A Bit Voyeuristic
Hitchcoc10 December 2019
When Susan Oliver's character is brought to jail by the state police, Barney and Andy begin to drool over her. She is obviously used to the attention and bides her time, waiting for an escape opportunity. I guess by modern standards this would be quite offensive to women. These two guys are easy marks and shouldn't be. Barney, of course, is in a class by himself, but Andy should know better. Anyway, she was a beautiful woman (who died tragically) and it's easy to see how distracting she could be.

Beauty is Skin Deep

Warning: Spoilers
Please add this to another review that mentions Susan Oliver's magnetic appeal. She is also very good in the role of a repeated felon, who manages to trick Barney (really??) and almost gets a passionate kiss with Andy.

That said, its a good episode all around; well written, but without the usual laughs. More a "dramedy".

Quite different

Warning: Spoilers
I guess everyone is correct that says this episode is unsettling or creepy, what with the two jailers and the very beautiful prisoner. It's expected that Barney goes silly for her but Andy is not supposed to be anything other than a solid, unwavering lawman. Instead, Andy gets completely hooked on her. He almost gets some loving too. If this had somehow been an hour episode, we would surely have seen Andy throwing rocks at Helen as he ran her out of town. But anyway, we are glad to see Andy isn't blind or gay. After seeing him flinch from Ellen the manicurist, (whoa), both county nurses and Thelma Lou's whole house full of friends (Farmer Takes A Wife), we were suspicious.

It turns out, even a hateful frigid, she-devil has a man that wants her.

Yet another wonderful Mayberry tale!! Susan Oliver is fabulous!!
michael_shell13 August 2006
One of many excellent stories from Mayberry, this one presents a young and beautiful Susan Oliver as a prisoner. Warm and well-plotted and we get to see some of Don Knotts' amazingly hilarious body-language as he gussies himself up to impress the prisoner. Also a short, side-splitting moment with Otis as he tries to get into his cell makes this episode a fun and warm and memorable one!! Susan Oliver naturally makes a play for Andy, who seems quite smitten with her (who wouldn't be?), but in the end, it's good old Barney Fife that falls for her and unlocks her cell to fix a radio inside. Andy shows up just as Susan is exiting the jail in an attempted jail-break.

High marks!

I thought this was a very touching plot and very poignant. Everything is told through subtle gestures and facial expressions Examples: When Andy peers over the newspaper to take a peek at her and the one tender moment between Andy and the woman. Andy quickly recovers himself before it is too late. I think the music is romantic and perfect for setting the mood.

The only thing that bothered me about this episode was that Barney seems to have forgotten all about Thelma Lou!

Andy Griffith was a phenomenal actor with a Midas touch! Susan Oliver is lovely--and was a great actress, too. Thumbs up for this episode!

I loved it!!

This one of my favorite episodes I think Andy Griffith was so handsome and in this episode he is clearly attracted to "The Prisoner" played by the gorgeous Susan Oliver. It's not what you usually see with Andy this shows a passionate chemistry! He really struggles with his feelings and leaves but returns to catch her trying to escape. I still can't help but wonder what would of happened if Barney never came back.

One of my favorites.

Susan Oliver is fantastic. This is another episode that makes TAGS unique, not only does TAGS show comedy at its best but the real life experiences.

A broad departure from the rest of the series...
alhoui2 July 2022
This is one of my top ten AGS episodes. Susan Oliver is fantastic as the sultry nameless, overnight prisoner, who brings out Andy's vulnerability. At times it's hard to tell if Susan is being sincere or just a con artist. I suspect it is a bit of both. She appears to be somewhat taken aback by Andy's kind, unselfish nature. In this broad departure from the rest of the series, the sexual tension between Andy and Susan is thick enough to cut with a knife. It also has its hilarious moments too, with Barney falling all over himself to impress Susan. Highly recommended viewing!

All guys can relate to this episode in some way
vitoscotti15 May 2022
A very special TAGS episode. There have been many beautiful women on TAGS. None more beautiful than Susan Oliver. Brilliant casting of her. Then, an unforgettable performance as the prisoner.

We get to see sides of Barney & Andy rarely seen. Each with a "take care of #1" animalistic side only this episode shows. I wondered how could Andy explain coming back to Barney, who did the same thing. Both guys lost their heads, and are lucky the prisoner didn't get a gun with their head in the clouds state. Probably the weakest we'll see Andy in the series.

One of the best Otis scenes.of the series. Fast paced, hectic, and funny. Most other Otis scenes are slower, because he's so drunk, or hungover.

Very racy for a 60s sitcom. But, all done in good taste. The fact a matron was never called for a female prisoner is very creepy.

An outstanding, revealing epilogue. Both guys realize how foolish they were, and lucky she didn't escape, or get her hands on a weapon.

Where's Helen?
georgechambless28 October 2020
Andy and Barney were understandably smitten by the lovely Susan Oliver, who wouldn't be? The only thing that bothered me was how they could forget about Helen and Thelma Lou. Come on, fellas! Still, it's another great episode when TAGS was it it's prime. Mighty good!

Andy and Barney fall for female prisoner
santos4022 March 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Of the B&W episodes this is my least favorite and is actually my least favorite of the entire series due to the fact that the whole episode is very out of character for the show. Barney is looking for to a George Raft movie with Thelma Lou so Andy agrees to stay with a prisoner the State police bring in. The prisoner turns out to be a very attractive and charming female. They wind up in a minor argument over who will do guard duty with Andy winning out. Andy is completely charmed by the prisoner (out of character). He has dealt with beautiful women in the past so this made no sense to me. Later Barney returns and Andy feels he needs a break so goes home for a bit. After being home awhile and smelling her perfume on his shirt, he returns to the courthouse to find the prisoner in the process of escaping and Barney clueless as always..Barney remains true to character but the rest of the show had a very bizarre and off feel to it.

They Shouldn't Have Started Experimenting
parkerr8630226 March 2020
This episode is not a typical TAGS outing, and it is pretty obvious the producers were experimenting, to see if the show might work with more adult content. A blonde sexpot (Susan Oliver) is lodged in the Mayberry jail overnight, and both Andy and Barney drool over her.

First, would decent men (to say nothing of law officers) instantly feel this way toward an arrested criminal? Second, Andy and Barney are clearly turned on sexually by her while the camera fawns over her anatomy. No one wanted to see the beloved Andy and Barney like this.

One of the weakest episodes of the show; the experiment was unsuccessful, and TAGS returned to its regular formula after that.

Uncomfortable to watch.
mchenrykrm31 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Considering the time this was made and with all of the more recent revelations of the Me Too movement this episode is a bit disconcerting.

I have to wonder if in some way this was an opportunity for Andy Griffith to break away from the Andy Taylor character.

Griffith had always desired to be a leading man in movies and in this episode we see some of this as he connects with the lovely prisoner. The premise is a bad one. A woman alone in a jail with a single jailer who is about to kiss her before being interrupted by Barney breaks all the rules.

The sight of Andy and Barney watching her silhouette is creepy and the two arguing about who gets to stay the night to guard her is disturbing.

The Andy Taylor character would have had Helen, Aunt Bee or some other female come spend the night to watch over the woman. A jail romance between jailer and prisoner breaks protocol then and now.
