It’s been a busy past 12 months for Capra, from touring the world to releasing a new album, Errors , to ending the year as part of a stacked Dia De Los Deftones lineup. But amidst all of the chaos, vocalist Crow Lotus still manages to find plenty of time to watch anime, read manga, stream, and cosplay. From anime beginnings with shows that were probably too violent, to falling down the Food Wars: Shokugeki no Soma rabbit hole, her anime fandom plays a big role in all of her creative endeavors. Check out the discussion below to learn more about the magic of the fan communities and the welcoming arms of anime and hardcore. When did you first start watching anime? For fans of video games, blowing up stuff in the desert, or both, Fallout has been a recent treat. It mixes a post-apocalyptic setting, a misfit gang of weirdos, and a Looney Tunes approach to violence into a potent cocktail of madness, and its audience is already primed for a Season 2. However, that probably won’t come for a while because, ya know, they have to make it and all. But that’s not a problem, because if that venn diagram from above also includes enjoying anime, I have 10 series for you that might capture some of those Fallout vibes and keep you traveling the wasteland for more. 1. Train to the End of the World This spring 2024 release is the newest entry on this list but it’s already making a name for itself thanks to its sci-fi/comedy/horror approach to the life that goes on after the end of everything.

The “death game” sub-genre sees ordinary people fight for survival through murderous games, puzzles, and exercises. These heightened stories have become so popular because of their tendency to turn torture and suffering into a twisted form of entertainment — a concept that feels increasingly authentic with each passing year. There are dozens of anime that fit the murderous death game mold between Deadman Wonderland, Danganronpa, and Gantz. However, there are also a handful of series that specifically follow Takashi Miike’s As the Gods Will and Hwang Dong-hyuk’s Squid Game’s example, where childish recreational games and activities become the competitive tools of these characters’ destruction. Kaiji, Liar Game, Death Parade, Alice in Borderland, and Btooom! all follow this model to some extent. As the Gods Will predates Squid Game by six years, but there’s fascinating crossover between these two death game stories. As the Gods Will is the...

Along with Keishi Otomo and Takashi Miike, Shinsuke Sato completed the trio of Japanese directors who truly excel in action anime/manga adaptations, with his works in “Gantz”, “Library Wars”, “I am a Hero” etc speaking for themselves. “Kingdom 2: Far and Away”, which continues the adaptation of the homonymous manga by Yasuhisa Hara, highlights the fact in the most eloquent fashion as it currently streams on Netflix, just before the third part's release later this year.

The world of Asian cinema has seen a vast share of their most recent fare emanating from manga adaptations, with titles ranging from Rurouni Kenshin, “Death Note,” Blade of the Immortal, and Gantz finding their inspiration coming from its pages. Such is the origins of the latest Netflix release in Eiichiro Hasumi's adaptation of “Re/Member,” which started out as a multi-year run in the early 2010s and was followed by an anime adaptation several years later before this current live-action feature.

If you are wondering if Squid Game has a source material past its script, then you aren’t alone. It’s one of the search terms that trended after the Korean social horror hit Netflix last week, and it’s not hard to understand why. In this era of peak content, a notable chunk of the stories that make it to our screens in the form of TV shows and movies are adaptations of some kind. When it comes to genre storytelling specifically, many of those adaptations have anime, comic book, or manga source material—one look no further than the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a chief example. So is Squid Game based on an already published story?
The short answer to this question is: no. Squid Game has no source material other than its stellar script. However, writer-director Hwang Dong-hyuk (previously best known for features like 2017 historical epic The Fortress...
