Lawrence Dane is a smart bad guy

Warning: Spoilers
This episode features the usual Mannix elements. Mannix is in an impossible situation but defying the odds manages to take away a gun from a thug. A trained shooter misses hitting Mannix. The guest stars and supporting actors are good. Mannix is hit over the head. Someone shoots a couple of bullets into Mannix's office window. Mannix works the case for free yet has to pay rent, pay insurance, make car payments, pay for food, pay Peggy's salary and his salary. Somehow his finances magically work out. As usual, Mannix gets no action from the pretty lady. He might as well be a monk. There is a pretty woman in the episode, but she is way too young for Mannix.

Lawrence Dane as Lassiter proves to be one of the smartest villains on Mannix at least for most of the episode. He plans a brilliant strategy to cover up two murders he committed to make it look like they were committed by crazy serial killer Overkill played by Jay Robinson who excelled playing evil characters. Despite the plot weaknesses in this episode, I give it an eight out of 10 because Lassiter was smart for most of it.

Lassiter murders Red Bailey a security guard and friend of Mannix as the show opens. He plays into a situation where Overkill is about to call Paul Sorenson played by Jeff Corey who is live with his television show just begging Overkill to call him. Overkill's call comes just after Lassiter murders Red.

Lassiter has Red's apartment bugged and bugs Mannix's office. He is able to listen on conversations between Mannix and Lt. Malcolm which keeps him one step ahead of them. Unfortunately for him Mannix shows up at Red's apartment while Lassiter is there trying to remove the bug he planted. So guess what? He knocks Mannix out and later when Lt. Malcolm wakes Mannix up the first thing Mannix notices is that the finial is missing from the lamp shade. This scene was weak. Mannix wakes up with a nasty headache after being clubbed in the head but has sense enough to notice the missing finial? As a result he then deduces there was a listening device. Anyone else would be groggy, take medication and get more rest. Mannix is able to recover from a head wound like flipping a light switch. Maybe Lt. Malcolm should have been the one to notice the finial was missing. Lassiter should have left the apartment and returned after Mannix was gone.

Mannix finally figures out that Red knew one of the supposed victims of Overkill was not murdered by Overkill and was investigating this. This is why he was killed by Lassiter who is working for imprisoned mob boss Ty Webber played by Marc Lawrence. Webber is released from prison and he ordered the murder of Red. Mannix figures out the wire tape and sets up a listening Lassiter when he calls Lt. Malcolm telling him to back off. Lassiter falls for it and immediately calls Mannix to set up a meeting at a Japanese restaurant/water park with seals and fish. He says it is a good meeting place because it will be closed the next day.

Webber gets stupid at this point and insists on being there so he can personally kill Mannix. He should have listened to Lassiter and been somewhere else so he would have an alibi. Mannix shows up the next day and is surrounded and captured by Lassiter and the thug with him. Webber is stationed at an upper deck with a powerful rifle aimed at Mannix. Just before the shooting begins Lassiter brings out a bound Sorenson and then Mannix figures out his plan stating that Lassiter wants to make it look like he confronted Sorenson who he initially suspected, they fought and killed each other. Turns out it was Sorenson's pretty secretary who was the insider.

Just before Webber is able to get his shot off, Mannix is somehow able to take the gun away from Lassiter's hired hand which apparently surprised Webber and of course he misses. There is no way Mannix is getting a gun away from a trained mob hit man.

Mannix and Sorenson run away with Mannix telling Sorenson to stay put. Mannix wins the shootout and only then do the police show up to make the arrest. Why the police did not have the place staked out I'll never know.

Red and Mannix were good friends but Boyd Morgan was not the right actor for the role. It just seemed contrived that they were friends. Morgan looked like a middle aged slouch and not someone who Mannix would hang out with.

Jeff Corey added some color to this episode as Sorenson. Jay Robinson was memorable and entertaining as the nutty Overkill. However, I do understand how the police let him hang himself in custody. Lawrence as Webber is perfect casting. Lawrence had a deep, grovely, commanding voice and sinister looks. He makes a perfect mob boss type.

I have said this before and I'll say it again, if I was Mannix's landlord I would evict him. There is too much violence at the apartment!

WHO WILL BE NUMBER NINE???

Possibly inspired by the notorious Zodiac Killings at the time, and just as creepy...

