Clever animation but it doesn't look good and has no substance to cover the gap

In the mind of a dying dog, we retrace our steps along the tiresome road called the A13 trunk road, back to the dog's birthplace of Barking. The streets are busy and the landscape bleak as he makes his journey and it doesn't help that all the animation was done on a palm pilot and pixelated from there onto the screen. I can see how the idea was clever because the animation style clearly did enough to get it funded for originality however it does make it hard to get into.

Technically I am impressed because using those damn machines is hard enough as it is but making an animated short on one must take skill and the patience of a few saints. The story is less clear though and if it weren't for the plot summary on an animation website I would have had no clue what it was about or the detail of the film. This is a problem because I do at least to be interested in what is happening on screen to be able to watch even a short film – here I just wasn't and it just seemed to be a collection of sketched cityscapes. Another problem was that it wasn't very nice to look at. Again I am sure it was hard work and it is original but it didn't look good at all and it looked as basic and uninspiring as something sketched on a Palm Pilot would look.

Overall this is a pretty poor film although I give it props for trying and being imaginative and brave. The concept is more about the animation than the content and this is a problem because it neither looks great nor has any substance to keep you interested. Watch it as part of seeing new and clever animation in the UK but other than that it ain't much cop.
