- At Park Vale school, the detention period is beginning under the eye of one of the teachers, Mr. Cunningham. Cunningham speaks to one of the students, a boy called Jacob, and asks why the normally well-behaved lad has been getting into trouble lately. Jacob insists that he's fine, but keeps looking at a strange blue mark on his hand. One of the other students, Steve, repeatedly insults him, and Jacob loses his temper, which Rani hears as she passes by. Jacob orders Steve to stop talking, and then calls for everyone to be silent, and they all lose their voices. He tells them to stay where they are as he runs off, and they are stuck to the spot. Rani sees this and pursues Jacob, who goes to the bathrooms and tries to wash off the symbol on his hand. This does nothing, and blue veins begin to spread across his face. He takes out a pendant he was wearing with the same symbol, and begs it to stop. The students and teachers are freed from it's control, and they all flee in a panic. Rani is about to barge into the to check on Jacob when he emerges, face and hand back to normal, and tells her everything is fine. He leaves as she finds the now discarded pendant on the ground. Jacob watches from as distance as Rani pockets the necklace.
Sarah Jane is dropping Luke off at Clyde's house for the weekend, as she is leaving town on "journalist business". Clyde's mum, Carla, greets them at the door, and she and Sarah Jane chat for a moment before Sarah heads out. Carla immediately puts Clyde to work preparing supper, saying he's a "demon in the kitchen", which surprises Luke. Carla is amused at Clyde's bluster, but it is clear the two are very close. Meanwhile, Rani and her father, Haresh, are debating over what to order for their own dinner. Rani causally suggests chinese, and Haresh agrees without question. Confused, as her dad dislikes chinese, she sees the pendant she picked up glowing, and starts to realize that he is doing anything she tells him to. Rani starts to test this out, making her dad behave embarrassingly, but soon realizes how dangerous this power could be if she accidentally tells him to do the wrong thing. She tells him to forget the incident, which he does. Just then, Jacob comes to call, and sees the mark from the pendant already formed on her hand. It starts to fade, as Jacob says it does when it's not in use. She makes him explain, and he tells her that he found it in a construction site at school. He used it for fun, to make people like him, but it started to speak to him, and take him over. He is convinced whatever it is is evil, and Rani tells him she knows someone that can help get rid of it for good. She goes to the attic, where Sarah Jane has left written instructions to leave any alien material for when she gets back. Rani tries to start up Mr. Smith to investigate for herself, but the alien supercomputer is on standby mode while Sarah is gone. Rani leaves the pendant behind, and goes home, the alien object pulsating as she leaves.
At the Langer house, Clyde and Luke head to bed for the night, joking with Clyde's mum as they do. Luke notices the large number of hand drawn sketches and portraits in Clyde's room. Clyde initially denies they are his, embarrassed, but soon admits he has a natural talent and passion for art. Luke thinks it's amazing, seeing pictures Clyde has made of him and their friends, and wishes he knew how to draw. Clyde offers to teach him, and Luke makes a joke about fatherhood, which he suddenly realizes may have been in poor taste, as Clyde's dad is out of the picture. Clyde insists he is long since over it, and he and his mum are all eachother need anyway. Carla finally makes them settle down for the night.
