Netflix is bringing Squid Game 2 to Lucca.
Squid Game creator/writer/director Hwang Dong-hyuk, along with stars Lee Jung-jae and Wi Ha-Joon, will preview the hotly anticipated second season of the smash-hit Korean thriller series at this year’s Lucca Comics & Games, Europe’s No. 1 comics and gaming convention, which runs in the medieval city of Lucca in central Italy from Oct. 30-Nov. 3. The second season will bow later this year.
Netflix is keeping mum about the event in Lucca on Oct. 31. But given that Squid Game is the most popular series ever on the streamer, it stands to reason that interest will be high.
Lucca on Wednesday announced other highlights of this year’s convention, which include special celebrations for the 50th anniversary of fantasy roleplaying game Dungeons & Dragons, the 40th anniversary of the pioneering computer game Tetris, and the 25th anniversary of iconic Japanese manga One Piece...

The Mediterrane Film Festival kickstarted its second edition with the international premiere of Alexandre de La Patellière and Matthieu Delaporte’s “The Count of Monte Cristo.”
The film, shown at the heart of Malta’s capital of Valletta on Saturday night, was followed by a reception at the historic Mdina Ditch Gardens, in which Malta Film Commissioner Johann Grech highlighted the importance of the festival as an event to “unite the nations of the Mediterranean through film.”
The sentiment echoes this year’s festival theme of Unity Through Film, with Grech adding that he hopes the festival will bring nations together to “share stories that celebrate not only our diversity but also our shared outlook.” The film commissioner emphasised the success of the festival’s first edition, claiming the return to the local economy “far exceeded our investment, showing once again what a force for good film is in our country.

There are a lot of reasons why a video game console can fail. Bad marketing, outdated technology, excessive price, lack of third-party titles, the impact of solid competition, and so on. So many factors go into the existence of these devices and so much can go wrong. Even Nintendo has stumbled so hard that their faulty decisions occasionally leave radioactive footprints in video gaming history.
Not every console can be a major success story, but no console is truly without value. Well, maybe the Mattel HyperScan…but other than that! Every failed console has at least something worth checking out. Hell, the Sega Dreamcast had Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and SoulCalibur and it was still the death knell for Sega making hardware!
So here are some of the best games to come from game systems that fell flat.
Ms. Pac-Man for Atari 5200 (1983)
The Atari 5200 was a console that just wasn’t worth the jump forward.

There has been a lot of talk lately about video game system sellers lately. With the industry seemingly gradually moving away from the cutthroat era of true exclusives, the topic of those killer apps that made consoles and handhelds must-have items feels both pressing and a relic of an increasingly different time. In all those discussions, though, one thing remains constant. Nobody can seem to agree on what a true system-selling video game is.
It’s not hard to understand why. The game that made you buy a console may not be the same game that inspired someone else to buy a console. It’s an interesting social phenomenon. On the one hand, video game system sellers are so common that anyone could apply that tag to just about any game ever made. On the other hand, true system sellers (the games that demonstrably led to a notable increase in...

People have created bridges, castles, and even the Eiffel Tower in the popular sandbox game Minecraft. Fans are even inclined to create another Earth in the game. Hopefully, they’ll beat Nvidia’s Earth 2 before it goes mainstream. But that’s not even close to the creations that can leave any viewer’s jaw dropping.
A video game inside a video game sounds interesting. And a classic video game like Tetris inside Minecraft takes the thrill off the charts. Someone who might’ve become bored and wanted to do something interesting in the pixelated game created the classic game, first developed by Alexey Pajitnov in 1985. And the results are just mesmerizing.

The best-selling Nintendo console of all time isn’t a home console like the Wii or Switch, but the Nintendo DS. Nintendo’s handheld consoles make up a vital part of its history, providing the video game industry with a number of technical innovations, introducing their own beloved video game properties, and helping keep Nintendo alive and relevant during periods when its home consoles were floundering against their competitors.
Simply put, the Nintendo we know today wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for the Game Boy and its successors over the subsequent decades. With 2024 marking the 35th anniversary of the Game Boy, here is a look back at the creation of the Game Boy, how its seismic impact fits into the wider legacy of Nintendo overall, and the importance of Nintendo’s handheld console line in the video game industry.

