Christian Bale’s reputation as a method actor precedes him. He’s the kind of actor who doesn’t shy away from diving into the grittiest, most challenging aspects of his roles. Whether it’s consuming maggots and pig offal or enduring intense physical transformations, Bale’s dedication knows no bounds. However, when it comes to firearms, Bale draws a firm line.

A Story of Floating Weeds / Floating Weeds: Two Films by Yasujiro Ozu on Blu-ray released to the Criterion Collection on May 7th, 2024.
This marked only my third and forth film by Yasujiro Ozu. I already owned the Criterion Collection releases of Tokyo Story and Good Morning, both of which I thoroughly enjoyed, with Good Morning instantly becoming one of my favorite experiences with Japanese cinema. Part of what makes the Criterion Collection so great is the way it makes important films easily accessible for collectors.
A Story of Floating Weeds / Floating Weeds: Two Films by Yasujiro Ozu Plot
An actor traveling with a theater group set up shop in a small village where he reconnects with an old lover and his estranged son. Emotions boil over as the former lovers rekindle their romantic flame.

Floating Weeds
It’s always interesting when a filmmaker remakes one of their own films.

"What was it all for...?" Well Go USA has revealed a new trailer for another intense war movie titled Before Dawn, an Australian production made by Australian filmmaker Jordon Prince-Wright. Not to be confused with Werner Herzog's classic Rescue Dawn (the story of Dieter Dengler). After first opening Down Under in April, this hits VOD in the US in July. Before Dawn is the journey of fictional Western Australia outback kid Jim Collins and his battalion on the Western Front during World War I. He joins up eager to fight, only to discover the brutal realities of trench warfare. Of course. Starring Levi Miller (from A Wrinkle in Time) as Jim, with Travis Jeffery, Myles Pollard, Tim Franklin, Jordan Dulieu, introducing Peter Sullivan, with Ed Oxenbould & Stephen Peacocke. How many of these "war is hell" movies do they need to make? This is really All Quiet on the Western Front or 1917 all over again,...

Being one of Hollywood’s finest, English actor Christian Bale has starred in a myriad of films throughout his envious career. Collaborating with A-list actors and acclaimed filmmakers, Bale has had a truly fulfilling experience while shooting his projects. But among all of his movies, there’s this one $31M film that the actor had the most fun shooting.
Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne
While most of Christian Bale’s fans might consider the actor having the time of his life on the set of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, Bale actually had a phenomenal experience while shooting Werner Herzog’s Rescue Dawn (2006). Although the actor was initially scared of losing his life, Bale later revealed, that was the very essence that made him feel great.

In Jon Favreau's 2008 film "Iron Man," the title hero (Robert Downey Jr.) was assisted in his high-tech superhero lab by an artificially intelligent butler-like presence named J.A.R.V.I.S. Iron Man's digital butler not only wrangled the hero's complicated engineering projects, but also controlled the even-higher-tech devices in his lab. When Iron Man went out on patrol, J.A.R.V.I.S.'s voice could be heard inside his helmet. J.A.R.V.I.S. was voiced by Paul Bettany. As the Marvel Cinematic Universe continued to grow, so too did Iron Man's computerized friend. Eventually, J.A.R.V.I.S. was shunted into an indestructible android body and renamed Vision (also Bettany).
When Vision became sentient and autonomous, that meant Tony Stark had to program a new computer helper, and invented F.R.I.D.A.Y. (voiced by Kerry Condon...

Celebrated director (and sometime actor) Werner Herzog and his longtime cinematographer Peter Zeitlinger will be bestowed with the Cinematographer-Director Duo Award at this year’s 31st EnergaCamerimage festival this fall in Toruń, Poland, a European celebration of the best-of-the-best cinematographers around the world. The honor will also include a retrospective of their work which will include narrative features as well as documentaries.
Herzog and Zeitlinger first collaborated on the 1995 German film “Gesualdo: Death for Five Voices” and have teamed up for many of the former’s most notable films, including “Grizzly Man,” “Rescue Dawn,” “Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans” and “Into the Abyss.” It is expected a number of these films will be shown alongside the soon-to-be-announced competition films at Camerimage.

