- Famous humanitarian Carter Winston, missing for five years, has been discovered and beamed aboard the Enterprise. As luck would have it, his fiance, Anne Nored (Nichelle Nichols), currently serves aboard as well. Carter is a trader and has made tonnes of money in the past, which he has used to help Federation colonies, time and again.
Unfortunately, Carter is neither whom he seems to be nor what he seems to be. McCoy's medical test reveal certain readings that he has never seen on humans before. Carter meets Anne and breaks up with her saying that he has changed. Then Carter gets Kirk alone and reveals his true shape as an shape shifting alien. The Alien makes Kirk unconscious, puts him in his cabin and assumes Kirk's shape. Kirk orders a direct course via the Neutral zone, despite knowing that Romulans can confiscate the ship if they catch the enterprise in the neutral zone. Kirk justifies this saying that Carter has revealed the urgency to get to Rator III at the earliest and the course suggested is the quickest, and Carter himself came from the Neutral zone last week and found no Romulans there.
The real Kirk regains consciousness and reaches the bridge. He thinks he fell asleep and has no idea why the ship is in the Neutral zone. When Spock shows him the tapes of his orders, Kirk orders the ship out of the Neutral zone at warp 8. Spock and Kirk go to meet McCoy, who has been replaced by the alien. The alien tells Kirk that Carter checked out normal, and doesn't react angrily when Spock suggests he could have made a mistake. Kirk and Spock know something is wrong. They go back in and find McCoy sleeping in a back room. Kirk corners the alien who was hidden as an examination table in the sickbay (there were only 2 tables, he was the 3rd).
Kirk and Spock find that the alien is a shape shifting Vendorian, whose planet is quarantined. The Vendorian escapes as 2 Romulans star-ships confront the Enterprise. They demand the surrender of the ship as per terms of the treaty. Kirk refuses to surrender as he charges the Romulans with plating a spy on his ship. Meanwhile the Vendorian gets into Engineering section and disables the shields of the Enterprise. Carter tries to escape, but is confronted by Anne, who cant shoot At Carter. The alien reveals his true form to her, but she still wont fire at him. The shields go up just in time for Kirk to withstand one direct hit from the Romulans, but then Kirk fires on both Romulan ships and disables their propulsion. Both the ships retreat.
Turns out the alien was touched by Anne's devotion to Carter and became the shield between the Romulans and the Enterprise. After the skirmish, the alien surrenders to Kirk. He says that he is a lowlife on his own planet and Romulans offered him a purpose. But he could not let Anne be harmed and hence decided to fight for the Enterprise. He would have to stand trial.