The next morning, someone arrives at the door, waking the boys up. Clyde answers it and is stunned to find his father, Paul, in the doorway. He asks to come inside to talk. At the Chandras', Rani is relieved to see that the mark from the pendant has disappeared completely, and tells her dad that she going to hang out with the boys. Haresh tells her to be careful around Clyde, saying he's a troublemaker. Paul makes himself at home in Carla's house, and introduces himself to Luke. Carla and Clyde are furious at Paul's sudden appearance, Clyde reminding him it has been five years since he walked out on them without so much as a word or visit. Paul makes excuses, saying he has been living in Germany and couldn't come as much as he would have liked. Clyde tells his dad how much his departure hurt him and his mum, telling him that at first, he blamed her for driving him away, then he started to become a delinquent at school, and was eventually expelled. Paul offers a paltry apology, and says he is there to reconnect with his son. He asks to take Clyde out for the morning to catch up, but Carla doesn't want him to be alone with her son. However, she tells Clyde the decision is up to him, and he reluctantly decides to take the opportunity to speak to his dad face to face. He asks Luke if he'll be alright while he's out, and Luke tells him to go. In Sarah Jane's attic, the pendant is glowing furiously. Rani asks her dad, carefully, if he thinks she should wait for Sarah Jane to return to help her with a 'project', or if she should attempt to do the job on her own. Haresh encourages her to follow her instincts, and she decides to find out about the pendant without her journalist friend. She calls Luke, who is admiring Clyde's artwork and photographs, and tells him to meet her at school. He finds Carla as he prepares to leave, and he notices she is distraught by the morning's events. He tries to comfort her by saying that Clyde will be okay, and she asks Luke if his dad is also out of his life. Luke dodges the question as being too complicated to answer, but Carla just reminds him not to forget his mum if his dad ever showed back up.
Paul takes Clyde to a park, and Paul tries to reminisce with him, but demonstrates how out of touch he is by mistaking Clyde's age, and realizing he doesn't know anything his son is interested in. Clyde sits him down, and asks him why he walked out on them. Paul dismisses it as him and Carla simply not getting along, telling Clyde he shouldn't blame himself. Clyde doesn't fall for it, reminding Paul it was he who ran off with his wife's sister. Mr. Langer admits that he didn't handle the situation correctly, which Clyde points out as an understatement. He accuses Paul of leaving him, but Paul says he didn't forget about his son, showing him a picture of Clyde he keeps with him. Clyde and Paul talk about Paul's life in Germany, and Paul asks Clyde what he gets up to. When he absentmindedly implies that Clyde only hangs out with a 'geek' like Luke to make himself look better, Clyde snaps at him, and defends his best friend. Paul backs off, and asks Clyde again what he does. Clyde considers, saying there is something he can't talk about. Paul nudges him to be honest, ignoring a call from his partner, Carla's sister Mel. Suddenly hopeful to connect with his dad, Clyde decides to tell him the truth.
Rani and Luke scour the construction site at school for clues as to the pendant's origin. Luke is worried about Clyde, but Rani echos that their friend can take care of himself. They find nothing else in the site, and Luke suggests that Mr. Smith may work for him where he didn't work for Rani. They head back to Bannerman road. Clyde admits to his father that he and his friends save the world on a regular basis, and tells him about aliens. Paul remembers the Dalek invasion from a while back, but is skeptical of his son's stories. Clyde resolves to prove it to him, and takes him to the attic. Clyde shows him the alien artifacts, and tells him about the wonders they've seen. Paul starts to believe Clyde, but seems only interested in finding ways they could make a profit from the alien tech. Clyde tries to get Paul to appreciate the mementos from the stars on their own merits, and gets distracted as Paul finds himself drawn to the pendant Rani left. He pockets it without his son noticing, and they leave happily. Mr. Chandra sees the two leaving Sarah Jane's house, and is suspicious of Clyde and the stranger being at Sarah Jane's when she is away. Clyde claims that he is watering her plants, though Haresh points out that Rani made an identical claim. Paul tells Haresh to drop it, and the headmaster drops the pizza he was holding. Paul jokes that Chandra should exercise more, and Heresh starts to do push-ups in the middle of the driveway, to his and Clyde's amusement. Rani and Luke arrive and see this, and realize that Clyde broke Sarah Jane's rules and told his dad what they do. Rani accuses Paul of stealing the pendant, but Clyde defends him. Paul, understanding the pendant's power, puts the necklace on, and orders Clyde to leave with him. As he does, Paul tells his son to forget his two friends. When Rani and Luke try to stop him, Clyde doesn't recognize them.
