- Picard and Data follow Spock into Romulan space on a dangerous mission.
- The Enterprise's mission is aborted to return to a Starbase where Admiral Brackett charges them with investigating the disappearance and possible defection to the ever-scheming Romulans of Federation ambassador Sarek's son Spock, who did not say goodbye to his parents but took all his personal belongings after a public row with Sarek over the Cardassian war. A visit from Picard makes them realize the key must be Romulan senator Pardek, with whom Spock maintains decades-long personal contacts, against Sarek's will. Meanwhile, Klingon leader Gowron is writing the Federation's help in the civil war out of official history, so Picard resorts to suggestions to get him to provide a cloaked ship, reluctantly commanded by Captain K'Vada, for this mission, with Data, both prepared to impersonate Romulans on Romulus. Meanwhile, Commander Riker and Counselor Troi find examining the disappearance of a Vulcan ship to and from the Ferengi most dangerous.—KGF Vissers
- The Enterprise is urgently recalled to a nearby Starbase where Captain Picard is informed that Ambassador Spock has disappeared and been reported on Romulus. They are certain he has not been kidnapped and at this stage believe he has defected. Picard visits Spock's dying father, Ambassador Sarek, who has not seen his son for some time and has little information for him. Picard enlists the assistance of the Klingons - who are rather less friendly now that their civil war is over - to get a ship with a cloaking device. Made to look like Romulans, Picard and Data are soon on Romulus meeting with Senator Pardek and others hoping to learn exactly what Spock is doing. Meanwhile, Commander Riker and the Enterprise investigate why the Ferengi might be interested in old Vulcan ships from a space-based junkyard.—garykmcd
- The Enterprise's mission is aborted to return to a star base where Admiral Brackett (Karen Hensel) charges them with investigating the disappearance and possible defection to the ever-scheming Romulans of dying Federation ambassador Sarek's (Mark Lenard) son Spock (Leonard Nimoy). Spock didn't say goodbye to his parents (including his mother Perrin (Joanna Miles)) but took all his personal belongings after a public row with Sarek over the Cardassian war. Perrin says that Spock's departure was organized and deliberate. Sarek and Spock's relationship was strained and Perrin told Spock that Sarek was offended by Spock's public criticism of his position on the Cardassian war.
Meanwhile Picard also gets reports of metal fragments recovered from a Ferengi spaceship that look Vulcan in origin. The metal is Dentarium, designed for use in space, and was damaged in a high-speed impact. Geordi figures out that the metal fragments are from a Vulcan deflector array. The Ship was T'Pau, which was decommissioned on Federation base at Qualor II.
A visit from Picard makes Sarek realize the key must be Romulan senator Pardek (Malachi Throne), with whom Spock maintained years-long personal contacts, against Sarek's will. Sarek will not accept that Spock has defected. Sarek agrees that Spock might have gone to Romulus to visit Pardek. Pardek is considered a radical in Romulus as he has always advocated peace throughout his career. Pardek has been a senator for 9 decades and has sponsored many reforms in Romulan society. He leads the Krocton segment district on Romulus. He has a home there.
Meanwhile Klingon leader Gowron is writing the Federation's help in the civil war out of official Klingon history. Gowron claims that it was his courage that ended the civil war, taking credit away from Picard. Picard needs a cloaked ship to cross the neutral zone. Picard sends a message that if Gowron is not willing to provide a ship then Picard & the Federation might align with others on the Klingon high council for the same. Gowron provides a ship, although reluctantly, piloted by Captain K'Vada (Stephen Root). K'Vada offers Picard spartan quarters and no special concessions on the ship. Picard brings Data with him for the mission. Picard and Data are prepared to impersonate Romulans on Romulus.
Meanwhile Commander William T. Riker and Troi examine the disappearance of T'Pau, at Qualor II. The surplus depot at Qualor II is operated by the species Zakdorn. Klim Dokachin (Graham Jarvis) is the quartermaster. Klim is very uncooperative and asks Riker to schedule an appointment before he will consider helping them. Deanna is tasked to convince him to help, and he takes the Enterprise to where the T'Pau is docked, but the ship is missing. Plus, the deflector array of the T'Pau (the one found in the destroyed Ferengi vessel) was fitted to the ship Tripoli. Tripoli is also missing. Riker finds that the Tripoli was being supplied by the depot 2 times day, hence someone at the depot was receiving the shipments meant for the Tripoli. He lies in wait and before long a heavily armed, unidentified spaceship assumes the same position as the Tripoli. Riker hails them, but they attack instead. Riker is forced to fire and even with a short burst designed to disable the ship, the ship explodes.
Picard gets the message on K'Vada's ship that Sarek has died. The Romulans, led by their Pro-Consul Neral (Norman Large) already had information on Picard arrival on their planet. Neral informs Pardek of Picard's impending arrival and asks him to report to the security agencies, if Picard tries to make contact.
Picard and Data beam down to Romulus surface. They locate Pardek, who also identifies Picard and brings him and Data to a secret location for a meeting. Spock is with Pardek.
