- The Enterprise is transporting its first captain, now Commodore, Robert April, to Babel where he will reluctantly accept his retirement. Robert was in the San Francisco Navy Yard, where the components of the Enterprise were built. The ceremony is to be attended by ambassadors of all Federation planets. Sarah was the first Medical officer of the Enterprise (first Medical officer on a ship equipped with Warp Drive) and is also on board. Sarah is Robert's wife. Robert is 75 yrs old. The Enterprise is passing close to the Beta Niobe Nova.
When the Enterprise attempts to stop an unidentified vessel (travelling at warp 36) on a collision course with the Beta Niobe nova. The Enterprise puts a tractor beam on the vessel (after the vessel fails to respond to the Enterprise's hails) and receives a message that only plays in reverse. The woman captain of the vessel demands to be released immediately; else she is doomed. The tractor beam has less impact (the vessel only slows down to warp 32) and the Enterprise starts being pulled by the unidentified vessel. The Enterprise releases the tractor beam, but its controls are now inoperative. The Enterprise accelerates to warp 20 and still increasing. The ship passes into through the heart of the Nova and into an alternate dimension where time flows in the opposite direction. The Enterprise follows it through the Nova. The new Universe is opposite to the original one. Here the universe is white and the stars are black. The flow of time in this universe is reversed.
Enterprise again contacts the captain of the unidentified vessel, captain Karla Five, and learns that she got pulled into Kirk's Universe when a dead star in her Universe went Nova. And when 2 stars go Nova in both Universes at the same time, they create a tunnel and its possible to travel between them. Thats how she was able to enter Kirk's universe and was in a hurry get back before the window closed.
Karla says that Kirk cant go back the same way as her Nova is now a star. She offers help via her scientists. In her Universe people are born in old age and die as infants. Karla Five and Spock compare the star maps of both Universes and figure out locations where both Universes have stars. They then figure out which stars are about to go Nova in both Universes
Karla had used the speed of her ship to cross over and Enterprise is not capable of that speed, and hence the same tractor beam maneuver is designed, with an unmanned Karla's ship providing the speed to cross over back into Kirk's Universe. The crew of the Enterprise rapidly begins to grow younger in age and soon becomes unable to man the consoles. But then Robert and Sarah turn into adults and assume command of the Enterprise and steer it through the complex maneuvers required to get back into their own Universe.
Robert then orders all the kids through the Transporter to put them back together into their original molecular structure. Robert and Sarah decide also to go through the Transporter as Robert doesn't think he can improve upon his life with Sarah. Starfleet belays Robert's retirement order..
