Jeopardy! fans are sounding off over one of the clues from the July 3rd game, as host Ken Jennings ruled against one player’s initial answer. The match which saw one-day champion Kelly Proulx take on Sarasota-based attorney Dana Keane and Burbank-based customer support team lead Isaac Hirsch, raised eyebrows with the $800 clue in the category “Don’t Go, Jason.” The clue read, “Playing the evil Gideon in this Edgar Wright flick, Jason Schwartzman gets his head kicked in; K-o, Cera Cera.” The correct response was Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, but Isaac’s initial answer of Scott Pilgrim was seemingly not accepted, leading him to extend the response, saying, “What is Scott Pilgrim…. vs. The Universe?” Ken Jennings for Jeopardy! and Michael Cera in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World “Sorry, no,” Jennings responded before Kelly buzzed in with the right answer. As some may know, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World...

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: A Star-Studded Cult Comedy That Doesn’t Fit in Any Bollywood Box
The year was 2000. The place: A local South Asian grocery store in suburban Michigan. The occasion: Friday night, baby, the night for browsing the store’s DVD library for a rental, and my father’s pick for the week — “Andaz Apna Apna.”
I don’t think Rajkumar Santoshi’s seminal comedy was made with a nine-year-old American girl in mind, but I ate the film up. It’s not overtly childish or adult, but boasts the kind...

Every summer, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences invites a deluge of new members to join its ranks. Since #OscarsSoWhite back in 2015, the Academy has moved away from its elitist tendencies and toward embracing younger and more diverse artists and executives from all over the world. This year’s invited class is no exception.
If the invitees all accept Academy membership, the total members will number 10,910 and voting members 9,934. And with the addition of the 2024 members, 35 percent of Academy members identify as women, 20 percent of Academy members are from underrepresented ethnic and racial communities, and 20 percent of Academy members are from countries or territories outside the U.S.
As usual, a slew of Oscar nominees and winners are gaining admittance to the club (71 Oscar nominees and 19 winners), including actors Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), Sandra Hüller, and Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Holdovers”), costume designer Holly Waddington...

"Have you ever fired two guns whilst jumping through the air" This is just one of the many questions that police officer Danny Butterman (Nick Frost) has for Metropolitan Police Sergeant Nicholas Angel (Simon Pegg) when the city cop is reassigned to the rural town of Sandford, Gloucestershire in Edgar Wright's splendid action comedy "Hot Fuzz" (which just might be the best movie in the Cornetto Trilogy).
The bumbling but charming Butterman has never seen any real police action in this little village, so when Angel shows up, he's loaded with questions. Soon enough, they're both loaded and armed to the teeth when they learn there's a sinister plot at the center of Sandford that has kept it clean and peaceful for years. When they discover that the village elders, including Danny's father, Inspector Frank Butterman (Jim Broadbent), have been killing off residents who threaten to uproot the town's quaint foundation,...

What are the odds that you will run across someone else wearing exactly the same outfit as you at an event? Some may consider it a fashion faux pas and probably one of the biggest worries of any celebrity, but I prefer to see it as a testament to their exquisite, shared sense of style.
Recently, Brie Larson and Alexandra Daddario were photographed at the 7th Edition of the Filming Italy Sardegna Festival photocall. Shocking everyone, they showed up wearing the same black-and-white “Maryanna” polka dot dress by Santa Barbara-based label Dôen—and no, they didn’t plan it.
Although many would likely assume that the two would feel embarrassed or awkward for dressing alike, I don’t think it bothers them; they are both stylish and have similar feminine tastes anyway. Besides, the dress is the perfect way to kick off summer in Italy.

