- En route to Sherman's Planet, the Enterprise encounters Cyrano Jones (a known intergalactic trader and a General nuisance), as well as the Tribbles, which have been engineered grow to monstrous size. Kirk had been tasked with two robot ships stuffed with Quintotriticale to be delivered to Sherman's planet (which is besieged by crop failures and famine. The grain shipment is critical to the survival of the planet), Kirk veers off course to protect Cyrano Jones when a Klingon ship fires upon his vessel. Enterprise veers off to investigate if Klingons have a new type of weapon.
A skirmish follows, draining the Klingon ship as its new weapon (a projected Statis field) immobilizes the Enterprise (it kills the engines by disabling their matter-antimatter generators). The Enterprise loses its weapons as well, but Scotty is able to beam over Cyrano Jones, before his vessel is destroyed by Klingon fire. The Klingon captain Koloth (James Doohan) wants the pilot of the vessel to be handed over to him, as he is charged with ecological sabotage. Kirk wont agree as the vessel was a federation ship and in Federation space, and hence subject to its protection and laws. Kirk orders to ram the Klingon ship with his 2 robot grain ships (which are not held by the Klingon Statis field). Koloth again conjures the field, but this drains his power reserves completely.
Cyrano (who has been transported on-board the Enterprise) carries a Tribble predator (called a Glommer) and a collection of genetically altered "safe" Tribbles (Tribbles are known to multiply rapidly to overwhelm any host ecosystem and its resources). The new Tribbles don't breed. They just grow fat and large. Cyrano admits to selling some Tribbles on a Klingon planet. He admits that Klingons and Tribbles don't like each other.
As one of the grain ships was damaged, Kirk is forced to transport its entire cargo to the Enterprise (this fills the entire cargo hold and every available free space on the Enterprise). Spock wonders how long it takes for the Klingons to recharge and fire (they can do so in a matter of hours). When they do, the Klingons attack the 2nd robot ship and damage only its propulsion. Next the ship attacks Enterprise with photon torpedoes, which Kirk deflects with his shields. But the bumps lead to the grain storage bins to be thrown about and left open.. The Tribbles gorge on the open grain and become very fat. Kirk realizes that the growing and fat Tribbles are the ecological sabotages that the Klingons are talking about.
The Klingons recharges again and attacks the Enterprise. The Klingons intend to board, but before they can, Kirk transports its Tribbles over to the Klingon ship and immobilizes it even worse than the Enterprise. Koloth finally reveals that Cyrano stole the Tribble predator and he is prepared to go to war for it. The predator was the first and they need it to breed the others, before the Tribbles completely overrun the planet. Kirk agrees. Meanwhile McCoy figures that the giant Tribbles are nothing but colonies of the small Tribbles. He gives them a shot to break them down and to slow down their metabolic rate, which will reduce their food intake.
