After many failed attempts at capturing some Pokémon, Ash throws a rock and hits a Spearow, who gets angry and calls an entire flock to chase Ash and Pikachu. They run away from the Spearow, in which Ash "borrows" a bike from a red-haired girl named Misty to escape, but when they cannot go any farther, Ash uses his body to shield Pikachu from the attacking Pokémon. - Ash Ketchum is finally 10 years old, old enough to finally become a Pokemon trainer in the town of Pallet. It's the night before the big day when he goes to Professor Oak, Pallet's local Pokemon expert, to get his first Pokemon. Ash's mom comes in his room and turns his TV. to a broadcast sent out by Professor Oak since he can't get to sleep. After the program is over, Ash gets ready for bed. Eventually Ash falls asleep and he starts to dream of which Pokemon he will choose in the morning. During his sleep, however, he ends up tossing his Voltorb alarm clock against the wall thinking it was a Pokeball. Because of that, Ash accidentally sleeps in and arrives at Professor Oak's lab late.
Ash gets to the lab (in his pajamas) just in time to run into Gary, Professor Oak's grandson. After some rude comments from Gary, Ash makes his way into the lab. To Ash's horror, all of the Pokemon seem to have been taken! Professor Oak does have one Pokemon left though, an electric mouse known as Pikachu. Ash is happy to get Pikachu, but Pikachu doesn't share the sentiment. After getting jolted once or twice by Pikachu, Ash finally makes it out of the lab with some Pokeballs and his Pokedex named Dexter. After a fond farewell from his mom and other town members, Ash starts off on his Pokemon journey...
On Route 1, Ash runs into a Pidgey, but Pikachu won't help him catch it. After trying to capture it on his own, Ash accidentally angers a Spearow which attacks both him and Pikachu. Pikachu finally unleashes an electrical attack on the Spearow, but the Spearow calls for his friends. Ash and Pikachu make a run for it and jump into a river to get away from the Spearows. After narrowly dodging a Gyarados, Ash and Pikachu get fished out by a young girl named Misty.
Misty notices that Pikachu is pretty hurt and points Ash in the direction of the nearest Pokecenter. However, the Spearows find Ash and Pikachu and begin chasing them again. Ash steals Misty's bike vowing to return it...someday. It starts to storm and the Spearows are getting closer. Ash wrecks the bike and the Spearows finally catch up with him. Ash decides to make a stand against the Spearows, risking his life to save Pikachu. Pikachu saves the day with a powerful blast of electricity, though, after seeing how much Ash cared for him. After the ordeal, Pikachu seems to like Ash a little better, Ash sees a mysterious golden bird Pokemon (Ho-oh?), and Misty's bike is toast. Thus begins the adventures of Ash and Pikachu...
