- When Ally witnesses Frank, stealing food from the supermarket, she starts avoiding him.
- Frank's heated argument with a supermarket manager frightens Ally so much that she becomes afraid of her grandpa. Frank realizes he needs to talk to her, but he's reluctant to do so because he's never had a real conversation with her and he doesn't know what to say. Jimmy: Jeff Garlin. Ally: Madylin Sweeten. Frank: Peter Boyle. Debra: Patricia Heaton.
- Ray goes grocery shopping at the supermarket and Frank and Ally (Madylin Sweeten) are with him. Ally sees Frank "sample" some food at the store (even though the sign right above the trail mix said "No Sampling"). When he gets caught, he argues with a worker Jimmy (Jeff Garlin) who asks Frank not to take any food without paying for it and calls Frank a thief. Frank argues and throws a quarter at the worker, before Ray pulls Frank away. Ally witnesses the entire confrontation.
Ally then gets scared and refuses to talk to Frank. Debra finds out that Ally saw Frank yelling at a worker after trying to steal food. Debra wants Frank to behave himself in public. Debra nudges Ray who has to talk to Frank. Debra says that Frank should learn to set an example in front of the kids. Ray tells Frank that Ally is upset after seeing Frank's behavior at the supermarket. Frank defends his behavior and so does Marie (she says that sampling the trail mix is not stealing). Robert says technically it is stealing to sample the trail mix without paying.
Debra also tells off Frank for making a scene and yelling at a worker when he was in the wrong. Marie says that the store used to let the customers sample the trail mix all the time, and used to help the customers carry their bags to their car. Robert says that Frank's yelling and making a public scene can affect Ally negatively. Frank refuses to back down and is happy that Ally saw what he did to the worker, as he believes Ally should learn not to take nonsense from anybody. Debra calls Frank a public menace.
Marie blames Ray for not controlling the situation before it got out of hand. She says that his job was to be with Frank all the time when he is around people. Marie says that Ray should have had a snack bar in his pocket to feed Frank at regular intervals. Debra says Marie is an enabler of this behavior from Frank (by rewarding Frank's horrible public behavior with Italian food) and decides to stand up to him.
Frank gets it when Ally is scared of him and refuses to talk to him. Debra says that neither Ray or she said anything to Ally, and Ally has some very strong feelings about seeing Frank that way at the supermarket. Frank believes that Ray and Debra turned Ally against her grandfather and storms out. Frank has a one-on-one conversation with Ally to sort out the issue. Frank tries to explain his side of the story. Ally insists that the sign said, "no sampling". Frank again tries to defend his behavior at the store. Frank says that the sign is wrong, and that people should be allowed to sample the trail mix before they want to buy it. Ally is upset that Frank yelled at Jimmy and that scared her. Ally says that if someone yells at somebody, then they should go back and apologize to them.
On Ally's suggestion, Frank goes back to the store to apologize. But this time the worker is a jerk and won't accept Frank's apology and still accuses him of stealing. Frank holds back as Ally is with him. Ally takes Frank back home.
