Chalk outlines were never used by any police force as they would contaminate the crime scene. Meticulous photographs are used instead to document the scene. But in an episode just a few weeks before this, Daphne is seen ironing Frasier socks as explains that Frasier makes her iron his socks and fold them, so they can stored in his "sock cubby". It's obvious that the socks were knotted for this episode so Eddie could find a whole pair.
