- King of the Hammers is one of the world's biggest off-road races. Based in the beating heart of the Californian desert, every year thousands of spectators come together to witness man and machine verses mother nature's harsh deserts and rocky terrain. This race first started in 2007 with 12 guys racing each other over the dry lakes and across the expansive wastelands of Johnons Valley to win a crate of beer. Now with over 130 drivers from across the globe, 30 thousand spectators, and 181 miles of sand and rocks, King of the Hammers is now a highly respected off-road racing event.
Being one of the longest and most challenging events in rally history, King of the Hammers puts drivers through their passes as they have to climb up huge mountains with jaggeder rocks, tight corners and steep edges. Then speeding through the harsh heat and dust of the dry lakes in the California desert in an attempt to make it to the finish line.
Over 4 days racing round the clock there are different race events which include, motocross, UTV and the 4400 class. The vehicles in the 4400 class are known as ultra 4 vehicles, which are especially designed to withstand the rugged terrain. These particular machines can reach speeds of up to 150mph through the long desert parts of the course. The drivers and their pit crew can build their ultra 4 vehicles up to any size and any spec. Each vehicle is completely unique and can be upgraded or changed to fit the drivers skill set. Some drivers are more confident rock crawling while others are better racing over the dry lakes.
The 4400 class race can last up to 14 hours long. Drivers and their co-drivers have to be careful going through the rock crawling parts of the course, because one wrong move and you could be upside down, which costs time and points. This is a very dangerous event, cars have been known to catch fire, and even be air lifted out of the rocks. Drivers have to be physically capable at putting up with the dangers that face them over the course of the race. Being battered around in the drivers seat, put through the hot blistering sun in a monster of a machine with a constantly raring engine, King of the Hammers is definitely not for the faint hearted.
