Sean Penn’s “Flag Day,” Leos Carax’s “Annette,” starring Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard, and Wes Anderson’s “The French Dispatch,” with Frances McDormand and Timothée Chalamet, will provide star power at a 2021 Cannes Festival packed to overflowing with established and very often new European and world cinema arthouse talent.
The festival films will also drive much of Cannes’ business. Cannes’ business behemoth, a pre-sales market unveiling big indie projects — such as this year’s $60 million Vin Diesel vehicle “Muscle” — took place June 21-25 at the virtual Pre-Cannes Screenings.
“In some ways, Cannes this year has the opportunity to be the purest form of itself,” said Dylan Leiner at Sony Pictures Classics.
“Since the market was held virtually a couple of weeks before, festivalgoers will be able to focus on the programmed films almost exclusively without the distraction of a physical market, which so often favors splashy, large scale packages that grab headlines,...

Paris-based company Indie Sales has boarded Vincent Le Port’s debut feature “Bruno Reidal — Confession of a Murder,” which is set to world premiere in competition at Cannes’ Critics’ Week, the festival’s parallel strand dedicated to first and second films.

Howard’s End, the limited series based on the E.M. Forster novel that is set to air on BBC and Starz, released a photo so that people finally have something to ground their potential excitement. While a first look release is never quite the sensation some may hope, in this case, it’s good to get something moving on this one just to get past the lingering effect of the good/bad news of Hayley Atwell‘s attachment to the project, which helped killed her fans’ hopes of Agent Carter revival.
The image shows Atwell (Margaret Schlegel) and Matthew Macfadyen (Henry Wilcox) at Simpson’s-in-the-Strand restaurant.
It’s hard to believe just how long it’s been since the now classic Anthony Hopkins/Emma Thompson version of the story, and if getting another take on the story isn’t enough, this one comes as Kenneth Lonergan‘s first television adaptation.

A survey conducted for HomeGoods stores revealed that Ellen DeGeneres is Americans’ ideal guest at a holiday cocktail party, a December vacation with George Clooney at his Italian residence would be bellissimo, and Michelle Obama is the top choice to decorate a Christmas tree. Well, I hate to be a Cold Miser, but Ellen, George, and Michelle just checked their calendars, and they already have plans on the day of your event/trip. Whenever that is. They’re booked. But thanks for asking.
Since there’s no chance that an actual celebrity will drop in on you over the holidays,...

The 3rd annual Portland Oregon Women’s Film Festival (Pow!) has announced their full festival lineup, which includes 44 films from all over the world. The fest will run March 18-21 at the Hollywood Theatre.
Maybe this year, the Pow! fest will have something extra to celebrate if Kathryn Bigelow wins the Best Directing Academy Award on March 7th. Bigelow is the odds on favorite to take home the Oscar statuette this year for directing The Hurt Locker and, if she does, she’d be the first woman ever to do so. Actually, only four women have ever even been nominated: Bigelow, Lina Wertmuller, Jane Campion and Sofia Coppola.
The lineup below proves that women are a powerful force sitting in the director’s chair and Pow! has assembled an impressive lineup of animated films, shorts, features, documentaries, experimental films and more:

Traditionally, the desert city has been synonymous - both on screen and off - with sin, tragedy and despair. But as this year's smash comedy The Hangover, now out on DVD, highlighted, it's increasingly an arena for a new, Disneyfied version of vice. Paul MacInnes reports
There are lots of tigers in Las Vegas. But, try as you might, it's hard to coax one back to your hotel room. Mainly, they live in zoos; zoos like the one in the Mirage Hotel that's named after Siegfried & Roy, the German-born magicians who became inextricably linked to the beasts after a seven-year-old called Montecore bit Roy on the neck. Sometimes the tigers live in private homes. But, either way, they're not for hire. And you try lifting one out of its cage.
The sight of a roaring tiger in a bathroom at Caesar's Palace is one of the most memorable moments in The Hangover,...

Editor’S Note: This is one of several interviews, conducted via email, with directors whose films are screening at the 2009 Tribeca Film Festival. “Playground” (Discovery) Director: Libby Spears Synopsis: Sexual exploitation of children is a problem that we tend to relegate to back-alley brothels in developing countries, the province of a particularly inhuman, and invariably foreign, criminal element. Such is the initial premise of Libby Spears’ sensitive investigation into the topic. …...