Quality and success do not always go hand in hand. Sometimes a fantastic movie will bomb at the box office. Sometimes a great TV series does not get picked up for a second season. Sometimes a beautiful music album will fall under the radar. Just because something is deemed a failure does not mean it wasn’t worth looking at. Such is the story of the PC Engine, otherwise known as the TurboGrafx-16. While it did well in Japan, its attempt to get a share of the North American market crashed and burned.
It wasn’t even the fault of the console’s performance. Sure, the controller was a bit lame, and the system needed better third-party support, but what was there was usually pretty damn good. Its successor, GTA 6, is still under development and is said to be coming at some point next year. Hollywood’s recent predilection for depicting the invention of particular products has, so far, relied on demonstrating the gravitas of said product’s eventual existence: Nike’s Air Jordans in Air; the dawn of the smartphone in BlackBerry; Tetris in, well, Tetris. Unfrosted, Jerry Seinfeld’s Pop-Tarts movie takes the opposite approach. It is, by design, extremely silly — an exaggerated parody of those tropes that ascribes history-altering importance to the creation of a fruit-goo-filled rectangle. For kids, Unfrosted argues, the arrival of the Pop-Tart was the most seismic cultural event of the ’60s; Seinfeld himself was one of those kids.

For years various producers have pitched doing something like a zany It’s A Mad Mad Mad Mad World, only populated by an epic cast of contemporary comedy stars just like that Stanley Kramer supercomedy did during its time in 1963. So it is probably not a coincidence that Jerry Seinfeld selected that very year in which to set his live action filmmaking debut, Unfrosted, as a quadruple threat of star, director, co-writer, producer.
Placing it in Battle Creek, Michigan and taking the real life story of the rivalry of cereal kingpins Kellogg’s and Post in their race to create a revolutionary breakfast pastry, Seinfeld and his longtime writing partner Spike Feresten, along with their Bee Movie collaborators Andy Rubin & Barry Marder, have chosen to use some real life people, made up several others, salted it all with some basic truths, and basically let the laughs and comedy lead the way in the telling.

35 years ago, Nintendo gifted gamers everywhere with the Game Boy. After helping rescue the struggling home console market with the Nes, Nintendo made the bold decision to try to pursue the dream of playing high-quality games on the go. Against considerable odds, they quickly showed that true handheld gaming was no longer just a neat idea or occasional distraction. The Game Boy would go on to revolutionize the handheld gaming scene in ways that are still being felt today.
For as incredible as the design of the Game Boy hardware was (at least relative to its time), the device obviously wouldn’t have made it far if it wasn’t for the quality of its exclusive games. We all got to see the release of some hit video games this year. From Palworld to Helldivers 2, 2024 started on a great note for the players. This year also saw the release of some highly-anticipated titles like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, and Tekken 8. However, one common thing with most of these games coming out today is their high development budget.
Helldivers 2 is a video game which was released this year
Video games these days cost a fortune, from its development cost to its marketing cost. Even though this is true for many, some have defied the odds. Below is a list of games, that had a low development budget, however, they managed to surprise everyone with their sales.
Hollow Knight (more than 2.8 million copies sold)

In the past two decades, video games have drastically changed. With new generations of consoles, video games have improved a lot and have made a lot of money for the studios. When talking about the highest-selling video games in the last decade (2010-2020), one may assume that Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto 5 took the crown, however, there is one game that put GTA 5 in the second position.
Minecraft is the highest-selling video game of all time
Mojang Studios’ 2011 sandbox game, Minecraft, is the highest-selling video game of all time with a whopping 300 million sales since its release. Thanks to a multi-platform release, Minecraft catered to all kinds of gamers, providing them with a fun co-op survival experience. Not even games like Tetris, Pubg, or Mario Kart could dethrone Minecraft. With 300 million copies sold, Minecraft is expected to hold this spot for a very long time as the game continues to sell copies.

Hollywood has been obsessed with biopics for what seems like forever, but it's hard not to admit that our current film landscape is reaching critical mass with movies about famous people. I guess when they've run out of recognizable IP, they've gotta center stories about recognizable faces instead. Last year alone we saw "Maestro," "The Iron Claw," "Napoleon," "Ferrari," "Nyad," "Priscilla," and "Big George Forman," not to mention brand movies like "Blackberry," "Tetris," "Air," and "Barbie." And then, of course, there's "Oppenheimer," which not only took home seven Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director, but also became the highest-grossing biopic of all time. No shade to our boy Oppy, but it seems like a new film from Antoine Fuqua is coming for that title and the fact it's a movie about the most famous musical performer to ever live certainly gives the project a leg up on the father of the atomic bomb.

