Power is permanence

Hacker and Humphrey deal with a potential cabinet reshuffle.

This is a very strong episode with a hilarious take on both European and domestic politics.

The plot is simple, with Humphrey and Hacker setting the scene early on with their take on Europe and the career paths of cabinet ministers. All the uncertainty about Hacker's future is then in focus and it is comical to see the implications for both politicians and civil servants.

There are several brilliant and memorable moments such as Humphrey's quite stereotypical views of various Europeans and his adoption of a strategy that suits his own purpose. I also love how every character has the same opinion on Hacker's performance as minister.

All actors are excellent as ever.

For me it is an 8.5/10 but I round upwards.

Prescient

Warning: Spoilers
Even though The Devil You Know debuted in 1981, so over 40 years ago, it was quite prescient when it came to the UK's referendum to leave the European Union in 2016 and the consequences of that. Anyway, it's like the writers were on the zeitgeist.

Jonathan Lynn co-created and co-wrote Yes, Minister with Antony Jay. Interestingly, Antony Jay received a knighthood to become Sir Antony Jay but to this day Jonathan Lynn hasn't. Yet Jonathan Lynn went on to direct Clue, Nuns on the Run, My Cousin Vinny, and The Whole Nine Yards so it's strange init that Jonathan has been overlooked for a knighthood.