Before we get into the 10 greatest prison movies of all time, there are some honourable movies to mention. This list does not include classics like The Great Escape, Unbroken, and Rescue Dawn. Matt Damon is no stranger to turning down potentially lucrative film opportunities. But him rejecting Rescue Dawn was a special case, as he did so after seeking advice from his mother.
Matt Damon’s mom predicted her son’s acting career years ago Matt Damon | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
Damon has been very open about his upbringing. Unlike some celebrities who were born into the business, Damon couldn’t have been raised further from Hollywood’s spotlight while growing up. He wasn’t exactly wealthy, but didn’t consider his family to be poor either.
“I was a middle-class kid and, relative to the rest of the world, that’s great wealth. As a parent, I think the question is, how do you raise any kid with a true understanding and context of what kind of life they have versus what kind of life other people have? It’s a constant...

As befitting its status as one of the world’s biggest companies, every now and then Amazon likes to take a big swing with its Prime Video originals. With its list of new releases for April 2023, the streamer is taking one of its biggest swings yet.
Though it’s not quite as vast or expensive as fellow Prime Video series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Citadel (premiering April 28) is a massive, massive undertaking. Starring Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, this spy series is described as “an expansive and groundbreaking global event comprising a mothership series and several local language satellite series.” This means that the Russo Brothers-produced project will eventually feature several spinoffs in multiple countries and languages around the world. Neat-o!

The jury system can by trying, but “Jury Duty” — a doc-style comedy series coming to Freevee on April 7 — examines it through the eyes of one juror. The catch: The actual juror, Ronald Gladden, doesn’t realize the case is fake and everyone else is an actor. All the crazy machinations inside the courtroom are planned, and everyone is in on it, except for Gladden. Will this lone juror be able to find his way to justice despite all of the chaos surrounding the case?

Starting from his first acting gig, as a car salesman in the feature “Our Town”, which he also scripted, Mo Hong-jin has shown time and time again his affinity for the thriller genre. Even though it has been one of the most popular genre in his home country, it would take him nine years until the first day of shooting began for “Missing You”. Besides offering the kind of entertainment that goes along with this kind of movie, as a writer he was interested in what turns a person into a “monster”, as Mo explains in interviews about his feature. Especially with regards to the character of Hee-jo, played by actress Shim Eun-kyung, he wanted to know whether she decided to go the same path as the killer she had been following or if she would remain human and a “girl”.

With its list of new releases for September 2022, Prime Video is finally unveiling the most anticipated (and expensive) series in the streamer’s history.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will arrive to Prime Video’s servers on Sept. 2, 2022. This Lord of the Rings prequel, set in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Second Age, is in many ways the kind of TV property that Prime Video must have always wanted. It’s certainly the TV property most fitting with the company’s largesse and riches. The Rings of Power will cover the creation of the titular rings and many important events from Tolkien’s lore (condensed into a more TV-appropriate timeframe).
Middle-earth is going to be the happening spot on Amazon and the streaming world at large this month, but Prime Video does have a handful of other originals for the fantasy-phobic. Flight/Risk, a documentary about the Boeing 737 Max design disasters,...

When Rotten Tomatoes interviewed filmmaker Werner Herzog on his 2006 film "Rescue Dawn" -- a fictional remake of his documentary "Little Dieter Needs to Fly" -- interviewer Rich Cline asked how lead actor Christian Bale was suited to playing his role. Herzog's answer was blunt and frank: "He's the best of his generation."
Bale had been acting since he was a boy, having broken out at the age of 13 in Steven Spielberg's 1987 film "Empire of the Sun." He appeared in several '90s slumber party staples -- "Newsies," "Swing Kids," "Little Women," "Velvet Goldmine" -- as well as a pile of notable horror and genre films...

Werner Herzog's 2006 survival film "Rescue Dawn" was the Hollywood version of his own 1997 documentary film "Little Dieter Needs to Fly." Both films tell the story of Dieter Dengler, a German pilot who was shot down during the Vietnam War, captured and imprisoned (and starved and tortured), only to eventually escape. In the documentary film, Herzog brought Dengler back to the very Laotian and Thai jungles where he was held captive in order to retrace his steps. "Rescue Dawn," in which Christian Bale played Dengler, shot in jungles as well (this time in Taiwan), and large portions of the film are devoted to Bale and...

