I’ve always been a big fan of cozy small-town shows. I grew up on Gilmore Girls, watch Ginny & Georgia religiously, and never pass up a chance to return to the comfort of One Tree Hill. But somehow, I’ve never gotten around to bingeing Netflix’s Virgin River.
The romantic drama, which premiered in 2019, centers on Mel Monoe (Alexandra Breckenridge), a nurse practitioner and midwife who goes to work in the tiny, remote Northern California town of Virgin River in search of a fresh start — but like any charming small town, it comes with complications. The show is based on the book series of the same name by Robyn Carr, who also serves as an executive producer. In May 2023, it was renewed for a sixth season.

“I felt good about the first night. I was singing Kelly Clarkson. I’m singing her song in close to her key and it was ‘Wizard of Oz Night’ and I didn’t necessarily pick that song,” reveals Scott Porter while reflecting on his time as Gumball on “The Masked Singer.” “During dress rehearsal that night, I thought I had it all together and I had a panic attack.” Watch our full video interview above.
Despite a rocky start that landed him in a smackdown, Scott was able to survive all the way to the Season 11 finale, where he finished runner-up to Vanessa Hudgens as Goldfish. Although Vanessa had no clue she was competing with her “Bandslam” co-star, Scott recognized her voice instantly.

The Season 11 finale took place on “The Masked Singer” Wednesday, May 22. After singing their hearts out for panelists Robin Thicke, Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg, Ken Jeong and Rita Ora, Goldfish and Gumball stood by side as host Nick Cannon announced Goldfish was the winner. Before Goldfish revealed herself, the Gumball had to take it off and turned out to be award-winning actor Scott Porter.
When Nick asked Scott, “Who knew you could do what you do?” the actor replied, “Not even me until maybe tonight. I don’t have any legitimate training. I started singing on street corners in Orlando, Florida when I was going to high school. I auditioned for two straight years for Disney and couldn’t book a role. I didn’t know I could do this until tonight, but I’m so glad I did.”

During the aptly named Golden Age of Television, it seemed that representation on television for the LGBTQ+ community was improving.
More network shows started to embrace not just token gay characters, but well-written storylines centered around LGBTQ+ leads.
Even for relatively progressive shows, it took a long time to get there.
Grey's Anatomy, for example, showcased gay and transgender characters in its earliest seasons by weaving them into the series' medical cases.
But it wasn't until Season 4, when Callie Torres realized she was bisexual, that a main character on the show was recognized as LGBTQ+.
Don't get me wrong, we rarely saw perfect gay relationships on the screen. Glee gave us Kurt, Blaine, Santana, and Brittany.
Modern Family had Cam and Mitchell. Grey's Anatomy's Callie and Arizona made history on network television.
Most of these shows ended as the years went on.

There has been much pessimism floating around regarding this past weekend's box office. I myself have tossed some of that pessimism into the void. Much of that has to do with the fact that the summer movie season kicked off with "The Fall Guy" opening to a wildly disappointing $28.5 million, marking the worst start to summer in more than 20 years. Far less ink has been spilled regarding Sony's new horror movie "Tarot," which also opened over the weekend and snuck into the top five on the domestic charts with a $6.5 million debut. At first glance, it's not a good look for a movie from a major studio opening on more than 3,100 screens across North America. However, this might actually end up being a sneaky little hit.
"Tarot" also pulled in $3.7 million internationally, giving it a $10.2 million global start. Again, that number isn't going to break any records. It's not...

Hannah Marks started acting when she was 6 years old, after seeing her mother’s acting reel. And she’s pretty much worked nonstop, from roles in the films “Accepted” and “The Runaways” to the cast of “Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency.” In fact, just last year she took her first vacation — though she confesses to recording several self-tapes during it.
In recent years, she has also made a (forgive me) mark behind the camera as a filmmaker, beginning with writing and directing “After Everything,” The indie film starred Jeremy Allen White as a young man diagnosed with bone cancer who embarks on a new relationship, premiering at the SXSW Film Festival in 2018.
That same year, she landed the coveted directing job of the film adaptation of John Green’s beloved novel “Turtles All the Way Down.” The story focuses on a teenage girl named Aza (Isabela Merced) struggling with...

Many things weigh on Aza Holmes, the anxious protagonist of Hannah Marks’ Turtles All the Way Down, but none more than the existence of bacteria. Thoughts of these microorganisms — the ease with which they can infiltrate a body and the chances of infection — plague her. She worries about a wound on her left middle finger, a slit in the skin she can’t let heal. Picking at the sore relieves her obsessive thought spirals, but it also activates a new round of worries about contamination, disease and the impossibility of safety.
Aza, played by Isabela Merced (Madame Web) has anxiety and Ocd, conditions that make the already challenging experience of high school even more difficult. Turtles All the Way Down, which Marks (Don’t Make Me Go) adapted from John Green’s novel of the same name, is a mostly moving portrait of how one teenager navigates her mind’s unruly terrain.

