- Following the death of a local politician, Brian Quigley begins campaigning for the vacant position and along the way digs up some startling material.
- When the local TP (Irish republican MP) and national figure is buried, father MacAnally convinces devout Brian Quigley to stand against his party's succession-candidate, Sean Dooley, who still meddles with Brian's campaign-timed donation for the people-ignored church restoration fund. Donal Doherty meanwhile dug up some bones on Quigley's building site which may be human.—KGF Vissers
- When the local member of Parliament dies, Brian Quigley decides to throw his hat into the ring. He also decides the play the game at least as thoroughly as his opponent, Sean Dooley, an known opponent of the Church and a long-time thorn in Quigley and Father MacAnnaly's sides. When Father Clifford doesn't have much luck raising funds to replace the church bell, Quigley offers to pay for it all. This of course doesn't sit well with Niamh Quigley whose marriage to Ambrose is on hold since her father claims he can't afford it at the moment. A reporter, Leo McGarvey, turns up to cover the by-election and obviously has something altogether different in mind: to win back the heart of his university sweetheart, Assumpta. Brian may be facing other problems when the workers at his holiday site dig up what appear to be human bones and McGarvey senses that he's hiding something.—garykmcd
- This episode contains metaphors of the Eucharist and church life such as "treat her as a friend" (Jesus refers to his followers as friends), "last orders", "that drink we invented during finals - the Terminator". Characters tell others they are "fine" when in fact they clearly could use a little help. There is competition between Quigley and Dooley for a place on the council, in which one candidate votes for the opposition. This theme is similar to the scene in a previous episode where Peter throws a game of football for a good cause. The spirit of the law versus the letter of the law. Again both sides have a valid point, have something to bring to the discussion which is worthy of respect. This is an ongoing theme of the Ballykissangel series.