Romance has long been a socially accepted way to cope with the precarity of life and the prospect of death. Crackling chemistry has a way of helping us project ourselves into a future unknown, while fuzzy warm memories stave off the inevitability of our own demise. Miroslav Mandić’s tender-hearted “Sanremo” places us squarely in a place where such leaps, both backward and forward, are all but impossible: a nursing home. Specifically, one where two of its inhabitants suffer from dementia, making their every interaction an opportunity to rekindle the romance neither can remember having embarked on.
Bruno (Sandi Pavlin) spends his days worrying about his dog. He’s always eager to leave the nursing home behind and return to the house he kept for years with his wife to feed his beloved canine companion. He’s gently reminded that his home is no longer his. Or rather, that his...

The Soviets are leaving, but the country is staying with them. In the same way that Apocalypse Now is about a trip on a boat, Battle For Afghanistan is framed by efforts to recover a downed pilot. Ostensibly based on a true story, it is as hard to judge what is fictive and what is realistic in the same way that it is hard to judge the differences between Rescue Dawn and Little Dieter Wants To Fly.
It is no less good for that uncertainty. Indeed, in and among some gripping action sequences there are questions asked about war and its conduct, and those who conduct it. It extends to the title. Battle For Afghanistan, Leaving Afghanistan, and also Brotherhood. There's also three writing credits, father and son Pavel and Aleksandr Lungin, and then the author of the memoirs upon which this is based. Nikolay Dmitrievich Kovalyov did spend time in.

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.
And today we talk to the great Steve Zahn, currently starring in the impressive indie Cowboys. Conor and I were lucky enough to speak with Zahn about his eclectic career, including highlights such as Safe Men, Riding in Cars with Boys, and A Perfect Getaway.
We discuss the immense variety in his resume, from Reality Bites to Rescue Dawn, the slightly infamous legacy of Sundance fave Happy, Texas, the way he approaches each role, and a little-seen film called Blowin’ Smoke (Freak Talks About Sex).
Cowboys is currently available digitally.

Let the Steve Zahnaissance commence. Whether it’s Saving Silverman, A Perfect Getaway, That Thing You Do!, You’ve Got Mail, Rescue Dawn, or even War for the Planet of the Apes, Steve Zahn’s appearance on the big screen is always a welcome one. His next role, in Anna Kerrigan’s modern-day western Cowboys, is one of his most acclaimed.
Premiering at Tribeca Film Festival last year, where Zahn picked up Best Actor and Kerrigan won Best Screenplay, the film follows the actor as a troubled but well-intentioned father who has recently separated from his wife Sally (Jillian Bell). When his wife refuses to let their trans son Joe (Sasha Knight) live as his authentic self, Troy runs off with Joe into the Montana wilderness. Ahead of a release next month on February 12, the first trailer and poster have arrived.
Watch the trailer below.
Cowboys arrives on February 12 in Virtual Cinemas and VOD.

Director Greg Barker doesn’t quite have the track record or the mystique of Werner Herzog, but he enters Herzogian territory with “Sergio,” his drama about United Nations diplomat Sergio Vieira de Mello that premieres on Netflix on Friday.
Barker’s new “Sergio,” which stars “Narcos” star Wagner Moura as the celebrated Brazilian who worked for peace around the world for more than 30 years, is the second “Sergio” that the director has made, the first being his 2009 documentary. That puts Barker in the company of a small group of directors who’ve made a documentary about a subject, and then later adapted the same story into a narrative feature – among them Herzog with his 1997 documentary “Little Dieter Needs to Fly,” about Vietnam War Pow Dieter Dengler, and his 2006 feature “Rescue Dawn, which starred Christian Bale as Dengler; Dan Krauss with the 2013 doc and 2019 narrative features “The Kill Team”; and Fenton Bailey...

The Best Actor Oscar race this year just might turn into the battle of the bulge, pitting a pot-bellied Dick Cheney against a chowhound Italian bodyguard going belly to belly.
In this corner, after packing on about 40 pounds for his role as President George W. Bush’s controversial ex-veep in “Vice,” due in theaters on Christmas day, is Christian Bale, 43. The Welsh actor, who dropped 30 pounds and won a supporting Academy Award for his rail-thin crack-addict boxer Dicky Eklund in 2010’s “The Fighter,” holds the unofficial title of Hollywood’s most dedicated yo-yo dieter.
Bale transformed into musclebound alpha-male sicko Patrick Bateman in 2000’s “American Psycho.” Then he dropped an alarming 60 pounds for his mad insomniac factory worker in 2004’s “The Machinist.” He next put on 30 pounds of muscle to fill out the Caped Crusader’s rubber suit starting with 2005’s “Batman Begins.” The actor then lost 55 pounds as a prisoner-of-war for 2006’s “Rescue Dawn.