Action role-playing games have been around for a while now and two studios have mastered the art of making these video games: FromSoftware and Bethesda Game Studios. The battle between Coca-Cola and Pepsi is heading to cinemas, as Sony pays seven figures for movie pitch on the subject.
As Hollywood’s tectonic plates continue to rearrange themselves in the wake of a disruptive few years, one type of film that seems to be rising to prominence is that of the product movie. In the last year or so we’ve seen Tetris, Air, Flamin’ Hot (the Cheetos origin story) and Barbie all land with varying degrees of impact upon our shared cultural consciousness.
Obviously, Barbie is something of a special case, distinguishable from the other films as it treats its product in an entirely distinct fashion and found great success doing so. The other films on that list told a more straightforward story about the origin of an iconic product and as we’ve already predicted, they won’t be the last to do so.

Despite being significantly hit by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes in 2023, U.K. film studios and production facilities are looking to pick back up where they left off after a record-breaking year for film and high-end television production spend in 2022.
When asked what the industry can expect in terms of business in the year ahead, Samantha Perahia, head of production U.K. at the British Film Commission, says she feels positive that demand “is going to be ramping up.”
She continues, “We already know that some of our studio facilities in the U.K. are getting very busy. While not every facility in the U.K. is jampacked again, there seems to be some momentum now, which is very welcome.”
The production spend in the U.K. jumped from £726 million ($376 million) in 2016 to $7.8 billion in 2022. At the same time, the U.K. considerably expanded its studio and stage provision to...

Aaron Taylor-Johnson set to star in bank heist film, Fuze, from Outlaw King director David Mackenzie
Aaron Taylor-Johnson has been spending the last couple of years trying to avoid James Bond questions since it was said he was testing for the new role. The Bullet Train star stated, “I just focus on the things I can have in my hands right now. What’s in front of me right now.“ What’s in front of him is his next go at comic book movies with the Spider-man-related film, Kraven The Hunter. The Sony film, made in association with Marvel, was originally set to release last year. However, the strikes would delay the movie to late this summer on August 30, 2024.
While we wait to see what happens on the James Bond front, Taylor-Johnson has lined up a new project that will reunite him with his Outlaw King director, David Mackenzie. The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Taylor-Johnson will be starring in Fuze, a bank heist movie with a bit of a twist.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson has found his next role in David Mackenzie’s heist thriller “Fuze,” which Anton will launch at the European Film Market in Berlin this month.
The film reunites Taylor-Johnson and “Hell or High Water” helmer Mackenzie, who last worked together on 2018’s “Outlaw King.” With a script from Ben Hopkins, “Fuze” “opens on the discovery of an unexploded World War II bomb in a London construction site, sparking a mass evacuation – the perfect cover for a heist,” according to the film’s synopsis.
Taylor-Johnson’s stacked project lineup currently includes the headlining role in Marvel’s “Kraven and the Hunter,” due out in August; “The Fall Guy” alongside Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt; and Robert Eggers’ highly anticipated “Nosferatu.” Mackenzie’s 2016 neo-Western “Hell or High Water” scored four Oscar noms, including best picture, and he’s also set to direct “Relay” starring Lily James, Riz Ahmed and Sam Worthington.

Apple TV+ series “Masters of the Air” is the third collaboration from the team behind HBO’s “Band of Brothers” and “The Pacific.” Trio Tom Hanks, Gary Goetzman and Steven Spielberg produced the nine-part World War II epic series, which spotlights the men who fought in the 8th Air Force, specifically the men of the 100th Bomb Group. The vivid and vital story finds roots in the book of the same name by Donald L. Miller.
The crew of a typical Eighth Air Force heavy bomber plane included ten men — a pilot and his co-pilot flying the B17, the navigator and the bombardier in the machine’s nose, the flight engineer behind the pilot, the radio operator, two waist gunners, a ball turret gunner and a tail gunner. Not to mention the men who strategized from the bases, the plane engineers and Tuskegee airmen or Royal Airforce pilots who feature in this story.

