The August bank holiday weekend in London is always cause for celebration for horror fans as the FrightFest horror and genre film festival rolls into the city’s Leicester Square for four days of blood-spattered cinematic mayhem. This year saw the arrival of horror icon and star of Re-Animator and You’re Next, Barbara Crampton, as the Guest of Honour who starred in no less than five of the entries this year including festival favourite We Are Still Here. As always with film festivals it was a real mixed bag, with very few scares but a lot of laughs (some intentional, other not so much) as the filmmakers, many of them horror fans themselves, had a lot of fun playing with the tropes and clichés of the genre while others tried to put fresh new spins on some well-worn material. Here are a few of the highlights:

It’s hard to imagine the characters that inhabit the world of “Penny Dreadful” being in worse emotional predicaments than they were at the end of season one, but creator and writer John Logan leaves his creations at their lowest points following the season two finale, “And They Were Enemies.” Thankfully, he has the combined talents of Eva Green, Billie Piper, Rory Kinnear and director Bruce Kirk to make the preceding hour a more satisfying finale than viewers might have expected. The previous episode, "And Hell Itself My Only Foe," found our heroes invading the home of Madame Kali (Helen McCrory) in order to rescue Sir Malcolm (Timothy Dalton) from her coven of witches. It ended with Vanessa Ives (Green) facing her greatest fear, a doll of herself, and a trapped Sembene (Danny Sapani) refusing to kill Mr. Chandler (Josh Hartnett) before the full moon transformed him into his uncontrollable werewolf state.

Showtime’s Penny Dreadful Memento Mori TV Show Review. Penny Dreadful: Season 2, Episode 8: Memento Mori contained so many surprises that I am scarcely capable of summing them up in a quick, snappy line that covers them all. In Memento Mori, the longest held secret in the series was revealed: the one concerning Dorian Grey (Reeve Carney) and the painting he allows no one else to see. The most delicious and succulent surprise though was the one Lily (Billie Piper) gave the viewer in this episode. Both reveals, Dorian and Lily’s, increased the scope of Penny Dreadful beyond what had previously been seen as its boundaries. Both were “wow” moments but Lily’s was incredible.
The discovery of Dorian’s secret was inevitable. How it was built up to was not. The story leading up to the painting’s reveal expanded the universe of the series. It also...

Horror drama Penny Dreadful will be returning for a third season next year.
Sky Atlantic and Showtime have renewed John Logan's critically-acclaimed series, which will shoot on location in Dublin for nine episodes to air in 2016.
The second season has seen Vanessa Ives (Eva Green) and Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett) forming a close bond as their group - including Sir Malcolm (Timothy Dalton), Dr Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway) and Sembene (Danny Sapani) - join forces to beat an evil force.
Sky Atlantic director Zai Bennett said of the series: "Penny Dreadful is the perfect fit for Sky Atlantic; truly international in scale and ambition but with a raft of British talent at its core, and filmed in the Republic of Ireland.
"I'm thrilled to have the series returning to the channel, and to once again be partnering with John Logan and continuing to work with our good friends at Showtime.

It's time for a ball in this week's Penny Dreadful. What could possibly go wrong? Becky reviews the inevitable yet genteel mayhem...
This review contains spoilers.
2.6: Glorious Horrors
One of the biggest strengths of this second season is how fluid the narrative has seemed from one episode to the next.
It's another connection back to its literary past; each episode is another chapter of the story, continuing directly from the climax of the previous episode and into the new one. Following last week's night of passion, we're treated to the morning after; Dorian's making plans for a ball, Lily's making eggs for Frankenstein and Kali is making a Malcolm doll as he treats his wife's death with little more thought than whether he should replace the carpet. Dorian invites everyone who is everyone to the ball whilst Sembene finally learns what Chandler has been hiding.
"It's a ball! What's the worst that could happen?...

Penny Dreadful, Season 2, Episode 6, “Glorious Horrors”
Written by John Logan
Directed by James Hawes
Airs Sundays at 10 pm Et on Showtime
Last week’s Penny Dreadful ended with several of the main characters shacking up for the night. This week is very much a “morning after” episode. Gone is the glow of a night of unexpected pleasure, replaced by a dull feeling of “What now?”
This has been a very up and down season for Penny Dreadful. There’ll be a rather flat episode that only serves to get the plot moving, which will then be followed by something magnificent. This week’s episode, “Glorious Horrors”, definitely falls somewhere in the “flat” realm. It’s redeemed in the end with a fancy ball that ends in a shower of blood, but it takes its sweet time getting there.
Sir Malcolm (Timothy Dalton) learns of his wife’s untimely demise, which...

Penny Dreadful, Season 2, Episode 4, “Evil Spirits in Heavenly Places”
Written by John Logan
Directed by Damon Thomas
Airs Sundays at 10 pm (Et) on Showtime
Everyone pairs up in the latest episode of Penny Dreadful, “Evil Spirits in Heavenly Places.” Penny Dreadful is obviously an ensemble show, but it’s always had a problem knowing quite what to do with its plethora of characters. After last week’s series highlight episode, which slowed things down and focused on a single coherent story, the show gets back to business, with “Evil Spirits in Heavenly Places,” attempting to cram in as much information as possible relevant to season two’s main plot.
Creator John Logan needs to find a new approach to his ever-growing cast of ghouls and werewolves and you can feel him sensing this here. His solution–pairing off almost every main character to move things along–gives the episode a fast,...