BenDavid Grabinski is a fan of offbeat sequels.
“I’ve spent a long time being in rooms pitching very left-turn sequels for preexisting IP and movies and TV shows,” the writer-producer told TheWrap. “And usually, people are like, ‘No, that’s too bold. Can you just do something much simpler?’ And then they don’t hire me.”
But in the case of Netflix series “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off,” Grabinski found a kindred spirit in Bryan Lee O’Malley, creator of the original “Scott Pilgrim” comic book series, which was adapted into a live-action movie directed by Edgar Wright in 2010.
For inspiration, Grabinski and O’Malley watched every episode of David Lynch’s brilliant if polarizing 2018 return to his cult television series “Twin Peaks,” as well as movies like “Evangelion: 3.0+1.01 Thrice Upon a Time,” “Gremlins 2: The New Batch” and “Ocean’s Twelve.” “We both respond to big swings. ‘Scott Pilgrim’ was a big swing.

After 20 years, a graphic novel series, a feature film and a video game, it’s no wonder that Bryan Lee O’Malley was hesitant to dive into another adaptation of his Scott Pilgrim series. After what he describes as a “jokey” conversation with BenDavid Grabinski, the two decided to flip the script and take the Netflix series in an entirely new direction for Scott Pilgrim Takes Off.
The Netflix series begins similarly to the other tellings of Scott Pilgrim’s story, but diverges when Scott seemingly loses during his battle with Ramona’s first evil ex. Suspecting that Scott may still be alive, Ramona goes on her own journey tracking down the evil exes and finding out what really happened. Both Lee O’Malley and Grabinski were excited for this adaptation to not just feature Ramona as the driving narrative force, but also give a greater backstory to her connection with each of the exes.

Epic Games introduced the Fortnite Festival as a new way to indulge in the game’s world, initially launched as a PvE title. Based on the formula popularised by cult classic titles like Rock Band and Guitar Hero.
Since new content keeps coming to the title, fans are always looking for new features released officially or sometimes leaked by content creators. This time, something similar happened when I leaked information about the Festival’s PvP mode, and a fan spotted something exciting.
Scott Pilgrim May Be Coming to Fortnite Festival, as per an Observation Made by a Fan. The game brought back a lost genre.

If Chris Evans hated one thing about his role as Captain America, it was the time he spent making public appearances for the promotions. Evans shared that his anxiety made him a less-than-ideal candidate for such appearances. He mostly avoided appearing in shows where he had to perform in front of an audience, which meant he was one of the few MCU lead stars not to host an SNL episode.

Aubrey Plaza is a charming actress and delightful comedian, but what catches the attention of her fans the most are the very quirky characters she often chooses to portray. In her breakthrough role in Parks and Recreation, the actress is deadpan and sarcastic, while in her latest The White Lotus’ the actress is known for her cynicism while battling marital tension. Even in the upcoming Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis, the actress plays an ambitious power-hungry journalist.

So, what is it about the actress starring only in such unconventional roles? Plaza states that it is just her way of making the world a better place by accepting characters that one normally would describe as outsiders.

If you’re reading this, you’ve likely just finished the first episode of the new Netflix anime series Scott Pilgrim Takes Off and yelled something along the lines of “holy garlic bread!” at your shiny streaming device. Because — holy garlic bread! — Scott Pilgrim is dead.
Let’s back up for one second. For fans of the 2010 movie Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, the new Netflix anime series starts in a familiar enough fashion. We meet the unemployed, bass guitar-playing Toronto resident (Michael Cera), a member of the band Sex Bob-omb who is kind-of-sort-of-but-not-really dating a 17-year-old named Knives Chau (Ellen Wong). His situationship with Knives gets even more complicated when Scott meets new girl in town Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead). When Sydney Sweeney brandishes a curiously phallic laser gun for her reimagining of Barbarella, she could be doing so under the watchful eye of Edgar Wright. According to Deadline, Wright is in talks to direct Barbarella, with Jane and Honey Goldman negotiating to co-write the script.
As Deadline notes, bringing Jane Goldman aboard shows how serious Sony is about assigning strong talent to Sweeney’s dream project. Jane Goldman’s writing credits include screenplays for Kick-Ass, Kingsman: The Secret Service, X-Men: First Class, Stardust, the upcoming Kingsman: The Blue Blood, and more.
During the backlash for Sony’s abysmal Marvel film Madame Web, Sweeney said she joined the film to position herself to pitch Anyone But You. The rom-com was an admirable success, with $219M+ worldwide. With Sweeney being a bankable star at the studio, Sony is ready to shoot her into space for an action-packed remake of Roger Vadim...

The Barbarella feature starring Sydney Sweeney is getting more oxygen.
Edgar Wright is in talks to direct the film for Sony Pictures, with Jane Goldman and Honey Ross in talks to write the script, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. The project is still in early development and is planned as a new take on the character that originated in a French comic series from Jean-Claude Forest.
Barbarella, a mercenary who travels the universe, was portrayed by Jane Fonda in a 1968 movie version that has become a cult favorite. Sweeney’s involvement in the new film was announced in 2022.
This continues Sweeney’s relationship with Sony, with the actress having starred late last year alongside Glen Powell in the studio’s rom-com Anyone but You before appearing with Dakota Johnson in this year’s superhero flick Madame Web.

A fun game those of legal drinking age can play while watching Roger Vadim's surreal/sexy 1968 Eurotrash space romp "Barbarella": take a drink every time Barbarella (Jane Fonda) changes costumes. One will be blindingly intoxicated by the 20-minute mark. "Barbarella" takes place in the distant future wherein the President of Earth (Claude Dauphin) has tasked the title heroine, a freelance space captain, to locate and retrieve Durand-Durand (Milo O'Shea) a scientist who has invented the positronic ray, a weapon of massive destructive power. Barbarella must trek through a picaresque adventure, stopping to be savaged by killer dolls, locked into an orgasm machine (!), and to befriend a friendly angel (John Philip Law). The film was based on the bawdy 1966 French comic by Jean-Claude Forest.

The Sydney Sweeney-led “Barbarella” film is taking shape, with Edgar Wright in talks to direct the picture for Sony. Jane Goldman and Honey Ross are in talks to pen the script.
Wright, best known for making the satiric zombie film “Shaun of the Dead,” is next set to direct Glen Powell in an adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Running Man.” Wright’s other directorial credits include “Last Night in Soho,” “Hot Fuzz,” “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” and “Baby Driver.”
The project also marks another step in Sweeney’s continued relationship with Sony Pictures — she’s most recently starred in “Anyone but You” and “Madame Web” for the studio. While “Madame Web” was largely panned by critics, Sweeney says her involvement in the film was a “strategic business decision” that’s since paid off.

Since its release 35 years ago today, River City Ransom has enjoyed a remarkable cultural turnaround. Today, it is typically described as one of the best Nes games ever and a turning point in the evolution of the beat-em-up genre.
For much of its existence, though, River City Ransom was often simply considered a cult classic. It was always a strange little game that not everyone immediately gelled with. Many critics and fans throughout the years have expressed mixed feelings towards the title. Others have been far more negative. Then again, the more mixed receptions to the game over the years really shouldn’t be too surprising.
At the time of its release (and for some time afterward) there was nothing quite like River City Ransom. At a glance, it looked just like Double-Dragon: the beat-em-up title that most obviously influenced River City Ransom’s development. Once you started playing the game,...

Back in 2023, Warner Bros. were gearing up for the release of one of the last movies to come out of the Dceu. The Flash, starring Ezra Miller in the lead, and directed by Andy Muschetti, had a lot hanging on its shoulders. The movie was supposed to be the vessel to reboot the Dceu to give way for James Gunn and Peter Safran’s Dcu.
A still from The Flash (2023)
Though fans weren’t sold on Ezra Miller’s involvement after their various scandals came to light, the reviews coming from the who’s who of Hollywood had them holding on to hope. From Tom Cruise to Stephen King, many celebrities came in defense of the movie, lauding it as one of the best superhero movies ever made. Unfortunately, the movie’s reception was not what anyone had hoped, and The Flash ended up being one ofe the worst features from Dceu.

A new animated TV series is in the works inspired by a video game featured in “Boy Kills World,” the upcoming martial arts action film starring Bill Skarsgård as a deaf boy trained to enact vengeance on those who murdered his family.
“Super Dragon Punch Force 3,” the real-life action-packed fighter video game that appears in the film (and will launch day-and-date with the U.S. and global release of “Boy Kills World” on April 26), has had its own animated series greenlit. Now in development, the show, which is set to dive into the universe of the game, will follow a highly-skilled yet dysfunctional team of misfits as they fight to defend their world from sentient robots, an ancient network of cultists and other intergalactic threats.

Glen Powell has already played a hit man, so why not star as a running man?
The “Hit Man” actor/writer and “Anyone But You” star has officially been cast in Edgar Wright’s “Running Man” remake, as announced at CinemaCon 2024. The feature will be released by Paramount.
Writer/director Wright previously announced that he was adapting Stephen King’s 1982 novel “The Running Man” (published under pseudonym Richard Bachman) for another big screen iteration in 2021. Deadline reported at the time that Wright will be teaming with his “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” screenwriter Michael Bacall to be as faithful to the source material as possible. The project was hinted at since 2017 with Wright tweeting that it’s the one film he would want to remake.

Glen Powell is lacing up his sneakers.
The “Top Gun: Maverick” star will lead the cast of Edgar Wright’s “The Running Man,” taking on a role played by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1987 cult favorite. The dystopian action film is based on a novel of the same name by horror maestro Stephen King, which he first published under a pseudonym, Richard Bachman.
Wright, best known for directing the satiric zombie film “Shaun of the Dead,” will also produce the picture along with Simon Kinberg and Nira Park. The filmmaker, whose work overflows with style and wit, most recently made the psychological horror film “Last Night in Soho.” His other credits include “Hot Fuzz,” “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” and “Baby Driver.”
Powell is on a hot streak lately and has found himself in demand by many studios who believe he has the kind of charisma that could make him a major star.

Documentary fans have a lot to be excited about this month on HBO and Max. April begins with the premiere of The Synanon Fix, a docuseries that follows the rise and fall of the cult-like drug rehabilitation program Synanon. The documentary Brandy Hellville and the Cult of Fast Fashion takes a deep-dive into the controversial “one size fits most” clothing brand Brandy Mellville and the impact of fast fashion on the planet.
An American Bombing: The Road to April 19th looks at the surge of political violence and anti-government sentiment that led to the 1995 Oklahoma City Bombing, and the effects still felt nearly 30 years later. HBO is also returning with a second part to their popular docuseries The Jinx, with filmmakers continuing their investigation of Robert Durst.

After collaborating on the crime drama TV series Fargo, Ewan McGregor and Mary Elizabeth Winstead extended their romantic relationship from the screen to real life. The couple joined the cast during season 3 of Noah Hawley’s series and played each other’s romantic interests. They first met on the set of the show in 2017.
Riley Stearns was Winstead’s ex-husband at the time, while McGregor was still married to Eve Mavrakis. The Fargo costars began dating shortly after their respective marriages ended. The Mercy Street actress may be a talented actress in her own right, but she could not resist the allure of her now-husband, Ewan McGregor.
Mary Elizabeth Winstead in Live Free or Die Hard
Before their first on-set meeting, Winstead admitted in a recent interview that she had a serious crush on their son’s father.

Before Mary Elizabeth Winstead played the roles of comic book-based Ramona Flowers and John McClane’s daughter, she starred as Lee Montgomery in Quentin Tarantino’s Death Proof. At the time, Winstead was making her mark in the horror slasher genre, even leading the ensemble cast of Final Destination 3. When she got the audition call for Death Proof, Winstead pulled off one little trick to get past the audition stage.