Following in the footsteps of Band of Brothers and The Pacific, Masters of the Air is the third entry into a collection of epic World War II limited series from producers Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg. Like its “Brothers” before it, Masters of the Air also features a massive cast. And we mean like … massive.
Masters of the Air‘s Wikipedia page reveals that more than 60 actors are credited in this nine-episode Apple TV+ series. Employing that many speaking roles makes sense, of course, as the Allies’ efforts to defeat Hitler and the Axis in WWII required quite a bit of manpower. It’s only nature that any miniseries telling that story would try to capture the scale of it all.
Series producer Gary Goetzman credits casting director Lucy Bevan with getting the impressive cadre of actors together.
“[Casting] had to be done on Zoom basically because it was during Covid.

Whenever awards season comes around, we start to see a lot of the same movies appear on Top 10 lists from critics or in the roster of nominees from the many Hollywood organizations that vote on year-end cinematic greatness. Whether they're critics circles from around the country, the various guilds for writers, directors, producers, actors, and other filmmaking departments, or the big show from the Academy Awards, there are always a handful of titles that garner attention across the board.
Some would have you believe this happens because critics and members of Hollywood at large are afraid to go against the grain and adopt a groupthink mentality, which is a big reason why so many general audiences see Rotten Tomatoes as more of an entity representative of all critics as opposed to a review aggregator trying to generalize many voices. But perhaps it's because groups of seasoned filmgoers come to recognize...

Film historians will inevitably look back on 2023 as a year of risk-taking, with filmmakers turning to personal projects backed by major studios. On paper and in hindsight, a movie about the world’s most iconic doll sounds obvious, but it took real balls—or a lack thereof in Ken’s case—for Mattel and Warner Bros. to get behind a deconstructed look at the toy in Greta Gerwig’s existential Barbie. Universal arguably took an even bigger risk, putting their full force behind a three hour movie about the birth of the atomic bomb. Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer proved perfect counter-programming to Gerwig’s Barbie, as moviegoers championed the double act into the summer box office unicorn Barbenheimer. Martin Scorsese brought his American Western crime epic Killers of the Flower Moon to the screen after seven years of development. Emerald Fennell debuted her second directorial effort, the darkly imaginative and highly divisive Saltburn.

The British Academy has unveiled the results of the first round of voting across all 24 categories for the 2024 BAFTA Film Awards, with a perhaps unsurprising trio of films at the top.
The cultural phenomenon that was “Barbenheimer” has continued to smash its way into awards season, with both “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” named in 15 categories, including best film and director. But joining the two with 15 slots, making it a three-way tie going into the final nominations, is “Killers of the Flower Moon.” Last year, only “All Quiet on the Western Front” earned 15 longlist places, with the film going on to dominate the awards ceremony (and winning best film).
Further down, “Poor Things” was named in 14 categories, “Maestro” in 12 and “Saltburn” in 11, with “Saltburn” missing out on a best film slot. Other U.K. films fared well, with “The Zone of Interest” and “All of Us Strangers” named in 10 categories (including best film), “Wonka” in eight,...

13-year-old Willis Gibson made headlines recently by effectively beating the Nes version of Tetris. While highly skilled Tetris players have long been widely respected in the speedrunning and competitive gaming communities, Gibson’s recent accomplishment is seen as an especially significant gaming milestone. Not only is he the first person to beat that version of Tetris, but it was previously believed that it would be physically impossible for a human being to ever beat that game.
While it’s easy enough to use words like “impossible” and “first” to explain why this event is so impressive, those words fall short of really capturing the scope of Gibson’s accomplishment. To help understand that, you first have to know a little more about what made beating this version of Tetris seemingly impossible in the first place and how, exactly, Gibson made the seemingly impossible happen.

Over 30 years on from its release, the Nes version of Tetris has finally been beaten by a 13 year-old player.
Tetris? Completed it, mate. That’s the bragging right well and truly earned by 13-year old gamer Willis ‘BlueScuti’ Gibson, who’s become the first player to ‘beat’ the Nes version of the puzzler – some 34 years after it was first released.
If, like us, you didn’t know it was possible to even beat Tetris, rest assured that it was widely assumed that no human player could keep up with the game’s sheer speed once it reached its later levels. By this point, the blocks come hurtling down the screen at such a frenzied pace that it becomes borderline impossible to position them accurately – all of which leads to a Game Over within a few short seconds.
