General Sam Lane is at the site of a nuclear reactor that is about to explode and spread fallout. Sam calls Superman on a pager, and Superman flies up and seals the breach using his heat vision. He then freezes the nearby water in the harbor, creating a giant block of ice. Superman lifts the ice out of the water. He pouts the ice into the cooling tower to cool down the reactor.
Superman lands outside and the crowd gathered applauds. He talks to Sam, who says that the cooling tower had the same crack as the one at Oyster Creek, Neither man knows how no one saw the crack at either plant. Sam asks about his daughter, Lois, and says that soon he'll take Jonathan and maybe Jordan fishing.
Superman flies home, and Lois is working on a story. Clark switches out of his costume, and Lois tells him to apologize to Jordan because he missed therapy. Lois leaves for the office to deliver some copy, and Clark goes up to Jonathan's room. Jonathan says that he's starting QB for varsity, and some of the seniors are ticked off because he's the first freshman to make the position.
Clark excuses himself since Jonathan is skyping with his girlfriend, Eliza. Going to Jordan's room, Clark finds Jordan playing a Superman videogame. Clark apologizes for missing Jordan's therapy, and asks his son if he's nervous about his first day in high school. Jordan isn't interested in talking, and Clark leaves.
In the hallway, Clark checks his phone and discovers that Martha called. He called his mother back and she says that he should be around his family more so his sons can see what a strong father he is. Clark says that he's trying, and asks if it was as hard for his parents. Martha says that things are more complicated for them, and she clutches briefly at her chest but says that there's no problem.
The next day, Clark is making breakfast for Jonathan. Jonathan complains that they might go to Smallville to visit Martha, and then criticizes Jordan's clothing as his brother prepares to go to school on their first day. Once they leave, Lois figures that Clark is worried about Jordan. They wonder if their sons have power, and Lois suspects Jordan does. Clark figures that it's too dangerous for their sons to know that Clark really is.
Clark and Lois go to the Planet, and discuss their sons and how Sam agrees with Clark. When they come in, they find out that there have been more layoffs since Morgan Edge bought the paper.
Soon, Foswell fires Clark. Lois is unhappy with his being fired and that Foswell is a patsy for Morgan. She says that Clark has no excuse for being away so much. Dr. Frye calls Clark, who speeds to his family farm outside Smallville. A neighbor is there, and tells Clark that Martha had a stroke. Clark goes to Martha's room and cries as he sees his mother's body, lying in her bed.
Later, everyone gathers for the funeral. Lois comforts Clark as best she can. At the wake outside, Jonathan tells Jordan to take his pill. Meanwhile, a neighbor says it's hard for family farmers in Smallville. Sarah Cushing arrives with her parents and younger sister, and Jonathan points Sarah out to Jordan.
Sarah's mother, Lana Lang, greets Clark and Lois. Their father, Kyle, introduces their younger daughter Sophie and Sarah. Jordan and Jonathan come over, and Sophie says that Lana dated Clark in high school and that's why Kyle got mad when he saw Clark on her Facebook page. Once the adults leave, Jordan and Jonathan talk with Sarah. Jordan mentions that the router for the wireless is in the barn, but Clark doesn't like them going into the barn. Sarah goes to turn on the router.
In the house, the Kents and Cushings have beers. Kyle says that people don't come back to the community to use the skills they acquired, and glances at Clark. Then they mention Morgan, who is retrofitting the coal mines to produce alternative energies. Lois says that Morgan ruins anything he touches, like the Planet. Kyle says that people stopped reading the paper because the reporters couldn't keep their politics out of their stories.
Lois says that Morgan busts unions. Kyle says that she doesn't have to live there, and that Morgan has already made a decisions about the Kent farm. He leaves, and Lana says that Martha had some business with the bank where Lana works and Clark should come by the next day.
The teenagers go into the barn, and Jonathan says that they might need someone to show them around. She asks for Jordan's phone, and she brings up a local schedule and tells Jordan that she'll take him and jokingly says she might get him into a little bit of trouble. Jonathan finds the router in the loft, and Jordan climbs up to turn it on.
In the house, Clark asks Lois if Kyle was right and he should have come back to Smallville more often. Lois says that Martha knew where Clark was, and Clark says that with his super-hearing he heard Martha telling him to come home... but he doesn't know way.
Up in the loft, Jordan attempts turn on the router and falls. A rack of pipes fall on him, and Jonathan shelters his brother with his body.
Sarah runs out and calls for help, and Clark runs into the barn and uses his x-ray vision to find his sons. As Lois runs in, Clark tosses a pipe away and they find their sons, unharmed. That night, Clark and Lois call in Benny, a local EMT. Benny determines that the boys only have mild concussions. Once Benny leaves, Lois sends the boys upstairs to their bedroom.
In their bedroom, Jonathan gets a text saying he might be out as QB because he missed practice all week. Jordan wonders how they're fine, but Jonathan doesn't worry about it. He confirms that Jordan send an emoji to Sarah, and Jordan figures that they need to find out what really happened to them in the barn.
Lois finds Clark out on the porch and says that their sons need to know the truth. Clark isn't convinced, and Lois admits that it will be hard for Jonathan but he'll have his family. Clark is worried that his son will pull way even further from him, and Lois points out that everyone's life have problem. Clark hears Sam approaching, and he shows Clark security footage of someone moving at superspeed at both reactors. They discovered Kryptonian writing: "You are not a hero, Kal-El".
When Sam suggests that Clark suit up, Lois overhears them and says that it's not a moment that Clark can just fly off. His family needs him more. Sam agrees with his daughter, tells Lois that he tried to warn her that Superman doesn't get to have a normal life, and leaves.
