no fish porn

It's striper time or time to fish the striped bass. Coot Hall fishes off the coast of Cuttyhunk Island, MA. from his boat. Harry A. Watkins surf fishes for striper along the beaches of Montauk Point, Long Island without the use of a boat. I used to watch fishing shows on weekend mornings. There is something hypnotic and appealing about those shows. This one is missing the fishing porn, the slow excitement of truly reeling in a fish and a lively fish flapping around. Instead, it's a lot of quick cuts, edits, and ends with a dead fish hooked on the end of the line. It's not the same.

A Fish Story

Here's another of the late short subjects from RKO Sportscopes. It's about striped bass fishing off Montauk Point on Long Island, narrated by series regular Andre Baruch.

Fisherman Coot Hall is featured, with plenty of shots of him surf fish: flannel shirt, cap, pants, of course, and high rubber boots, standing in the flowing tides and cast his line out into the water, his lure attracting stripers up to 45 pounds. They're looking for a meal, but he intends to make them his dinner.

There are few better eating fish than striped bass. A neighbor of mine always brings back some for folks to enjoy. He goes out on a boat, but they taste just as good.

Striper Time (1956)

** (out of 4)

RKO/Sportscope entry has Andre Baruch once again providing the narration. This time we're in Gayhead, MA as we see a couple fishermen getting ready to go after striped bass who are also known as striper. We see the two fishermen getting ready, preparing to go out and eventually catching the film. Pretty much every negative thing I've said about previous entries in this series still hold true here. We get the bland and boring narration and we also get told a bunch of stuff and none of it is very interesting. For starters, do we really need to hear about the "big wimpy pole"? I personally don't think so but it seems this series tells more worthless information and I'm not sure why. The actual fishing scenes are quite nice as is some other footage at the start of the film shot on the docks but this is pretty much it.