Given the right role, it’s distinctly possible that there’s nobody better in the business than Christian Bale. He can just own the screen and dominate a film. There’s a reason why he’s an Academy Award winner and slowly becoming someone that voters seem to look for a reason to cite. Oscar aside, he’s simply a throwback method style actor and that’s compelling for audience members. This week, he co-stars in The Promise, while also being rumored as the choice of filmmaker Adam McKay to play Dick Cheney in a biopic set for 2018. Even as a big time A-lister, the sky remains the limit for Bale. The film is a period piece, centered on a love triangle during the final days of the Ottoman Empire. Michael (Oscar Isaac), a rather brilliant medical student, is wooing the beautiful and highly sophisticated Ana (Charlotte Le Bon), but...

Nicole Kidman and director Werner Herzog bring to life the true story of a trailblazing woman who found freedom in the Middle East. Gertrude Bell (Kidman) leaves behind her buttoned-up life in England for Tehran. Her excursion across the post-World War I Middle East takes her from finding love with a British officer (James Franco), and an encounter with the legendary T.E. Lawrence (Robert Pattinson) – the character that inspired the film Lawrence Of Arabia. While that previous cinematic classic that will come to mind several times while watching this one, the nostalgia doesn’t help matters across this long desert trip.
Nicole Kidman lends the famous traveler, writer, and cartographer just the right amount of spitfire and gumption, especially towards the beginning of the film – she looks towards the heavens and wishes for an earthquake to take her away from a lavish party that she doesn’t want to be attending.

Today's magic number is 31. Can you believe it took Christian Bale 31 movies to win Oscar's love?
He debuted in the Steven Spielberg film Empire of the Sun (1987) which was nominated for six Oscars so they knew of him straight from the get-go. But nothing seemed to do it -- not literary adaptations (Little Women, The Portrait of a Lady), neither relationship dramas (Metroland, Laurel Canyon), nor glam rock epics (Velvet Goldmine). Of course it didn't happen for superheroes or serial killers (Batman, American Psycho) but even war dramas (Empire of the Sun, Rescue Dawn) didn't do it. And then suddenly The Fighter (2010) did. He crushed his competition on the way to a win.
Sometimes not being nominated but being routinely excellent is a good way to build crazy momentum for a win. Which working actor do you think is heading straight to an Oscar win as soon as they're finally nominated?...

Ever seen Werner Herzog’s “Little Dieter Needs To Fly”? No? How about Werner Herzog’s “Rescue Dawn”? Still probably no, but a less likely “no,” because that film starred Christian Bale during that sweet spot of his career where he’d just made his debut as Batman and elevated his status in the doing. Neither film resonated much with a wider American audience, probably because nobody knew who Dieter Dengler was and they didn’t care to, which doesn’t speak well to the chances of David Schisgall’s new picture, “Theo Who Lived,” a documentary about Theo Padnos, aka Peter Theo Curtis, aka “that guy who got kidnapped by members of Jabhat al-Nusra in 2012.” His story is of the moment, but the moment happens to be ignorant of worldly affairs.

6 More Filmmaking Tips From Werner Herzog
If there’s anyone who deserves a second Filmmaking Tips column, it’s Werner Herzog. It’s been almost four years since we posted the first list of his advice to fellow soldiers of cinema, and there’s just so much more to learn from the legend. He actually has his own Rogue Film School, where he directly imparts his wisdom to students during weekend seminars. He also leads a new online course at MasterClass, which began this week, where he talks about all facets of fiction and nonfiction filmmaking in a six-hour video course. He does many interviews (this week he participated in a Reddit Ama) and shares his philosophies and strategies often. Not even two of these columns properly sums it all up.
So, as is often the case, this is just an introduction to some essential tips from a unique artist and craftsman. Herzog...

