- Bill Slocum is accused by Duke Wilson of rustling. They take him in Wichita with plans to lynch him outside town but Earp stops them. Slocum is put on trial while Earp does some investigation which produces a major surprise for the jury.
- While riding the range Shorty Beckett spots Bill Slocum with a cow wearing the DUKE brand tied down and Slocum with a fire. The implication is that Slocum is using a running iron to change the brand. Rustling is a major problem in the area. Shorty reports it to Duke Wilson and his foreman. Duke decides they will grab Slocum after a meeting of the Cattlemen's Association in Wichita and take him outside town to lynch him. It also means prime bottom land owned by Slocum will become available. Murdock sees them take Slocum so he warns Earp who interrupts the lynching and takes Slocum into custody. He convinces Slocum to stand trial but has to stand down a lynch mob led by Wilson who has told people Earp will release Slocum. The trial starts with Earp in the unusual position of defense counsel but he is late. He arrives in mid-trial with two unusual witnesses. A cow with Slocum's Bar D brand and her nursing calf. The calf is wearing the DUKE brand which is relatively easy to create from the Bar D brand. Suddenly Wilson and his foreman are on the hot seat instead of Slocum as they appear to be the real rustlers.—Anonymous
- An apparent cattle rustler is spotted changing the brand on a cow by a wealthy rancher, who decides to blame the deed on a smaller rancher, who owns a piece of land coveted by the bigger rancher.
To avoid Wyatt Earp's inference, the rancher convinces friends to kidnap the small rancher, from Wichita, and take him into the countryside to lynch him. Earp is tipped off about the kidnapping and rescues the rancher from the lynch mob. The smaller rancher is put on trial on rustling charges while Earp gathers evidence to proof his innocence.
Earp's witness turns out to be the rustled cow and her calf. Earp is able to proof to the judge and jury that calf is the key to proving the guilt of the large rancher and justice is served.