Winstead shared that she wore flip-flops to the audition to tap into the director’s alleged cinematic foot fetish. The Fargo actress managed to impress Tarantino with her take on Lee, rather than use her foot to get cast in the film.

Hollywood faces a significant imbalance when it comes to its stars. There are some actors like Adam Sandler who can’t separate the profession from real life and cast his friends and family as characters in movies. Then, there are others who vanish into a role for years, portraying their commitment to the art.
Actors like Dwayne Johnson and Adam Sandler often portray characters close to their real-life persona
While bringing their real-life persona into a character is not necessarily a bad thing, there are actors whom the audiences love for it and some whom they hate for the same. Here’s a look at actors who often portray characters close to their public image.

Brandon Routh and Mena Suvari will lead the cast of Grammy-winning director Joseph Kahn’s next film, “Ick.”
The film aims to evoke the timeless creature features of the 1980s with an ambitious arsenal of scares and comedy. Routh stars as Hank, a high school science teacher who still pines for his childhood sweetheart, played by Suvari. While discovering he may have a teenage daughter, portrayed by Malina Weissman (“Lemony Snicket’s Series of Unfortunate Events”), Hank must grapple with a terrifying alien anomaly (the titular “Ick”) invading their small town.
Interstellar Entertainment, co-founded by Udaya Sharma, D.C. Cassidy and Michael Fisk, is backing the project. The company is emerging as a powerhouse in the independent film space, currently in the midst of a $100 million fundraising effort.

Your scent. It's like a drug to me. You're like my own personal brand of heroin. Or perhaps it's just that Lionsgate simply refuses to let sleeping dogs (shape-shifters?) lie, even now that we're more than a decade removed from the peak of "Twilight" fever. The studio has already revealed its intention to reboot Stephenie Meyer's YA fantasy romance phenomenon for the small screen as a TV series, which begs the question: how exactly does it plan to go about trying to rebottle the "stupid lightning in a stupid bottle" that was the original movie adaptations of Meyer's books, to quote /Film's Bj Colangelo? We now have part of the answer and, incredibly enough, it's not at all a bad idea.

Founded by Maxwell Gaines in 1944, the Entertaining Comics brand (a.k.a. EC Comics) initially specialized in educational comics and stories aimed at children. But after Gaines died in a boating accident in ’47, his 25-year-old son William took control of the company and changed its direction, exploring the genres of horror, sci-fi, and satire while bringing us classic titles like Tales from the Crypt, The Vault of Horror, The Haunt of Fear, Weird Science, Weird Fantasy, and Mad. Sadly, EC Comics was at its peak when parents started to worry about the negative effects reading comic books could have on their children, leading to things like a Congressional hearing that blamed comic books for juvenile delinquency – a claim that was backed up by the book Seduction of the Innocent, written by psychiatrist Fredric Wertham. So by 1956, EC Comics ceased publishing all of their titles except for Mad. Those classic EC...

Founded by Max Gaines in 1944 and taken over by son William Gaines later that decade, EC Comics is one of the most legendary names in horror, known for their series’ Tales from the Crypt, The Vault of Horror, and The Haunt of Fear. Eighty years after the company came onto the scene, THR reports this afternoon that EC Comics is coming back from the dead.

In the early 1950s, EC Comics was the bad boy of comic publishers. Its comics such as Tales From the Crypt, Weird Science and Two-Fisted Tales sold millions in mid-century America. Unfortunately, its stories — at times shocking, horrifying, and even progressive — also drew scrutiny and backlash, and the company found itself in the cross hairs of censorship and regulation at the height of the McCarthy era. The company ultimately shuttered, with the last comic hitting newsstands and drug stores in 1956.
Now, seventy years after the creation of the self-regulatory body Comics Code Authority, the infamous comics company is blasting out of the crypt and returning with a brand new line of comics.