Dark forces are once again in pursuit of Vanessa in the remarkably deft Penny Dreadful season 2 opener, Fresh Hell...
This review contains spoilers.
2.1 Fresh Hell
Fresh Hell opens with a scene of tranquility as Vanessa strolls through a snow-covered park, a peace that is soon to be shattered by the mysterious Madame Kali as she begins to torment Vanessa. Chandler recovers consciousness to discover that he is covered in blood, surrounded by bodies with their throats ripped out whilst Frankenstein works to bring Brona back to life as Caliban’s companion. Chandler, previously intent on leaving, now finds himself staying in London as he and Sir Malcolm realise that something new and dangerous is hunting Vanessa.
As with any supernaturally-themed series, Penny Dreadful begins to expand the mythology on which it was founded, moving outwards from its literary influences to create its own coherent and realised world. However, the strength...

Penny Dreadful, Season 2, Episode 1, “Fresh Hell”
Written by John Logan
Directed by James Hawes
Airs Sundays at 10 pm Et on Showtime
Season one of Showtime’s Penny Dreadful was a gleefully gruesome gothic experience, firmly rooted in pulpy sensibilities and clearly influenced by Alan Moore’s The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. While it was not an altogether solid season of television, it had a ghastly charm, reminiscent of lurid Hammer horror films of the past.
The first season saw a rag-tag group of Victorian-era Londonites, including the demonically possessed Vanessa Ives (Eva Green), American gunslinger (and secret werewolf) Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett), and Dr. Frankenstein himself (Harry Treadaway), doing battle against ultraviolent vampires. The group banded together to embark on a quest to rescue Sir Malcolm Murray’s (Timothy Dalton) lost daughter Mina. Season one climaxed with Sir Malcolm realizing his daughter, now turned into a bloodsucker, was lost forever.

I’ve been intrigued by Penny Dreadful but never gave it the time; perhaps now is a good time to catch up with a binge watch as the latest trailer for season 2 makes it even more appealing.
For those who don’t know about the show, it goes something like this: An erotically-charged, profoundly unsettling new saga, Penny Dreadful completely reinvents literature’s most iconic and terrifying characters. Dorian Gray, Victor Frankenstein and timeless figures from Dracula join a core of original characters in a dark and brutal quest to save a soul — even as they grapple with their own monstrous temptations.
The show stars Eva Green, Josh Hartnett, Timothy Dalton, Reeve Carney, Rory Kinnear, Billie Piper, Harry Treadaway, Helen McCrory and Simon Russell Beale will also return and will be joined by Patti LuPone, Douglas Hodge, Sarah Green and Jonny Beauchamp.
Here’s the official synopsis for Penny Dreadful Season 2:

Eerie, erotic and wholly engaging, Penny Dreadful was one of the best new shows of the year, and I’m impatiently counting down the days until the Victorian-set horror-drama returns for its second season. While Showtime has announced no premiere date as of yet, a brief new teaser, titled “A Curse and a Blessing,” has just surfaced online, promising a continuation of the gory thrills that made season 1 such a compelling watch.
Unfortunately, there’s not much to the clip, which finds haunted protagonist Vanessa Ives (Eva Green) vowing to use her unusually strong connection to the shadowy Demimonde in order to help others throughout London. Elsewhere, American werewolf Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett) looks pensively off into the distance, tough-as-nails explorer Malcolm Murray (Timothy Dalton) looks sadly off to the side and scientist Victor Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway)… really, you too, Victor?? There’s a lot of contemplation going on here.

There are a lot of hot shows from 2014 I need to catch up with, and "Penny Dreadful" is one of them. Showtime's horror/fantasy concoction got some great buzz this year, but finding the time to settle in and check it out has been difficult. However, the second season is around the corner, so if you're like me and haven't had a chance to see what everyone has been talking about, perhaps now is the time. The brief teaser for the second season promises more period-based eeriness, scares and blood, with Eva Green returning to lead things along with Josh Hartnett, Timothy Dalton, Reeve Carney, Rory Kinnear, Billie Piper, Harry Treadaway, Helen McCrory and Simon Russell Beale also reprising their roles. As for what the next batch of episodes will bring, here's the official synopsis: This season, Vanessa and Ethan form a deeper bond as the group, including Sir Malcolm (Timothy Dalton), Dr.

Showrunner John Logan and three of the hunky male cast from Showtime's "Penny Dreadful" all turned up for a panel yesterday at this year's San Diego Comic Con. The hot topic of discussion was the soon to head into production second season of the supernatural series.
Logan confirms that after the shadowy vampire villain of the first season, this year the drama will be dealing with a human antagonist in the form of Helen McCrory's Madame Kali who made brief appearances two episodes of the first season. Despite the shuttering of Microsoft's Xbox Entertainment Studios, the "Halo" series is still going forward and Showtime remains in talks with the company about co-producing the series:

There have been numerous interweaving and not so interweaving plots during this inaugural season of "Penny Dreadful," but there have been two constants. The first has been the search by Sir Malcom (Timothy Dalton) and Ms. Vanessa Ives (Eva Green) to save Mina (Olivia Llewellyn) from the clutches of a vampire demon. The second has been the systematic haunting of Doctor Victor Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway, Jr.) by his first creation (Rory Kinnear), a vindictive son who brutally demands a bride from his creator. If the series finale told us anything it's that creator John Logan had no intention of dragging these story lines out any more than necessary. More so, Logan appears to have a lot more in store for "Dreadful's" unexpected group of flawed "heroes." Two of the series' best performances have been from Green and Dalton.
