Chicago – Two beloved Tim Burton films recently made their Blu-ray debuts and the once-great director has one of the most interesting visual sensibilities in the last thirty years, making his work a perfect fit for HD. Even the deeply-flawed “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” looks great in HD and, well, there’s a soft spot in this critic’s heart for Pee-Wee Herman’s film debut, a comedy that has held up remarkably well in the 26 years (!!!) since its release. Both of these Blu-ray editions are pure imports with no new special features but you might want to add at least one to your collection.

Synopsis: For some unexplained reason, letters to Santa Claus are being returned to the children of Junctionville. It seems some resident has angered St. Nick by calling him “a fraudulent myth!” Skeptical Albert Mouse has to be brought to his senses “and let up a little on the wonder why.” How Albert is persuaded to change his tune paves the way for Santa’s jolly return to town – and the joyous finale of the animated fable inspired by Clement Moore’s poem and produced by the merrymaking conjures of Rankin/bass studios. On October 4, Warner will release two fantasy-adventure films by Tim Burton on Blu-ray for the first time in the U.S. 2005’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory starring Johnny Depp (Pirates of the Caribbean franchise) and the 1985 comedy Pee-wee’s Big Adventure will be made available for the list price of $19.98 each.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory rang up over $200 million at the box office in the U.S, will be accessorized with the bonus features on its Blu-ray edition, all of which were imported from earlier DVD and HD editions of the film:
