They do things differently in... Holland
Huva00116 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Great series and in this episode Sam is involved in the death of Leo, an AIDS patient. One of his friends, or maybe his doctor, is a Doctor De Groot. She's from Amsterdam. Sam finds a needle mark and a high dosis of morphine. Could it be an aided suicide of even murder? She consults Trevor and the Dutch Doctor... Mmmm.... aided suicide, euthanesia... It's legal in Holland, says Sam. Yes, they do things differently over there, says Trevor.

The BBC and writers should've known better or just look it up. Euthanesia can be legal in Holland when procedures are followed. The process is very controlled and scrutinized. Just sticking a needle into someone, even with consent (was it found here?) is just plain murder and as illegal as it is in the UK.

And doing something illegal in the UK that is legal in your own country will still get you into jail.

I don't know how it ends, am still watching but couldn't let is Going Dutch pass... If you don't understand something, look it up. Don't let prejudice get the better of you.

A tough watch.
Sleepin_Dragon9 December 2019
Sam is suspicious when Stuart Evans has an unusual puncture mark. Stuart had AIDS and associated illnesses, she suspects foul play.

I find this one incredibly sad, it is powerful enough to have you close to tears even now. Twenty years later, and thank goodness HIV doesn't have the same degree of impact as it did in 1997.

The story surrounding Mark Tate was enormously sad, a young man, with his health in decline, set to go blind, his farewell tape is a sad watch. Talk of euthanasia even then, and we're still asking the same questions now.

Super acting, Roberta Taylor and Joe Duttine are excellent.

Tough, but first class. 9/10

AIDS Rears Its Head
Hitchcoc7 February 2019
Considering this was put out over 20 years ago, we have a picture of the terror of this disease. Thank goodness, there has been some headway made in the treatment of HIV. The portrayal of those sick men broke my heart. I met some AIDS patients while visiting a friend. She was running errands for them and invited me to go along with her. All that aside, this episode deals in two subjects. The first is the obvious devastation of the disease. The second involves the deaths of some of the men due to possible injections. They were hopelessly ill at the time and the question of mercy comes in. I'm interested to see how they deal with this. Sam is entrenched in the right to life and the chances taken away from people, even those in great pain.
