- The Doctor, Martha and Jack return to the 21st Century eighteen months after the Doctor and Martha left. They find they've missed the election, and the new Prime Minister, Harold Saxon, is someone they've met before by another name.
- With the Master having regenerated himself and taken the TARDIS, the Doctor, Martha and Jack Harkness manage to return to Earth. When they arrive, they see the new British Prime Minister, Harold Saxon, on television and Martha immediately recognizes his voice: it's the regenerated Master. He announces that he has been contacted by alien beings and that they will arrive in two days' time. Despite an attempt by the American President to take over the situation, the Master is very much in charge. The situation is particularly stressful for Martha in particular as the Master has taken her family as prisoners.—garykmcd
- The Doctor (David Tennant), Martha (Freema Agyeman) and Captain Jack (John Barrowman) return to four days after they first left by using Jack's vortex manipulator. There they discover that the master (John Simm) alias Harold Saxon has become Prime Minister. Inside 10 Downing Street, the master meets Martha's sister Tish (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) who is unsure what to do in her new job. Then he walks into the cabinet and after calling all of them traitors, he gasses and kills them. As they collapse, he beats out a rhythm on the table. Journalist Vivien Rook (Nichola McAuliffe) obtains an interview with the Master's wife Lucy Saxon (Alexandra Moen) and uses it to warn her that 'Harold Saxon' only came into existance 18 months ago. However, the Master appears at the door and after revealing his true identity to her, introduces his friends, 4 floating metal balls with cultured, human yet metallic voices, and orders them to kill Vivien. The Doctor, Martha and Jack go to Martha's flat to research 'Saxon'. They discover that 18 months ago he launched Archangel, a telephone network. Martha and Jack both reveal they intended to vote for him, but fail to come up with a reason why. Martha starts absentmindedly tapping a rhythm on her bed as she talks. The turn on the television to see 'Saxon' anouncing contact with alien life, and one of the spheres, now identified as Tocklafane is shown on screen. In his speech, 'Saxon' mentions several jobs, emphasising medical student, Martha's job. The doctor looks at the back of the tv to reveal a bomb and they escape the flat just as it detonates. Martha calls her mum Francine (Adjoa Andoh) who says that she and her ex-husband Clive (Trevor Laird) may be getting back together. Martha does not fall for the lie, and as Clive tries to tell her what is really going on, he is taken away along Francine and Tish. Martha drives round to her Francine's house, but is forced to retreat by gunfire. Martha phones her Brother Leo (Reggie Yates) to warn him and finds out he is in Brighton. The Master intercepts the conversation and speaks to the Doctor, who tells him of the time war. Theh master reveals he was ressurected to fight. He also says that Jack's friends (Torchwood) are on a wild goose chase in the Himalayas and that the 3 of them are Britain's most wanted. A tocklafane appears and asks the master if the machine is ready and speaks of the "terrible darkness". The master says it reaches critical mass at 8:02 the next morning, 2 minutes after first contact. Hiding in an abandoned warehouse, Jack recieves an automated message from Vivien Rook explaininng that if the message arives then she is dead. Jack tells the Doctor that he now is in charge of Torchwood and he reacts angrily until Jack calms him down. They discover that Archangel is transmitting a rhythm that subliminally told people to "Vote Saxon" and the Doctors gives each of them a copy of the TARDIS key, which, when worn around the neck, enables them to walk around unnoticed. The Doctor compares it to not being noticed by someone you fancy, and this strikes a chord with Martha. The three watch as Air Force One touches down and the President (Colin Stinton) steps out. He informs 'Saxon' that UNIT now controls first contact, and that is must happen on neutral territory. They decide on the aircraft carrier the valiant. The president and 'Saxon' travel there with Martha's family (minus Leo, who evaded capture). Using the Vortex Manipulator, the trio teleport on board and Martha is suprised to find out that it is not a boat, but a sky ship. On board they find the TARDIS, but it has been turned into a paradox machine by the Master, set to activate at 8:02am. At first contact, the Master orders the tocklafane to kill the President. He uses his laser screwdriver to temporarilly kill Jack and artificially age the Doctor by 100 years. Jack gives Martha the Vortex Manipulator and tells her to leave. Her family are brought in to watch the Master's acheivements. The paradox machine activates and a rip opens in the sky above the Valiant. From this rip come 6 billion tocklafane. The Master orders them do decimate the population bye removing one tenth. Martha teleports back to earth but as she watches the destruction she swears she'll come back. Back on board, the aged Doctor stands between the Master and Lucy, and the Master at last forces the Doctor to confront the fact that he has won...