In addition to all of the Barbies and Kens who lived in Barbieland, there was also Allan, who happened to be Ken’s best friend, played by Michael Cera. Allan also had his moments, such as the scene where he battled the construction workers in Barbieland’s entrance. Curiously, though, Cera revealed that this was not the original concept for that particular fight scene.
Ben Affleck was supposed to make a cameo appearance in the movie and thus had to fight the construction workers, according to the 39-year-old Ontario-born actor. Unfortunately, the former couldn’t take on the role in Barbie due to his commitment to the biographical sports drama film Air.
This gave Cera’s Allan the opportunity to show off his fighting prowess. But had Affleck been available to play the role, the scene would have been drastically altered.

Michael Cera would be up for a Barbie spinoff focusing on his character, Allan.

Prime Video’s big February drop is Mr. & Mrs. Smith! No, not the 2005 Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie action movie, but a new TV series kinda based on it starring Donald Glover and Maya Erskine. The set up for the show version? Glover and Erskine are two strangers who both get jobs at a shady spy agency and are asked to get married so that they can pretend to be a couple undercover, but things get more complicated when they start falling in love for real. Uh oh!
If you’re in the mood for a movie or two this month, you can also check out the Prime debuts of Strays, Bottoms, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. In the meantime, here’s everything coming to Amazon Prime Video and Freevee this month. Amazon Originals are accompanied by an asterisk!

There’s nothing so freaky about “Freaky Tales,” Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck’s sci-fi omnibus ode to ‘80s cinema nostalgia that takes the definition of “derivative,” packages a bunch of retro cinematic references smugly into winky “you get it, right?” pastiche, and stretches it to its furthest possible event horizon.
The problem with structuring your film around four interlocking chapters, each with its own segueing title card, is if you’re not down with the first, you’ll be counting down the passage of time groaningly until the next. Last time they were behind the camera, Boden and Fleck had decamped their indie roots, including the lovely “Half Nelson” and “Sugar” — films powered by real characters — for the irresistible Faust’s bargain of directing 2019’s “Captain Marvel.” It seems they have not stripped themselves of the MCU’s cheeky, self-reflexive DNA, here writing and directing a film that thinks...

‘Succession’ Star Kieran Culkin Once Got Mad At A Fan For Taking His Pictures ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
Succession star Kieran Culkin is currently on cloud nine after bagging the Golden Globe, Critics Choice Award, and Emmy for his outstanding performance as Roman Roy. The actor has garnered immense fame for his character, and obviously, fans tend to get excited when they spot their favorite actor in public. They also, without realizing it, sometimes annoy the stars. Something similar happened with Kieran once, and he got a little furious at the fan.
The series started in 2018 and ran for four seasons. The actor started his career with Home Alone alongside his brother Macaulay Culkin. Kieran appeared in films like Music of the Heart, Scott Pilgrim vs the World, and Igby Goes Down. But he became a household name for his role in the HBO series, which has got him some of the prestigious awards as well.

[This story contains spoilers for Ahsoka and Scott Pilgrim Takes Off.]
Due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, Mary Elizabeth Winstead had to let two exciting projects in Ahsoka and Scott Pilgrim Takes Off speak for themselves, but now she’s finally looking back on her rather significant 2023.
In early 2022, Winstead officially joined the Star Wars galaxy in order to bring the beloved animated character of General Hera Syndulla to live-action for the first time. When the offer originally came in from Ahsoka creator Dave Filoni, it allowed Winstead the opportunity to reunite with Rosario Dawson 16 years after they last shared the screen in Quentin Tarantino’s Death Proof. It also presented her the chance to join the storied franchise that she already had a great deal of familiarity with, as her life partner, Ewan McGregor, has been playing Obi-Wan Kenobi since the late ‘90s and had just wrapped his own eponymously titled Star Wars Disney+ series.
