- John Carter returns to the Congo to retrieve Luka Kovac's body. He finds however that the area where was killed is still too dangerous to enter. He and Gillian finally manage to hitch a ride with a Red Cross worker, Debbie, who is going to the area. In flashbacks, we learn how Kovac and his fellow aid workers were taken prisoner by rebel troops. They are shot, one at a time, until only Luka is left. Amid the destruction of the eastern Congo, we learn his fate. Carter also makes a fateful decision.—garykmcd
- On the plane to Kishasa, to retrieve Luka's corpse, Carter meets an embassy employee, who first points him to helpless US (as Kovac is Croatian) and international authorities, then informally inspires waving $20,000 cash around the completely corrupt country. Flashbacks show how Luka got sick, leaving his quinine for a kid, and captured, staying too long. A Red Cross official suggests the road back to Kisangani, where they find the hospital torched by the ignorant MaiMai militia. A crucifix a patient gave the lapsed Catholic helps finding out what happened: he was spared, being mistaken for a priest, hence under God's relevant protection.—KGF Vissers
