Karl Sponholtz
Team Gay's Karl Sponholtz is so close to being the next Hgtv Design Star he can smell it – and he got a good whiff of first season winner David Bromstad along the way, too.
"David smells amazing," Sponholtz said about the reality competition show's official mentor. "He loves to hug, and he smells really good when he's doing it."
Sponholtz, a Chicago-based designer for an architecture firm and freelance interior designer, didn't expect to find himself in the final two. Nonetheless, tonight he'll square off against fellow Chicagoan Meg Caswell for the Season Six crown in front of judges Vern Yip, Genevieve Gorder, and design queen Candice Olson.
"Like most people in this field, I was a victim of the recession," Sponholtz told AfterElton.com, "I had a lot of time on my hands, so I dropped off my application on the way to a party. I didn't...

David Bromstad is Hgtv's darling. After the nervous but extremely talented interior decorator won Hgtv Design Star in 2006, Bromstad learned to be comfortable in front of the camera. And now he's everywhere. From hosting his own series Color Splash to co-hosting duties on the new show Hgtv'd to appearances on specials like Hgtv Dream Home Giveaway and Bang for Your Buck, Bromstad has put his stamp on the network. And now he's returning to his roots as the Tim Gunn-Style mentor on Design Star.
In a recent conference call interview he confessed, "I’ve been watching Design Star since I won and [am] just in awe of the talent that has come through there. And now to be a part of it is just, it feels right. It feels amazing. And I had so much fun. It’s a true honor."

If you follow me at all, you probably know that I am something of a nut for reality competition shows. "Nut," because they have some appeal to me, regardless of what the particular subject is and/or whether or not it is anything I would watch a "regular" show about.
I have no real interest in becoming a chef, and don't watch cooking shows, but I watch all the various shows that put chefs in competition with each other. Likewise, I have little interest in fashion, interior design, or the cutting of hair, but most of these will get me to watch the reality shows.
Design Star is on its way back to you July 11th at 9/8c, and things are a little different this time around. David Bromstad, the season one winner, is going to take on the role of contestant mentor, apparently in something like a very similar...

Try David’s tips on how to get your very own white Winter Wonderland in your home this year!
Christmas is the season to be jolly and what better way to get into the spirit of the holiday than to decorate your home like a Winter Wonderland this year? Hgtv’s Color Splash designer David Bromstad, 37, tells HollywoodLife.com how to create the perfect winter landscape within your home!
First, David suggests putting tons of Christmas trees around your home. “I have twelve Christmas trees in my house and they’re all clumped together,” David tells us. “My neighbors think I’m crazy. They are like, ‘Oh my gosh, look at all the trees!’ [But,] it looks like a winter wonderland when it’s all lit!”
He adds, “My favorite Christmas tree [in my home this year] is one giant one. It’s all white and I have lime greens and reds.”

Announcing This Year's Visibility Awards Host ... Neil Patrick Harris!
Like many businesses, the end of the year gets pretty hectic around here as we balance the books, hide the bodies, and fight over the freebies sent by the networks. (I'm still mad I didn't get the CSI "Do it Yourself Autopsy Kit!")
Not only do we have the Visibility Awards to get all shiny and polished to hand out to this year's winners on Monday, we also had to write up articles looking back at the year in TV, Movies, Music, Coming Out and so forth. All of that is on top of our usual recaps, articles and posts. And then there are the usual unexpected things to cover like John Cameron Mitchell's people calling us at the last minute to attend a screening of Mitchell's new movie Rabbit Hole starring Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckhart. And then we...

Torchwood has added Buffy the Vampire Slayer producer Kelly Manners to the team. Meanwhile, Eve Myles has rented a 1960s home in Hollywood, right under the sign to call home while filming the new season. But the good news is that she’s promised not to stay.
Gregg Araki’s omnisexual Kaboom is coming to IFC in January, giving you your chance to see Thomas Dekker get his bisexual on. Or that’s what the marketing print says, even if the press photos are pretty heterosexual.
The real David Karofsky is neither a bully nor a closet case, but he did go to school with Brad Falchuk, the co-creator of Glee. It seems that Falchuk names most characters he creates after people in his past. On Glee alone there’s Karofsky, Rachel Berry, and Puck is based on Noah “Zuck” Zuckerman. But nobody’s mad about it.

Spartacus: Blood and Sand is reportedly close to recasting Andy Whitfield’s title role. Three actors are being flown to New Zealand to test for the part, and presumably to see how they look naked. Leading candidates are Canadian Stephen Amell, Brit Aiden Turner, and Australian Liam McIntyre. You can look over the goods and vote for your favorite here.
Jon Stryker has donated a huge amount of money to gay rights. But he’s also thrown a large amount of money toward protecting primates. And now he’s been rewarded, with a new ape being named in his honor, Rhinopithecus strykeri.
If you’ve recently (since Friday) ridden the California Screamin’ rollercoaster at Disney California Adventure, you might have heard a familiar voice. Neil Patrick Harris recorded some audio to the theme of a carnival barker to go with the ride.
Would you ever live your life built solely around The Advice of Strangers?...

This week! Why do so many fictional gay couples have a “man” and a “wife”? Are Glbt people too thin-skinned? What was up with Noah’s fashion on Noah’s Arc? Plus, why do so many gays hate Perez Hilton?
Have a question about gay male entertainment or life? Contact me here (and be sure and include your city and state and/or country!)
Q: Despite being 26, I think I have a good grasp on what makes a gay icon and a good political ally. But I have never heard of Rep. Aaron Schock (R-il), nor that he is a major gay-icon for politically astute people. And yet here’s The New York Times calling him a “gay icon” because of some photos that swept the blogosphere of him shirtless. Never mind that he voted against Enda and opposes civil marriage: he's young and hot, which is what makes him a gay-icon right?...