Werner Herzog’s latest documentary “Lo and Behold, Reveries of the Connected World” chronicles the virtual world from its unlikely origins to its outermost reaches, examining the modern, malleable digital landscape with a curious, keen eye. Aided by his indelible voiceover, Herzog speaks with such tech visionaries as Bob Kahn, Elon Musk, and Sebastian Thrun to explore how the virtual has completely changed the physical, and the ways in which our lives are forever altered by our connection to the Internet. Herzog probes the philosophical questions that lie not so far beneath the surface and takes a harsh look at the benefits and pitfalls of our new world. See some exclusive posters from the film below.

• see if the Pinkett-Smiths had any reason to be upset about the lack of Oscar interest in Concussion (hint: no)
• stab your eyes out while watching Daddy's Home
• find out if The Hateful Eight is Tarantino's worst (hint: yes)
• discover the stuff they left out of Pt 1 in order to make another billion with Hunger Games: Mockingjay Pt 2
• watch Juliet Stevenson be Mother Teresa in The Letters
• endure yet another Paranormal Activity movie because they will never stop making those
• use Point Break (2015) discs for coasters because who needs a remake when Point Break (1991) is still such a knockout?!

We have the highlights of what's coming and going from HBO Now and HBO Go in January 2020.
A new year will eventually mean a new HBO with the release of HBO Max. But for now HBO Now and HBO Go continue on and are putting their best foot forward with the HBO new releases for January 2020.
Comedy is the name of the game for the HBO originals in January 2020. Larry David returns as Curb Your Enthusiasm season 10 premieres on January 19. Veep creator Armando Iannucci takes his satirical ways to space with Avenue 5 the same night. The New Pope is...sort of a comedy and arrives on January 13. The Stephen King series The Outsider is very much not a comedy but it will come to HBO on January 12 all the same.
The list of movies coming to HBO in January 2020 are surprisingly action-packed as well. John Wick...

Queen Of The Desert Trailer. Werner Herzog‘s Queen of the Desert (2015) movie trailer stars Nicole Kidman, Robert Pattinson, James Franco, and Damian Lewis. Queen of the Desert‘s plot synopsis: “A chronicle of Gertrude Bell’s life, a traveler, writer, archaeologist, explorer, cartographer, and political attaché for the British Empire at the dawn of the twentieth century.”
The movie trailer for Werner Herzog’s new film is out, and it feels terribly flat to me. I’m a humongous Herzog fan. His documentaries and general style of verite that he infuses into even his fictional feature films is something I love about his work. He blurs that line between real life and dream-weaving better than anyone else, really. Though sometimes, he can get lost in atmosphere and nuance, forgetting that a through-line and structure is there for a reason.
The last fiction feature of Herzog’s I saw was Rescue Dawn,...

Disney•Pixar’s upcoming movie The Good Dinosaur revealed its roster of voice talent today.
“We were lucky to work with a number of incredible pros along the way and our story ultimately led us to this amazing and talented group,” said the first-time-feature-film director Peter Sohn. “We’re all taking this journey with Arlo, and it’s been a privilege to see these performers bring our characters to life.”
Raymond Ochoa (NBC’s “The Night Shift,” TNT’s “Rizzoli & Isles,” “Disney’s A Christmas Carol”) provides the voice of an Apatosaurus named Arlo. Jeffrey Wright (“The Hunger Games: Mockingjay” – parts I & II, HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire”) was tapped as the voice of Poppa, Arlo’s father. Steve Zahn (“Captain Fantastic,” “Ridiculous Six,” “Rescue Dawn,” “Mad Dogs”) provides the voice of a pterodactyl named Thunderclap. Aj Buckley (TNT’s “Murder in the First,” FX’s “Justified”) voices a T-Rex called Nash.

From the Berlin International Film Festival, Adam Cook and Daniel Kasman continue our series of festival dialogues. Terrence Malick's Knight of Cups had its world premiere in the Berlinale's Competition.
Daniel Kasman: I must admit it's a bit difficult to begin speaking of this overwhelming film so immediately after seeing it, and especially in the atmosphere here in Berlin of almost immediate derision. I remember the boos that instantly followed the final shot of The Tree of Life's in Cannes and here I'd swear I felt that negative energy going into the giant Berlinale Palast, the anticipation of yet more Malick. Whatever that means. Few still describe well his method as a filmmaker, and whatever you may think of his last film, To the Wonder, it certainly revealed more about how Terrence Malick, a very unique filmmaker, thinks about cinema as a language, and how his cinema "works"—moves,...
