- Controversy about a proposed supermarket ruining the quality of life in a small village, marital infidelity, contaminated soil, and kinky sex lead to murder
- A stabbing in a nearby village brings Barnaby into contact with people fighting for and against the building of a supermarket on the site of an abandoned mill. The victim was known to many people in the village, but under at least four different names. Barnaby isn't sure the victim's death is directly related to the controversial development or to the reason behind the man's many different names, which isn't all that savory.—Ron Kerrigan <mvg@whidbey.com>
- Villagers of Eleverton-cum-Latterly are divided over the new supermarket development, already approved by the municipality provided the highly polluted wood mill site is cleaned up for free first. Shortly after a heated meeting, where fans of associated 'affordable houses' clash with threatened small businesses, Frank Hopkirk, an independent environmental supervisor, hired by both supermarket and town, is found by school kids at Jubb's field, near the site of the new supermarket. He was fatally stabbed but earlier and elsewhere, while covered in BDSM bruises, part of the fantasy role-playing scenarios practiced, cloaked as part of a wide variety of free time courses, by previously destitute villagers/ couples, including a private 'Cordon Bleu' class Hopkirk took, into the bedroom, but under a fake name, while using another alias in the stud farm's sensual crop-whipping service. Barnaby and Jones further find the victim was expected to falsify the environmental report to the supermarket's advantage to buy the land truly cheap, and look into private rivalries and secrets.—KGF Vissers
- There's friction among the villagers in Elverton where there is widespread disagreement over the construction of a large Goodfare supermarket. Those in favor see it as a convenient way of getting their shopping done without having to drive great distances while those opposed see it as the beginning of the end of village life. Emotions are running high, including a bout of fisticuffs at a village meeting. With all of this going on around them, DCI Barnaby and DC Jones investigate the murder of Frank Hopkirk, an environmental consultant who was in the village working on the supermarket project. He was found stabbed to death in an old mill but as the police investigate, they learn that he was something of a Lothario. In fact, several of the leading citizens of Elverton are involved in sex games, from role-playing to mild S&M, all of which the dead man happily participated in. Jealousy however played the major role in his death.—garykmcd