The next day at the bank, Clark and Lois meet with Lana. Lana talks about how and her high school friend Pete were coming back from a concert, and they had a car wreck but weren't harmed. She then explains that Martha took a second mortgage on a farm to help neighbors. If the Kents can't repay the loan, they can accept a buyout for the property.
Jonathan and Jordan go to the barn to see what Clark is hiding from them. Jordan looks for something out of place and finds a hidden cellar beneath the floor. The two teenagers go down and find Clark's Kryptonian spacecraft. When Jordan touches it, a wave of energy ripples out. He touches it again and a spot glows on the hull.
Clark and Lois drive back to the farm, and Clark talks about how all his memories are all there. He wonders why Martha wanted him to come home, and Lois figures that Martha wanted Clark to save the farm. Clark points out that they don't have a lot of cash, and Lois thinks there's something phony about the loans.
Jonathan and Jordan come out of the barn and accuse Clark to lying to them. He admits that he lied to them, and says that the spaceship brought him to Earth. Clark explains that he came from Krypton, and the teenagers' grandparents raised him and taught him to believe them. Clark removes his glasses to show them that he's Superman, then goes over to their truck and flies into the air with it. Jordan understands all of the excuses, and how Clark and Lois lied. Clark says that he didn't want them to know because of the possible burden, and they admit that they thought Jonathan has at least some of Clark's powers. Jordan angrily walk away, saying that Clark wasn't sent there to be a father. Jonathan goes with his brother, telling Clark to leave them alone.
Later, Clark asks Lois if he's a bad father. Lois tells him that his life falling apart just makes him human. Clark hears a breach at another nuclear reactor, and Lois tells him to go,. Superman flies there, and the Stranger says that he's hiding behind lead encasements so that Superman can't see him with his x-ray vision.
Jordan goes to the part at the mine and meets Sarah. She warns him that they party a little differently in Smallville.
At the reactor, the Stranger says that they share history. His world was also destroyed and he came to Earth as well. Clark sees the Stranger and flies at him with superposed. The Stranger grabs him and throw him away, and flies out of the reactor.
The partying teenagers fire off fireworks, and Sarah sees Jordan getting some beer. She says that a lot of people are on something, and Sarah finally tells him that a lot of people in Smallville getting sad. People don't want to talk about things, like her father Kyle is a firefighter. A year ago, Sarah took some of Lana's pills and Lana found out, and made a big deal out of her. When Sarah says that it's pretty basic, Jordan tells her that it isn't and kisses her.
Sarah pulls away and asks Jordan what he's doing. Another boy, Sean, comes over and shoves Jordan to the ground. Jonathan comes over and pushes Sean away, telling him to get out of his face. A fight breaks out, with Sean beating Jonathan and Sean's friends beating Jordan.
Superman chases the Stranger across the planet toward Metropolis and into it. The Stranger circles back and knocks Superman to the street. Superman flies up above the city, and the Stranger smashes into him and beats him. The Stranger says that Superman was just desperate for the love of people that would never accept him. He draws a dagger made of green Kryptonite and prepares to stab Superman.
Heat vision flares out of Jordan's eyes, and he sets a nearby truck on fire.
The Stranger plunges the dagger into Superman's chest, and Superman plummets to the earth below.
At the Kent farmhouse, Lois is calling HUD when she sees a report about Superman's fight on TV.
Superman plummets to Earth, remembering his past and Martha calling to him. He pulls the dagger out of his chest and breaks his fall just in time. Superman hears Lois calling him and flies to Smallville. He sees the firefighters at the party site, finds Jonathan, and they hug. Kyle says that they found Jordan, and Clark thanks Kyle.
Back at the farmhouse, Jordan says that he's the one who saved Jordan, and he felt his powers for the first time when the pipes fell on him. Clark warns that Jordan's powers are manifesting differently than his. Jordan goes to his bedroom and Jonathan walks out. Once they're alone, Clark tells Lois that he should have told their sons a long time ago about his origins. Lois says that they have to be on the same page going forward, and Clark figures that Martha wanted him to come home to have a simpler life with each other on the farm. They both agree that it would be a huge change, but Lois agrees with Martha. Relived, Clark kisses his wife.
Clark finds Jordan out on the porch, and talks about how his father suddenly became a father. Jonathan had no idea what he was doing, but it didn't matter because he was always there for Clark. Clark tells Jordan that he hasn't always been there for him, and promises that from now on he will be.
The next day, Lana shows Clark and Lois the deal she got them. Clark tells her that they're keeping the farm, and Lois asks Lana if she knew that a company belonging to Morgan bought her bank a few months back. None of them know why Morgan would be interested in Kansas farms.
Sarah meets with Jordan and Jonathan, and tells them the nobody got hurt in the explosion and her father believes a methane pocket from the mine exploded. Jordan apologizes for kissing Sarah, and Jonathan walks off and Sarah says that it wasn't Jordan's fault. She just wanted to hang out with him, and figures that if Jordan had issues then she couldn't be so bad. Jordan says that they both might be a little messed up, and Sarah asks him to keep her pill abuse a secret. The boy agrees, and Sarah leaves with her mother.
Jordan goes over to Jonathan, and Jordan says that powers are overrated. Jonathan is happy that it proves his skills on the field are natural.
Back in the farmhouse, Clark asks his sons if it's okay if they stay at the farm permanently. They'll discuss it completely at family dinner that night. Until then, Clark is going to show them how to farm.
The Stranger goes to his spaceship in the Arctic. He says that he'll need upgrades to his armor, and his ship's AI says that they'll need more Kryptonite and calls the Stranger "Captain Luthor".
