories did happen in real life and the touch of reality is therefore not lost. What is more is that there is also added brutality of war, seen through the children's eyes, something often avoided in the typical political propaganda.
