- When one of Jessica's former students brings a play based on her novel to Broadway, she finds herself in the middle of a war between two rival critics.
- Producer Shayne Grant mounts Walter Knapf's play 'Mainely Murder', a reworking of JB Fletcher's mystery, who was one of his teachers. Only after the pre-premiere Broadway interviews, Walter admits he was railroaded into appalling changes. The critics do a destructive job on the play, worst of all by ever-condescending TV columnist, Elliot Easterbrook. Shortly after, the Chronicle newspaper critic, Danny O'Mara, who gave the only glowing review while also attacking Elliot's, is found murdered after Easterbrook shouted he should be permanently silenced. Jessica and the NYPD work their way through suspects among cast, crew and critical body, starting with Elliot, who was found there holding a gun but has a TV alibi, only to find the killer after examining notes and computer files.—KGF Vissers
- Jessica is in New York City to attend the premiere of a play, Mainely Murder, that is based on one of her novels. Everyone, including the young playwright, Walter Knapf, is nervous about opening night and what the reviewers may have to say. One of those reviewers, Elliot Easterbrook, is known for being particularly nasty and vile and, sure enough, his review is devastating. To everyone's great joy, however, the reviewer for the Chronicle, Danny O'Mara, considered to be the most important, is highly positive, praising the production to the hilt. He also has some disparaging remarks in his column about Easterbrook. When O'Mara is found dead with Easterbrook standing over him with a gun in his hand, the police think they have an open and shut case. Not so, as the autopsy determines that O'Mara had been dead for several hours when his body and Easterbrook were found together. With that, Jessica has yet another murder to solve.—garykmcd
