It does a good job of balancing the positive and negative views of the waste man but ultimately this isn't enough to justify watching it
As part of making the film Exodus with the people of Margate, Antony Gormley was commissioned to make a large figure out of wooden rubbish using volunteers. Once complete the figure would be burnt to the ground. This film is a documentary following the construction and demolition of this figure.
It is unfair to view this film outside of the context of the film "Exodus" that is due in 2007 but that is the way that the film was screened so what can I do. As a result the film spends half its time trying to justify the "why" and the rest showing the "how". In the former it is unsuccessful, in the latter it is a little dull. The film opens with Gormley and the Exodus writer/director talking about the project. It is a rather pompous few moments that is nicely cut against the uncaring faces of the crowd involved. It does try to bring out a reason but it only manages to produce one woman who sobs as she puts an object into the man so she can "let go of it" as it burns. Outside of her the film mainly has people confused or bemused by the whole thing of course it is cool to watch it burn but mostly it is seen as a waste of time or "b0ll0cks". I suppose it is credit to the makers for having this mix but it doesn't make it that good a film. The actual construction of the thing is so-so but hardly that interesting.
Overall then this is an average film that doesn't have a great deal going for it to make it worth seeing. It doesn't allow for much discussion of the art or the reasons behind it and the actual building is not that interesting. It does a good job of balancing the positive and negative views of the waste man but ultimately this isn't enough to justify watching it.