One of our favorite fellows competing on “The Masked Singer” season 11 is disguised as the Gumball. It became clear quite quickly that this contender is someone who has made his living by raising his voice in song.

Perhaps you've had this experience:
You hear about an interesting movie or show, or you remember an old favorite, and you reason that since it's a well-known title, it's several years old, and you subscribe to several streaming services, you should be able to watch it for free somewhere.
Then you conduct the research that's necessary to find anything in the vast streaming landscape, and you realize that you're gonna have to shell out to rent or buy this thing.
Or worse, that film or series simply is not available. Anywhere.
If you're lucky, you can go on Amazon and have the DVD delivered in a couple of days, but you haven't seen your DVD player since Obama was in office, and you need something to watch now.
From comedy classics like Cocoon to Oscar winners like Il Postino to beloved children's movies like The Brave Little Toaster to action...

Percy Jackson and the Olympians has been doing phenomenal numbers for Disney+ with 110 million hours streamed as of Feb. 7, according to a press release. Fans of this beloved Rick Riordan book series have been waiting nearly two decades for a worthwhile adaptation, and thanks to Riordan’s involvement and an immense amount of care from the cast and crew, Disney+ seems to have struck gold with this franchise.
However, Percy Jackson and the Olympians isn’t the only mythology-based middle grade book series that Rick Riordan has written. Some significant changes are on the horizon for Gac Family, and it’s good news for Candace Cameron Bure fans who miss her in mystery roles like Aurora Teagarden Mysteries.
As you’ll recall, Bure’s Hallmark exit ended her tenure in the mystery movie franchise.
Bure took on a pivotal role at Gac Family, one of Hallmark’s biggest competitors.
Deadline revealed Tuesday Gac Family that it will launch its first-ever mystery movie franchise, and the title is pretty self-indulgent.
Great American Mysteries is the name.
As for the first title in the new strand of movies:

The runaway success of Suits on Netflix in 2023 gave the show the biggest year ever in the short history of streaming viewing measurement. It also headlined a banner year for library series (aka shows that ended their run years ago) across a number of platforms: The top 10 overall titles in Nielsen’s year-end rankings are all acquired shows, the first time that’s happened in the four years streaming rankings have been publicly available.
Viewers spent a lot more time on streaming platforms last year than the year before — streaming use rose by 21 percent, according to Nielsen — and licensed shows are responsible for a lot of that increased time. The top 10 original streaming series last year combined drove 133.6 billion minutes of viewing, accounting for about two-thirds of 2022’s top 10 original shows (198.3 billion minutes). Virgin River fans are in for a long wait. Netflix has revealed its 2024 TV slate, and unfortunately, the romantic drama is nowhere to be found. Season 6 of the show probably won’t arrive on the streamer until 2025.

Unfortunately, Ginny and Georgia appears to be far from its Season 3 release on Netflix.
Officially given the green light for a third season in May 2023, Ginny and Georgia looks to continue its reign as one of Netflix's most popular comedies after Season 2 arrived in January 2023.
In mid-December 2023, creator Sarah Lambert shared on social media she was "[really] excited for Season 3," although that did not reveal a release timeframe even though development seemingly started.

Netflix has unveiled the slate of TV series set to release new seasons in 2024, and some of the streamer’s biggest series are not on the list, delayed by the writers and actors strikes.
Stranger Things‘ fifth and final season, which just started production earlier this month, will not debut until 2025, making for a three-year gap between both Seasons 3 and 4 (due to the pandemic) and Seasons 4 and 5.
Given the extensive VFX work involved in the series, which was originally slated to start filming Season 5 in May, the delay is not surprising.
Ditto for the series that dethroned Stranger Things as Netflix’s most popular series, Wednesday, which is not scheduled to begin production on Season 2 until late April in a new location, Ireland, and breakout new 2023 drama One Piece, which also is yet to start filming on its second season.

In a report analyzing TV viewership in the U.S. throughout 2023, Nielsen found that “Suits” beat a record previously held by “The Office” for number of minutes watched in a single year.
The legal drama racked up 57.7 billion total minutes watched in 2023, putting it just ahead of the 57.1 billion minutes of viewership accumulated by “The Office” in 2020. When comparing total time watched, though, projects with more episodes and/or longer episodes stand at an obvious advantage. The entirety of “Suits” runs for about 83 hours, which would mean it had an easier time reaching that 57 billion-minute mark than “The Office” did with about 73 hours of content.
Still, both the old record and the new one speak to Netflix’s ubiquity in the streaming landscape. “The Office” aired its final episode on NBC in 2013 but continued to reach a huge audience until it was removed from Netflix at the start of 2021 and...

