Bad "50 First Dates" replica
piverba1 September 2008
This is a poor refashion-remake of the "50 First Dates" (2004) (Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore). With the difference that male – female character roles are reversed: it is not the woman who suffers periodic memory losses but the man. I suppose present film have some extra ideas – in addition to the idea of tolerance and compassion toward personal disabilities as in the original, here there is an idea of remaining a child with immediacy of perception and the ability to see the essential qualities of things, rather than external attributes, such as appearance, position, money, power – that which elevates Love above everything else. It also introduced some justification for why would anyone wish to deal with a disabled person, to love them and care for them. The answer was in receiving special gifts that only possible in such a relationship and could not be so between 'healthy' and unproblematic people. Such relationship may endure when people have great needs – she has a need to be a child, he has a need for care and continuity. Both of them get what they need from this relationship. However, I felt, in many moments, plot's artificiality. The actors' performance were average.

Now to the unpleasant, negative part. The question I'd asked the director Alyona Zvantsova, what compelled her to engage in such unoriginal project? Not only it is a bad copy, but also the theme song used in the film is "Crazy Love" – an English language song. Are there any Russian songs, except Visotsky's, deserving to be used in Russian film? Why such aping of Hollywood schema? Isn't there a specific Russian subject matters that need to be addressed and that could be of an interest to other nations? You know, watching this film, I could not tell whether it was stages in Moscow or somewhere in US. Please follow the best traditions of Russian cinema - do not ape Hollywood.
