- Will, Beanpole and a group of other Freemen are chosen to compete in "The Games" held by the Tripods. Winners are taken to The Golden City where, the Freemen hope to collect information on how to destroy the Tripods.
- All the youth among the Freemen are training for upcoming sports contests. That's because the winners are honored by being taken to the City of Gold to serve the Tripods. Julius, the Freemen leader, feels this is the way in which they can observe first-hand how the Tripod technology works. Will is training for boxing, Henry for running and Beanpole for the long jump. When not training, there are classes to attend. Beanpole is particularly interested in the theory of light waves. A small group heads to a local village to steal some animals while the residents are distracted with a capping ceremony. They watch as a girl and her brothers are capped. Unfortunately, a chance reflection of sun off of Anne's binoculars alerts the village to their presence. The Tripods give chase. Anne's brother Pierre offers to distract them while the others get a cow and a bag of poultry safely away. Pierre is overtaken and squashed beneath a Tripod foot. As the date of games approaches, plans are made for three different venues - Lake Constance, Basel and the Jura. Henry tells the Freemen leaders that he has watched Tripods doing practice maneuvers on hillsides. He thinks it would be easy to start taking them out using grenades. Julius replies that they would never get them all that way. Contestants are picked for each of the events - Fritz for 100m and 200m races, Maria for javelin, Gianni for 3000m, Beanpole or the long jump, Kip for 400m race and Will for light-weight boxing. The freemen leaders value Henry's aptitude for anti-Tripod strategy. They ask him to stay.—Garon Smith