David Bromstad’s Hgtv show, Color Splash, not only got renewed, but is bigger, brighter and yes, more colorful than ever, thanks to a new production company and a sizable budget boost. He's become a regular on Hgtv, appearing frequently on other shows like Bang for Your Buck and Summer Showdown. He's also vlogging his gently snarky insights on the current season of the show that gave him his start, Hgtv's reality competition show Design Star.

Yep, it’s that time of year.
No, not the time to sip daiquiris alongside the pool or go catch some cool waves at the beach. It’s the time of year to watch summer television!
Truthfully, with most of broadcast television in reruns, it’s mostly cable and reality show offerings. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t something of interest to viewers of gay-related programming.
What’s worth watching this summer? The Great Gay is here to help you decide!
Who is the Great Gay is, you ask? Why, as always, I’m the collective wisdom of all who toil here at AfterElton.com, the sum total of years of endless, stupefying television viewing!
Okay, it’s mostly just me blathering on, with the others yelling at me whenever I get something wrong.

If you're looking for a fabulous sparkly gay holiday, you can't go wrong tuning in to Hgtv, with its wall-to-wall holiday home decorating programming. And leading the parade is the network's best-known gay personality, David Bromstad, with an insider's tour of a Disney World Christmas.
Bromstad's no stranger to the happiest place on earth. "When I was a kid, what I wanted was to be a Disney animator," he said. "My dad took me to Disneyworld and I met with a lead animator there, and that's how I got started. I was a Disney freak. I was obsessed."
His obsession paid off, and he worked for Disney World for several years, until his victory on the first season of Design Star sent his life in a totally different direction. But getting back to his Magical Kingdom roots pretty much made his year. "I mean, I used to slave for them...

Adam Lambert (Sort Of) Kissed A Girl ... And No One Could Stop Talking About It
The big gay news of the week is that one big gay icon did something not so gay and set the gay blogosphere abuzz. That's right, Adam Lambert posed for some racy pictures with a nekkid girl and the reaction of our readers was all over the place as demonstrated by the nearly 70 comments folks posted. Our follow-up poll the next day registered nearly 2,000 votes and generated another 50+ comments.
As for the poll results — it was a dead heat with 41% of folks loving the pics and 41% saying "Ew" and believing that someone was trying to give Adam a "hetero" make-over. I'll say one thing; you folks had a ton of passionate, mostly articulate things to say about the topic.

Last weekend's Equality March in Washington D.C. got me to thinking about how far we have — and haven't — come in the fight for gay equality. But since AfterElton.com focuses on pop culture, I'm going to look at things through that lens and leave the political analysis for Pam's House Blend, Americablog, Bilerico and the other assorted gay political websites that cover the topic.
One of the very first times American television addressed the subject of gay men (bisexuality was almost never addressed) was way back in 1954 when the L.A. based tabloid talk show Confidential File presented "Homosexuals and the Problems They Present." Hmm, I'm guessing it wasn't terribly flattering unless it was about how boring straight people looked in comparison to us 'mos.
San Francisco's public TV station did the first ever documentary, The Rejected in 1961 and it wasn't until 1967 that a television show first featured a gay storyline.

Ambrose Price is unabashedly gay and wants the world to know it. And he's definitely not hiding his light under a basket. The star of Logo's new reality series, The Decorating Adventures of Ambrose Price, got his start on Hgtv Canada when he was a contestant on Designer Superstar Challenge, their version of Design Star. That would be the show out designer David Bromstad won in its first season here in the U.S and that launched Color Splash, Bromstad’s very successful design show. Ambrose didn't win his version of DS, but he did catch the attention of network executives and soon had his own show.
The concept of Decorating Adventures is that each week, Ambrose, a self-taught interior designer with no formal training, tackles a new facet of the design world in his attempt to become Canada's answer to Martha Stewart.

In last week's column, I discussed Glee and how some of the characters felt as if they bordered a little close to being stereotypes. I said:
Created by out writer Ryan Murphy (Nip/Tuck) the show includes much for a good gay boy to love including an out gay character. And some of the musical numbers are flat out brilliant. But I thought the first half of the pilot was actually bad and some of the characterizations — sassy, chunky black girl, fashion-obsessed gay boy — sometimes veered too close to stereotypes. Much will depend on how those characters evolve and whether the writing holds up .

The Hgtv reality show Design Star is really just one big job audition in front of millions of viewers. Each week contestants must complete interior design challenges such as making over an entire kitchen in 26 hours with only a $20,000 budget, and each week one designer is told by host Clive Pearse that their show has been canceled.
The pressure is high, but the stakes are higher: the winner is guaranteed their own show on Hgtv.
Openly gay designer David Bromstad won the first season, and between his gorgeous looks, sweet personality, and massive talent, his show Color Splash has gone on to become one of the cable channel's most popular series.
Unfortunately, while the next two seasons featured at least one or two gay designers among the hopefuls, none have managed to repeat David's success. Is that about to change as we go deeper into the fourth season?...

In addition, the Scripps-owned channel has ordered three more seasons -- or 39 additional episodes -- of Color Splash, the show hosted by Design Star's first-season winner, David Bromstad.
The third season of Design is set to debut in the third quarter. The show rewards one winning designer with his or her own series on HGTV.
The network said Friday that is it putting out a call for applications from potential contestants for Season 3.
The second-season finale of Design is set to air at 9 p.m. Sept. 16.