10 Stars.

Richard Levinson, who would go on to write the acclaimed, if not controversial tv-movie THE GUN (1974), all about a series of owners of one gun, penned this episode in conjunction with Donn Mullally. Donn had also done several stories for IRONSIDE.

Mannix joins Lt. Malcolm (deadpan Ward Wood) in the hunt for a clever serial killer who has murdered eight people. The case gets even more strange as the killer may have had a fan(!) -- who added to the death toll. Joe again gets beat up and the plot is wild, but that's what made this show.

To the episode's credit is a dynamic supporting cast. Jay Robinson plays the serial killer called "Overkill". Robinson specialized in over the top characters, such as playing Julius Caesar on BEWITCHED. His claim to fame was playing Caligula in THE ROBE, though it came with a price as he became addicted to drugs. It took Bette Davis, an old friend, to help him get back into films, though he began a second career on tv.

Ultimate bad, bad guy Marc Lawrence returns, playing Ty Webber. He briefly worked as a director at Warner Brothers/ABC tv and did some fine work on 77 SUNSET STRIP, teaming with fellow director and producer William Conrad. Jeff Corey has a neat role here (as Sorenson), who also appeared in the macabre NIGHT GALLERY tv series. That may have lead to this part.

Look for Canadian actor Lawrence Dane, an unforgettable character actor, who went on to play in many cult films, such as the lieutenant in BRIDE OF CHUCKY.

Partly filmed at the famous Japanese Village at Buena Park, CA, close to Disneyland, about 30 miles south of LA. Not bad if you just settle back and roll with the punches. SEASON 4 EPISODE 24 remastered CBS/Paramount dvd box set.

An interesting idea but not much more

"Overkill" is a neat idea for an episode of a detective show. A serial killer who calls himself 'Overkill' has killed several people and likes to call a TV celebrity and talk about it. This hubris is his undoing, as eventually the police are able to track his phone calls and capture him. But there is a problem--one of his supposed victims may have actually been killed by someone else who deliberately has copied the m.o. of this psychopath. But, this would mean that the killer would need to know details that very few people could provide...making this an inside job.

So why did I give this great idea only a 6? Well, too many times the show resorted to Mannix-style clichés instead of allowing the plot to unfold normally. Once again, Mannix gets bashed over the head and is knocked out, once more Mannix brings the killers to a lonely place for a showdown and the police arrive just in the nick of time and much more that is too familiar. This could have been better.

This coulda been a contender

Warning: Spoilers
I'm with Plankton on this one. Much like the previous episode, a nice premise is dragged down by the weak resolution. A brief summary - a psycho named Overkill (Jay Robinson) is killing people for fun and telling celebrity Paul Sorenson (Jeff Corey) all about it. Meanwhile, Joe's friend Red Bailey (Boyd "Red" Morgan) thinks one of Overkill's victims was done in by someone else. That victim was a recently released convict who testified against crime boss Ty Webber (Marc Lawrence). Webber's thugs killed the guy and made it look like Overkill did it. They got the inside information on how to do it from Sorenson's secretary. Red is killed and it looks like Overkill has struck again. Joe swings into action. Overkill is captured and kills himself in his cell. Joe is knocked out. Joe finds out Red's place and his office is bugged. Crime boss Webber gets out of prison and wants Joe dead. The climax is in the Japanese village and solved in typical Mannix fashion with shooting and fisticuffs. As usual, the police timing is perfect as they arrive too late to help but they can arrest everyone.

Joe gets knocked out and gets in another great shot with his pistol to kill Webber. Since the Japanese garden meeting place was established hours prior, you would think the police would have been staked out there well before the meeting. It would have been a more interesting climax if the police had never caught Overkill and he showed up at the Japanese village wanted revenge on those who copied his style. Joe, the criminals, and Overkill chasing after each other.

The acting is fine. Nobody does slimy like Jay Robinson. A snake personified. Marc Lawrence spent decades doing the tough crime boss. Jeff Corey was everywhere back then. Somewhat surprising that this is his only Mannix appearance.

Joe is unpaid yet again but he is in it for an old friend and did get justice done so he accomplished his goal. Overall, a decent enough episode that could have been so much better. Worth seeing if you have a spare hour but don't go out of your way for it.