When you see your favorite actors pick up their 2023 Screen Actors Guild Awards on Feb. 26 via Netflix’s YouTube channel, you might not be thinking much about the statue itself. After decades of award shows — and their corresponding acceptance speeches — the motion of hoisting up some newly bestowed hardware just comes with the territory. But, after witnessing the actual creation of the actor statue, Ginny & Georgia star Antonia Gentry will never take that for granted again.
“I’m obsessed with it now. It felt like I was watching The Lord of the Rings’ One Ring being forged,” Gentry tells Tudum on an early weekday morning leading up to the awards show. In the battle between British pop stars Ed Sheeran and Sam Ryder — both nominated for Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso — it was Grammy winner Sheeran who walked away with the Emmy for Outstanding Music and Lyrics.
This was the first Emmy nomination and first win for the “Perfect” and “Shape of You” singer-songwriter, who was not present at the Creative Emmy Awards Saturday to accept the statuette. He shared the award with his song co-writing team, prolific hitmaker Max Martin and Foy Vance.
The trio’s Emmy-winning song, “A Beautiful Game”, was featured in the Ted Lasso finale “So Long, Farewell.”
The other nominated song from Season 3 of Ted Lasso was “Fought & Lost”, co-written and performed by Ryder. The category also included original songs from Netflix’s Ginny & Georgia, Showtime’s The L Word: Generation Q, Prime Video’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel as well as Roku’s Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.

How do you measure a year? At IndieWire, it’s in shows streamed and movies watched; every year we get to December and find ourselves exclaiming “That came out this year?!” while measuring the year’s cultural highs and lows through what we consumed on-screen.
In 2023 alone, Netflix premiered more “Ginny & Georgia” and “Firefly Lane,” Emmy hopefuls “Beef” and “The Diplomat,” the heartfelt conclusions of “Never Have I Ever” and “Sex Education,” as well as breakout hits like “The Night Agent,” “One Piece,” and “Wednesday.” It was the year of Joe Goldberg taking London in “You” Season 4, of spinoffs “Queen Charlotte” and “Xo, Kitty,” of “The Witcher” switching leads and “The Crown” ending its reign. Many of those titles, while expected, didn’t even have public release dates at the beginning of the year.

New insights are still being unearthed after Netflix dumped the viewership data for nearly its entire catalog from the first half of 2023, which includes more than 18,000 titles.
One of those observations is that young adult and female-centric content are doing especially well for the streamer. In fact, though The Night Agent is ranked No. 1 in terms of hours viewed, that’s really only because the data separates individual seasons of a series. Ginny & Georgia was actually the most-watched title from January to June on Netflix, with a combined 967.2M hours viewed between Seasons 1 and 2.
Season 2 of Ginny & Georgia debuted on January 5, and it alone racked up 665.1M hours viewed.
Season 1 tallied 302.1M (aka 30M “views”), likely reinvigorated by those catching up before watching the new episodes, as well as audiences who were introduced to the title for the first time.

Coming-of-age movies and television shows are an interesting genre. It allows the audience of every age group to come to terms with the current milieu and prepare their minds for the fact that every generation has a different mindset. One just needs to accept and understand it. Sex Education, Derry Girls, Never Have I Ever, and Ginny and Georgia are some of the shows that tackle the coming-of-age genre. A lot could be imbibed from these stories that are about a particular generation and their manner of dealing with issues at hand. Cindy la Regia: The High School Years is a new Mexican Netflix original show that deals with a bunch of teenage girls and boys dealing with life as high school students. As we wrap up our year-end coverage, IndieWire looks back at the people, projects, and ideas that defined 2023 — and what’s coming next.
I miss the days when Hollywood believed a great TV show could sustain an entire network. You know, back when television was still growing, and rising brands were built around groundbreaking, widely respected original programs. Netflix Metrics The Glory
Data dump: Since its inception — and especially since it became an original content player — Netflix has wrestled with releasing viewing data publicly. This week, its improving levels of transparency reached new heights with the release of What We Watched, a global report on 18,000+ titles from its library (equating to 99% of its catalog) covering the first six months of 2023. Data transparency was one of the key issues in the WGA and SAG-AFTRA contract negotiations, and while these new semi-annual reports aren’t the full picture, they provide insight deeper than anything released before. Katie Campione’s extensive analysis, on everything from data to the timing of the release, is well worth a read here.

Netflix released a huge amount of streaming data Tuesday — viewing totals for more than 18,000 movies and seasons of TV for the first half of 2023.
Taken as a whole, it’s almost an overwhelming amount of information that speaks to Netflix’s ability to engage its huge subscriber base (just under 239 million for the end of the period covered in the data dump) — and maybe not a ton more? The stats presented are for total hours viewed, which is how Netflix measures engagement across its portfolio — but it’s also not the metric the streamer uses to order its weekly top 10 lists. For those, it uses the “view” formula of total watch time divided by running time, which somewhat levels the playing field for films and series with shorter run times. (And there are, of course, economic factors and other metrics that influence decision-making that the company will continue to keep in house.
